I was about to write a new 30 Blocks of Squalor Christmas article and wanted to go back and see what I had to say last year. After reading this post, I realized it couldn’t be topped. There is really nothing more to say. It’s a 30 Blocks Christmas Classic. I’ll just add a couple of anecdotes and let you enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the 30 Blocks of Squalor at Christmas.

I wanted to provide an update about the beggar who is stationed at the Girard Avenue off ramp from the Schuylkill Expressway. Earlier this week I noticed that he brought a chair to sit in while he begs. This beggar is a bit lazy. The good beggars will walk up and down the line of traffic at the red light and give you the sad eyes and downtrodden look, to guilt you into giving him money. This dude just sits there with his cardboard sign and expects you to summon him to your car. Secondly, the dude was wearing a new red LL Bean ski jacket with a beautiful brown scarf wrapped around his neck. He was wearing some pretty expensive work boots too. Next to his chair was a bag of trash with 6 empty coffee cups, $2 Deer Park water bottles and sandwich wrappers from 7-11.

I, of course, was wearing my five year old Dockers winter coat purchased at Kohl’s with a 30% coupon when it was on sale. In the seat next to me was my brown bag lunch that included a generic Wal-Mart 10 cent bottle of water. I made a pot of coffee at home and drank two cups for about 10 cents. I have a psychological issue with giving money to someone who is dressing and eating better than me. I’m not a scrooge. I give money to organizations that I know help people down on their luck like Manna on Mainstreet in Lansdale and the Ronald McDonald House in Philly. If a beggar can afford to spend $10 per day on food and drinks, he doesn’t need my money.

The second humorous anecdote is about some liberal shrew that evidently didn’t like this article when it was published last year. Somehow she concluded that I’m a racist. Liberal shrews must not have much to do other than tell other people how they should think and act. This particular shrew decided she was going to get me. She tracked down my work phone number and the phone number of my boss. She left a 5 minute screed on my voice mail about my outrageous racism due to my describing exactly what I see in West Philly. The message left on my boss’ voice mail included her reading parts of my classic Christmas tale that she found offensive. He sent it to me and walked in my office. I told him that liberals don’t like what I have to say and you can’t please everyone. He laughed and walked out. I hope the bitch reads it again and works herself into a frenzy of hate and retribution.

Now onto this touching heartfelt Christmas postcard for West Philly.

I knew it would happen eventually. There was a big accident on the Schuykill the other night and I had the pleasure of another trek on the 30 Blocks of Squalor under the Market Street El and through the lovely 69th Street shopping mecca in Upper Darby. No matter how hard I try not to think while I travel through this bustling ghetto of  Obama voters, I can’t help but be amazed at the unbelievable sights and reach conclusions that would make Rachel Madow and Chris Matthews foam at the mouth in anger.

It now gets dark at 4:30 every night, so my daily trek through West Philly has taken on a new complexion. Did you know it’s hard to to see black people in the dark? I’m extra vigilant when driving at night through West Philly. My biggest fear is a Bonfire of the Vanities moment where I run over a black person and have to decide whether to flee or stop and be confronted with irate Obama phone toting voters. The chances of hitting a black person are higher than you might think because they really don’t give a crap about stop lights or walking on sidewalks. There is one crazy ass black lady who walks down the middle of 37th street on a regular basis with no concern whatsoever for being run down. Her crack addled brain is incapable of worries about safety. You’ve all seen the type.

Another general observation regarding West Philly in the dark is how dark it is. I’ve been wondering about this for some time. The row homes along 37th street are dilapidated, decaying, rat infested hovels. The vacant ones have boards over the windows. The average price of these dumps is about $25,000. In the summertime there are 300 pound welfare mommas sitting outside as their bastard children play in traffic. There are automobiles parked in the street in front of these Obamaville slums. But as I drive by every night I notice there are no lights on in 90% of these low income estates. My first thought is they must still be at work. Then I come to my senses and realize no one works in this community.

