Latest Snowden Poll Results: 55% Say Whistleblower; 34% Say Traitor

Immediately in the aftermath of the Snowden revelations, various political action committees and their ideologically affiliated polling services took to convincing the general public that according to “popular opinion”, a “majority” of Americans found Snowden to be a [traitor|hero]. A month later, with the the dust having settled somewhat, the US public has had some more time to consider the implications of living in the United Stasi States of America. And sure enough, another poll has just been released, this time by Quinnipiac. Its findings are as follows: a majority of U.S. registered voters consider Edward Snowden a whistle-blower, not a traitor, and a plurality says government anti-terrorism efforts have gone too far in restricting civil liberties, a poll released today shows. Fifty-five percent said Snowden was a whistle-blower in leaking details about top-secret U.S. programs that collect telephone and Internet data, in the survey from Hamden, Connecticut-based Quinnipiac University. Thirty-four percent said he’s a traitor.
The view of Snowden as a whistle-blower rather than traitor predominated among almost every group of respondents broken down by party, gender, income, education and age. Black voters were the lone exception, with 43 percent calling Snowden a traitor compared with 42 percent saying he was a whistle-blower.

The poll also showed that by 45 percent to 40 percent, respondents said the government goes too far in restricting civil liberties as part of the war on terrorism. That was a reversal from January 2010, when in a similar survey 63 percent said anti-terrorism activities didn’t go far enough to protect the U.S. from attacks, compared with 25 percent who disagreed.
“The massive swing in public opinion about civil liberties and governmental anti-terrorism efforts, and the public view that Edward Snowden is more whistle-blower than traitor, are the public reaction and apparent shock at the extent to which the government has gone in trying to prevent future terrorist incidents,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac’s polling institute.
“The verdict that Snowden is not a traitor goes against almost the unified view of the nation’s political establishment,” Brown said.
Facing espionage and other charges and with his passport revoked, Snowden has been holed up at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport since arriving there on June 23 from Hong Kong, which refused a U.S. extradition request. President Barack Obama’s administration has been pressuring other countries not to grant Snowden asylum, and U.S. officials who have called him a traitor include House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican.
The poll showed both Democrats and Republicans about evenly divided on whether government counter-terrorism measures have become excessive. Independent voters view the methods as having gone too far by 49 percent to 36 percent.
“The fact that there is little difference now along party lines about the overall anti-terrorism effort and civil liberties and about Snowden is in itself unusual in a country sharply divided along political lines about almost everything,” Brown said.
A gender gap emerges, though, on the government’s anti-terrorism programs. The poll showed that men, by 54 percent to 34 percent, see the government as having gone too far in its efforts while women, by 47 percent to 36 percent, said the measures haven’t gone far enough.
Despite this divergence, figures for the genders from Quinnipiac’s January 2010 poll exemplify the overall change in attitude on the issue. Male respondents, by 61 percent to 28 percent, said in the earlier survey that the government hadn’t gone far enough to protect the country. Among women, 64 percent said the same.
Likewise, among Republicans the percentage who said government has gone overboard in restricting civil liberties in the fight against terrorism grew to 41 percent in the new poll, compared with 17 percent three years ago.
Of course, this poll will promptly be overturned by another poll conducted by MSNBC (or comparable), finding that 120% of Americans believe Snowden deserves the chair. And the farce will go on.
Well, this is a big surprise. Women by their nature tend to seek security. They are alarmed by anybody taking a strong stand on anything, raising their voices or scoffing at the powers that be. Actually taking direct action against a malefactor inspires noting but horror in most of them. There is a reason why the now seldom used term “old woman” came about. Trembling, dithering, frightened and indecisive says it all. It is only fair to point out that the exceptional women who do not fit this mold – and there are plenty of them, thank God – usually demonstrate more guts and fortitude than most men. Therefore, there is a recognition, at least at a subconscious level, that they need physical protection provided by men.
Because of economic and cultural changes, men have been demasculated. Many women now view men as unnecessary, even for procreation.

