We live in a fast-paced world. Many of us have read about the importance of families sitting down together. Just ….. sitting ……down ….. together. Tonight at our dinner table was a typical night.
My son and daughter-in-law are vacationing in Italy, and my wife and I have been taking care of our grandson. After my wife announced that there is a worldwide shortage of helium (please don’t ask how this came up), followed by a discussion about the dangers of using hydrogen in balloons, our 13 yr old grandson said that hydrogen was a metal.
Foom!!!! Papa threw the bullshit flag on his grandson. “Hydrogen is NOT a metal,” declared Papa. “Is too,” declared grandson. After dinner, there was furious googling by Papa and grandson. Decision, Papa. Hydrogen is not a metal.
But that’s not the point. Sitting down together as a family is the point. Exchanging ideas and information. Sharing and solving problems, personal or otherwise. Or just enjoying the comfort and company of family. That’s the point.
What do you think? Is this a valuable custom? Are family dinners, or regularly scheduled family get togethers, important? Do you have a story to share?