The unemployment rate on this block is easily 80%. But that doesn’t seem to be impacting the corner bar that always has plenty of patrons. I can’t help but come to the conclusion that these people are living in these hovels without electricity and/or heat. My guess is their electricity was cut-off due to non-payment. It’s almost like this neighborhood is in 3rd world country, except that everyone has a cell phone and there are Cadillac Escalades, Lincoln Navigators and BMWs parked on the filth covered streets. This is one of the neighborhoods that voted 100% for Obama. After 47 years of welfare programs pushed by progressive do-gooders and urban enclaves completely run by the Democratic Party, the black people who inhabit this squalor have no jobs, no education, no self respect, no inhabitable shelter, and no incentive to change or improve their condition in life. Only in the bizarro world of the United States would these people vote unanimously to retain their right to live in squalor.

When you drive into my neighborhood at this time of year, it’s like a winter wonderland of lights and decorations. When you drive down 37th Street in West Philly there isn’t a Christmas decoration or twinkling light to be seen. Not one. They have bars on the windows, but not Christmas lights. You’d think someone in this squalor would have the Christmas spirit. But, I guess they figure Obama Claus delivers their EBT presents on the 1st of every month, so no need to celebrate just in December. The only Ho Ho Ho you’re likely to see in West Philly is this one.

Shortly after turning onto Market Street I noticed something new, in addition to the hundreds of newly installed wheel chair ramps on every street corner. We all know the millions of taxpayer dollars spent putting wheel chair ramps on every corner in West Philly has created thousands of union construction jobs and jump started the West Philly economy. Don’t worry about the water mains that burst every other day and cost taxpayers millions when they flood homes and businesses. At least the rascal and hoveround ghettomobiles can manuever easily from block to block. These dudes are really happy.

You will be thrilled to know that the brilliant government leaders of Philadelphia have dramatically improved Market Street by painting a bike lane in each direction. This is considered a major improvement in a corrupt, bankrupt city that has been in non-stop decline for the last 50 years. It was such an accomplishment that our African American Mayor Nutter brought his big scissors to the grand opening of a freaking bike lane. Meanwhile four more people were gunned down in cold blood in other parts of Philly while Nutter was celebrating some paint on a street. If we can just have a productive last four weeks, we can have the Christmas gift of a five year homicide high of 330.

I couldn’t help but find the whole concept amusing. The dimwits who run the City of Philadelphia evidently haven’t spent much time in West Philly on Market Street. Over 90% of the people are obese and only exercise when leaving the scene of a robbery or murder. Black people in West Philly don’t need to ride bikes because they don’t need to go anywhere. Their welfare payments, food stamps, and SSDI payments are all delivered electronically. They certainly don’t need a bike to get to their jobs.

I wonder if anyone else finds it amusing that the painted symbol of a biker through a neighborhood that is 98% black is as white as a ghost. This painted white stick figure is the only white person who will ever occupy this bike lane. I wonder why the city decided to have the bike lane abruptly end at 56th street? Maybe they did a study that told them that no one on a bike in this neighborhood would make it past 56th Street alive.

As I continued down Market St. the commercial success of Obama’s economic policies are evident for all to see. His 2008 campaign visit was the only and last time he will ever set foot under the Market Street El. The yellow tape is actually designating a crime scene. Notice the mural of black people doing great things in the background. There are at least six murals like this one on this route.

Live Blogging the Pa. Returns

The murals are far outnumbered by the number of vacant, crumbling buildings that once housed businesses and have been abandoned to the rats and vagrants. I’m sure four more years of Obama economic policies will surely revive the entreprenuerial spirit that lurks just below the surface in West Philly.

If you honestly observe the reality of Market Street today, you realize that fifty years of failed welfare policies have caused this travesty. The only operating businesses on this corridor are nail salons, hair salons, check cashing joints, bars, and porno video stores. The best selling products in West Philly are roll down steel gates, plywood, illegal hand guns, and crack. The worst selling products are books, condoms and wedding rings. It seems commerce in recently owned appliances, furniture, and electronics on the sidewalks of Market Street is thriving. The former owners of these products probably aren’t thrilled.

