According to the government and their corporate MSM mouthpieces we’ve been experiencing an economic recovery since late 2009. This is a country whose GDP is driven by 71% consumer spending. That means buying shit they don’t need with money they don’t have at mega-retail outlets. The shit they are buying has to be transported by truck. They need to drive to the mega-retailer in order to buy the shit. The number of miles driven are at the same level they were in 2004. GDP is SUPPOSEDLY up 35% since 2004. Of course, the BEA reports that REAL GDP has risen only 14% since 2004, with the other 21% due to our non-existent inflation. The truth is that Real GDP is lower than it was in 2004 if you use an honest measure of inflation.
Miles driven have fallen for the last 5 and a half years. That is because GDP is falling. There has been no economic recovery. Real wages continue to fall and commerce is declining. It also has nothing to do with people switching to more efficient vehicles. More than 70% of all vehicle sales are SUVs, pickups, or minivans that get low mileage. The decline is driven by less truck traffic on the roads because of our contracting economy. It’s that simple.