As a woman I’m not certain whether or not I should be offended! lol I will take the positive and look at the comments (including the governments) as a joke. I guess I am one of the few women in this world who like giving her man his balls. I LIKE having my big strong protector/provider. I in turn do all the things a woman should do for her man. Not just cooking and cleaning, I make certain he maintains good health, has everything he needs to protect and provide, and make certain his balls stay intact! I DO NOT believe in emasculating men, I believe there is a reason for old fashioned ways. The problem is most men forget how to treat their women (wives, daughters, mothers, all) like women. That we should have a say and our opinions too. And to be able to do our jobs by being provided for and protected, etc. Most men forget this and begin to think of and treat women as property.
While women are more inclined to seek security over liberty, the number of emasculated males has surged as well. Far too many people of both sexes have become wards of the state. Their fear of having to make it on their own trumps their desire to be free.

Part of the issues for women is that their feminist movement has driven them to the government, and away from the nuclear family unit.

Since when does a “majority” of women believe that the federal government hasn’t done enough to make the country secure?
The majority of the women I know, which include dozens of stone-liberal Dems, believe that the government has became way too intrusive, believe that Snowden, if not necessarily a “hero”, at least did nothing wrong, and are afraid that we have given the government and law enforcement too much power.
The majority of women do not believe in military conscription. The majority do not believe that we have any reason to involve ourselves in foreign wars of aggression.
Drop this meme that women as a whole are more “security” oriented to the point of giving up personal freedoms. We like our personal freedoms very much and will grant you yours if you grant us ours.
Oh, and YEAH, the majority of women greatly resent the Welfare State. Capitalism Impedes Breeding; Socialism to Boost Baby Quotas
The latest studies suggest that American workers and peasants are holding off on their production of new labor force members until the full implementation of Socialism in America. The uncertainties of the present quasi-capitalistic market are considered inappropriate for the development of Young Socialists.
In order to improve the USSA’s breeding program, it is imperative that the People’s Congress immediately pass the Immigration Reform Bill so that more fertile populations can help America replace its decreasing labor pool necessary to sustain the State’s wealth redistribution plans. Mexico is particularly favored for this project, after replacing America as the most obese developed nation, so that obese immigrants can help the USSA regain its foremost standing.
Both infertility and weight loss are signs that the Proletariat of America are unhappy with Capitalism and the reactionary delusions of the Republicans. The constant oppression of the Bourgeoisie through their wealth hoarding and inflationary pricing must be stopped, or the State will be forced to import workers from even further abroad, like India or Malaysia.
Socialism has always been concerned with the equality of sexual partners, which increases activity and leads to increased pregnancy in some cases. Here is the problem – there are very few decently bred women out there anymore. 75 % of the black children have unwed mothers. 55% of Hispanic children have unwed mothers. 30% of white children have unwed mothers. And all of these percentages are growing. 40 to 45% of all children are born to unwed mothers.
These are not generally “decent women”. And their offspring are almost certainly headed for the Free Shit Army.

Not only do I support making all drugs legal (they should be a medical issue, not a law issue), I also support making prostitution legal. While I don’t support prostitution, why are there laws against what you can do with your own body?
I think the government needs to get hell out of other countries and stop the endless wars. I have no problems with “illegal aliens” but don’t think they should be voting or getting welfare. Fine if they want to come here, but they better learn English and be willing to work.

I’m politically homeless. Both major parties are absolute disasters, and I can’t vote for an alternative without thinking I’m tossing the vote to whatever I most hate…. though I vote Libertarian anyway, when the choice is offered me.