The parades of the 1950s down a Market Street of thriving businesses watched by hard working middle class married white familes are a distant memory. The population of Philadelphia reached its peak in 1950 at 2.1 million people. Today, there are only 1.5 million people living in Philadelphia. That is almost a 30% decline in 62 years. Meanwhile the U.S. population grew from 152 million in 1950 to 315 million today, a 107% increase. The State of PA.’s population grew from 10.5 million in 1950 to 12.7 million today, a 21% increase. In 1950 80% of the Philadelphia population was white and 18% was black. Today, 30% of the Philadelphia population is white white (non- Hispanic). Over 44% of the population is black and 12% hispanic, with many parts of the city (aka the 30 Blocks of Squalor) at 95% black. The white flight from the city to the suburbs was not due to racism. It was due to the government policies instituted by liberal do-gooders who thought they could create a welfare paradise.

The city inflicts a 4% wage tax on all residents and a 3.5% wage tax on non-residents like myself. The state wage tax rate is only 3%. The city has had a Business Privelage Tax and a Net Profits Tax for decades that crush businesses. For the privelage of doing business in Phila, they tax your gross receipts. They don’t care if you are making money or not. They take their slice off the top. What business in their right mind would choose to open in Philadelphia? The city is completely captured by unions. The government drones are all union, the construction industry is union. This puts a 30% premium on every expense in the city. The real estate taxes on businesses and homeowners are off the charts to support one of the worst government run school systems in the nation. As more people flee this urban nightmare, they raise the taxes on the remaining producers. Philadelphia is an example of what the nation will become after a few more years of Obama policies.

We don’t need hard working married families anymore. We have the government, welfare, Obama and shovel ready wheel chair ramp installation jobs. Market Street and West Philly are a tribute to government solutions. Maybe another PR campaign and a coat of paint on streets strewn with garbage and debris will revive Squalorville. If not, just raise taxes on the producers so the parasites can retain their free shit.

As I got closer to 69th Street the route actually deteriorated. The people who occupy this stretch of squalor are ignorant and angry. They have no self respect or respect for others. The average educational level of these people is at about a 5th grade level. During this Christmas season I’m reminded of the Island of Misfit Toys, where all the defective toys live. The 30 Blocks of Squalor is the Island of the Ignorant & Uneducated Gang Bangers, where all the dregs of our society live. Maybe Obama Claus will arrive soon and deliver them more of our tax dollars.

As I approached 69th Street I experienced another example of ignorance and disregard for others. A van driven by an ignorant resident of the Squalor just stopped in the middle of the street to chat with one of his homeys on the sidewalk. He didn’t care that there were four cars behind him who couldn’t get by. There were parking spots available for him to pull into, but it was easier to just sit in the middle of the street and converse about the latest goings on in the hood. After about 3 minutes he decided to pull over. I didn’t dare honk my squeeky Honda horn. It would be like the scene from Animal House when they walk into the black bar and everyone stops and looks at them. And then the black guy pulls out his switchblade.

As I entered the 69th Street area of Upper Darby, more observations about the deterioration of our daily existence came to light. The 69th Street Terminal is a transportation hub where various trolley lines, train lines and the Market Street El meet. There are four stop lights that must be timed properly in order for the traffic to flow properly through this congested area. This is a basic function of government. As I entered 69th Street it was complete and utter gridlock. The stop lights were completely out of sync. Intersections were blocked. One light was red when the light 20 yards away was green. Nothing but honking horns and pissed off drivers. As I sat in the gridlock, I looked up at the famous 69th Street sign that has been there for decades. At night it is supposed to be lit up. It is a basic government function to keep it lit properly. Today at least 70% of the lights in the sign are out.

Just another example of government incompetence and attitude of indifference about the basic things that need to be done. The zombies shuffling around this decaying urban enclave amidst the garbage thrown on the streets really put me in the Christmas spirit.

The lesson to be learned from the 30 Blocks of Squalor is that you get more of whatever you incentivize. If you tax the productive members of your city into oblivion they will flee the city, leaving only the non-productive eaters. If you penalize businesses and business owners with excessive taxation and union level prices they will leave or close up shop. If you take from the productive and give that money to the uneducated and unemployable, they will not educate themselves or seek employment. In It’s A Wonderful Life the terrible future was Potterville, where the capitalist pig Potter owned everything and kept the workers trapped in his slums. In West Philly 50 years of Democratic welfare policies have created Squalorville, where government do-gooders have created a wasteland of filth and dependency.

Now that I’ve gotten this out of my system, I’m ready to hang the Christmas lights and decorate the tree this weekend. Merry Christmas from the hood.

As goes the 30 Blocks, just like DETROIT, so goes the USSA.

  20. sangell says:

What goes on in our urban ghettoes is arguably far worse today than what took place before the Civil Rights era and Federal anti poverty programs began. There is a moral bankruptcy about these ‘neighborhoods’ that goes far beyond low incomes. While some may find it hard to believe, prior to the Federal governments efforts to ‘help’ black folk, they had a functioning society and even an economy. In 1960 black illegitimacy rates were about where white rates are today. Murder rates were higher than the white rate but not multiples of it.

We all have seen what Walmart and other chain stores did to small town America’s main streets and suburban malls did to all but our biggest cities downtown shopping districts. Well, the end of defacto and de jure segregation did the same to black social and economic structures. Blacks had stores and shops in their communities and they weren’t owned by Koreans or Palestinians. Middle class blacks had trouble buying homes in white neighborhoods so they had to live in the black community and they enforced middle class values in their schools and neighborhoods in the same way the white middle class people did. Since welfare wasn’t so easy to get black women worked and, I admit, often as domestics in white homes, but this too exposed them to middle class values, etiquette and language. How many middle class whites today can say they have any contact with poor blacks unless they are buying drugs or being robbed?

I’m not saying blacks should have been condemned to segregation but tearing it down as fast it was torn down and with nothing to replace it was, in many ways, like decolonization in Africa. You removed a functioning government that worked and replaced it with a thugocracy. In the US we removed all discipline and structure from the poorest black neighborhoods and allowed a Lord of the Flies type society to develop. Worse, no one could say anything about the degeneration of black society less they be accused of ‘racism’.

The “thirty blocks of squalor” sounds incredible, sickening and yet fascinating – sort of like looking at a massive car wreck. I appreciate the tirades about the FSA but I have to believe there may be a bit more going on. It doesn’t excuse things – much less repair the damage – but I do enjoy seeing as many components of the problem as possible.

“These pre-existing attitudes formed the basis of a “redneck” or “cracker” culture, a culture consisting of “an aversion to work, proneness to violence, neglect of education, sexual promiscuity, improvidence, drunkenness, lack of entrepreneurship,… and a style of religious oratory marked by strident rhetoric, unbridled emotions, and flamboyant imagery.”

“Sowell points out that although most Southern blacks and whites moved away from the redneck culture over the generations given its destructively counterproductive effects, it survives today among poorest and least educated ghetto blacks and, since the 1960s, has been revered by today’s white liberal elite.’

admin, is 30 miles away, far enough? Man, I’d prefer a hundred miles or more! Don’t think I’d feel safe with less than that.

No other stories on TBP bring such a full range of emotion when I read them like your 30 blocks of squalor tales. I read them slowly and contemplate the past, present and future. When other nations allow their citizens to live like this, we and others accuse them of crimes against humanity. I wonder if any remaining WWII veterans read this site because I’d like to hear what they think when they see this shit?

How FUCKING ironic is it that the 30 blocks of squalor is the direct result of a GRAND FUCKING JOKE known as THE WAR ON POVERTY! Results like this need to be prosecuted criminally! I’d like to hear any intelligent liberal explain this shit. Who the hell voluntarily runs for office in places where they have jurisdiction over progressive accomplishments like this?

The poor, ignorant residents of places like the 30 blocks have been reduced to what I consider, sub-human status. Take away a peoples dignity and this is what results. They (mostly liberal progressives) took shit away from these people is such a way that they looked forward to it and even helped out. Replace their dignity with a few shiny baubles (Navigators/Obama Phones/Magic Money Cards) and they will even vote for the FILTH that represents them.

I’ve been educating myself about much more than I ever planned to since 2007. Over time, you begin to build a macro view of things. I cannot help but think that most of this shit was planned. Not every detail of course, but failed education policies, abandonment of moral upbringings, the end of married/two parent families, etc in the name of Freedom, has brought about many unintended consequences. Evidence says that these unintended consequences were at some point deemed acceptable by those in power.