How can any individual be expected to speak for a heterogenous group of people? There are many reasons why the “majority” of any group of people votes for an issue or person, or expresses a particular opinion. Why does this automatically taint that particular group? Especially when this particular poll is literally 2,014 registered voters contacted by telephone between the dates of June 28-July 8th. Always, always look at the sample used for a poll or any kind of research before attaching too much significance to the results. And no, I am not ignorant of the fact that more women than men are concerned with safety. I am also not ignorant of the fact that the majority of the architects of tyranny in this country are men.
It seems to me that the Fourth Turning is doing what it has always done: exacerbating divisions between groups of people, highlighting the differences between Us and Other and encouraging people to look for groups of people to saddle with blame for the current state of trouble. The crises that lie ahead for the nation will require us to put aside our differences and focus on the ideas and values that will return this nation to the constitutional republic it once was. In the course of most of human history, men have not “had rights”, either, except that which the king, or tribal leader, or petty tyrant cared to grant. The expression of our individual rights, that are our birthright in this country are unique in human history, and not given by any man or woman or government. Our government was founded to protect those rights, not squash them. It will be ideas, values and sacrifice that will return us to that.

Maybe some restrictions on voting might be applied. Here’s a suggestion.
A basic test on the constitution that would be just hard enough to require it being studied and moderately comprehended.
Not that everyone qualified to vote would be on the same page but at least it would insure a certain level of compliance and understanding of what this nation is supposed to be like it or not.

People will not pull together. Many people have no values and under no circumstance will they acquire any. Many people have values that are distorted or fanciful and they will not emerge from their delusion even when hit with hammers. Many people have values that conflict and can only be resolved with bloodshed. Many people are morons who can only manage to have one or two values that someone else told them to have. We will not be restored to some previous better state. There never were any good old days. Things just keep getting worse so it makes the crappy old days look better. Eventually things are going to blow up and blow apart and we will get to see what true unrestricted unregulated freedom will be like. It will be found in total anarchy and chaos. My bet is most of us won’t like it all that much. But it might be better to die free than in a FEMA camp.

I was not suggesting that there was a “perfect” or ideal time in our country’s history. Every era brings its own challenges and triumphs. I do agree with you about the general lack of intelligence, morals and values in huge swaths of our population, but this is not static. Things are devolving and will continue to devolve until the nation reaches full-blown crisis mode and no one will be able to hide behind their Stupid phones or their iEverythings and hope for the best. The majority of the population will come to realize that the very survival of the nation is at stake, and it is at that point that people will come together. This has happened in every previous generational cycle.
We are in a Fourth Turning. Divisiveness and negativity are everywhere and will get much worse before this whole thing plays out. What’s on the other side? I have no idea. Depending on choices made at critical junctures, there are many different endings to this current generational cycle. Instead of focussing on the negative and getting ready to throw in the towel because everything looks so hopeless, it is time for people of quality, people with high morals and values, to rethink their current outlook and understand that we have no choice but to go through a sort of conflagration before we can arrive at a (hopefully) better place.
I am no Pollyanna. I know that some very bad times for this country are just around the corner, and that things could get very ugly indeed. I am preparing as best I can and assume that most readers of TBP are as well. Have you read The Fourth Turning? It’s a great book but I recommend the authors’ first book, Generations: The History of America’s Future. It is my favorite nonfiction book and the main reason why I am a glass half-full rather than half-empty person when thinking about the future of our country.

Yet the many self-proclaimed, uber-religious prove, time and again, that they interpret that to mean NOTHING. I don’t get it. Don’t they live in the same world I do?
I live in this world the entity supposedly created (I’m done arguing on either side of that point, it doesn’t matter, we are here NOW, today. what does it really matter, I digress) and I can see, document, validate throughout history, that this world is not black and white. There are infinite shades of mystery and miraculous, or gray, as I see it.
If said God created such a world, created animals, created animals outside humans that use mind-alterning, god-provided substances, than why in the HELL would he tell us not to partake? And why, oh my aching ass why, would he encourage and support breaking one of the biggest commandments (killing, and the drug & terrorism war are nothing but killing machines and freedom shredders) to stop his people from using the very things he has provided?
What kind of sadist bastard is this all-powerful entity? Always made me wonder why anyone that expected moral behavior would intentionally set you up to fail over plants and fermentation.