I sincerely hope that Hell really exists because there are great many people who deserve it! There is less to be proud of every day!

    7th December 2012 at 5:06 pm

  26. Eddie says:

No, I don’t think it was ever planned. It’s just a hard lesson in the effectiveness of positive feedback loops and the law of unintended consequences.

Now, that is not to say that some savvy politicians, like LBJ (and Obummmer) , didn’t see the personal benefit to be gained from giving away shit to voters.

The worst part is that there doesn’t seem to be any way to go back…to reverse this. It almost certainly has to crash first. And I’m afraid we aren’t as close to that as one might think. And I’m afraid that things can and will get worse in the short run…and that the whole sick system might persist for some years.

Yes, I understand that the math doesn’t work, and something has to give. But when changes are made, wrong choices will still win over right choices, the repression of productive people will continue, and bureaucracy will persist long after it should be pronounced dead.Just like these Greeks on the public payroll now when working people there are starving…the political class will be favored until the wealth of this country is bled to nothing.

It is very simple – govt needs to leave people the fuck alone. Do not give them stuff, do not take their stuff. Provide police to keep others from taking their stuff, and enough defense to protect from invasion. Provide opportunity for education. And that is about it – otherwise leave the people the fuck alone.

But no, they know better, and have set off on a never ending expansion of rules, regs, and entitlements.

And now they have finally expanded beyond what private sector workers can support. The few simply cannot support the many. Collapse is inevitable.

“and it (the ailments of black society today) sure as hell is not whitey’s fault.”

Well, one could argue that it sure as hell is. Start tracking the issue from the day’s of the War on Poverty, ie. the mid-1960s. Who was in charge back then, from big city governments all the way to the federal government? White men. From Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley, who ran that city with an iron fist, to LBJ himself. Minority representation, from blacks and Hispanics and even women of any color, in nearly all levels of government, was minimal to non-existent. It was white men who designed those poverty programs, wrote the laws, passed those laws, and then approved the budgets to fund them. Other than that, I agree with the thrust of your comments.

    @ An African-American

@Eddie: I don’t know where you live in East Texas, but the black folks around us are pretty cool, their neighborhoods do NOT look like the 30 Blocks, in fact, if you drove through them, you’d never know it was a “black” part of town. ‘Course I’m out in the country and country folks are great folks regardless of color, but I would say that was true when I lived inside the 610 Loop.

I have had TWO flat tires on Telephone Road on the way to Hobby Airport when I lived in town, both after dark. This runs right through the “black” part of town. Both times a very nice black man changed by tire without robbing and raping me, gasp gasp, sarc off.

Yeah we’ve got a few of the FSA, lead by that ignint witch Shiela Jackson Lee, but in my experience, they are few and far between (excluding the detritus that washed up after Katrina and destroyed the Greenspoint area).

Mebbe it is the fact that being a professional victim and troublemaker in Texas is NOT met with the open arms and pocketbooks of the bleeding heart libtard proglodytes but the blazing guns of the rednecks.

@An African-American: Doppleganger or not, please provide us with pictures and stats showing us all the white ghettos, thank you.

Where I’m from I’m fifth generation. There are black people there today who are the descendants of slaves of my fore-bearers…who even share my name, which isn’t a common one. In my neck of the woods almost everyone was once equally poor and equally rural. My father had many, many black acquaintances, and there was a great deal of mutual respect. I was raised to be color blind.

Thomas Di Lorenzo’s book, the one Flash turned me on to, pointed out that before the Civil War there was probably more racism in the North than the South. I think that’s still true.

    10th December 2012 at 11:54 am

  89. steve from virginia says:

Getting the handle on slums is hard to do:

Slums are a product of modernity just the same as automobiles and jet airplanes. They are economically segregated areas, places where society’s losers are swept. Modernity washes its hands of the slum-dwellers then moves onto other business … the creation of more slum dwellers. Slums are the end product of social Darwinism, the necessary ‘yin’ to business success ‘yang’.

More success = more slums. Failure of the process also = more slums. Modernity asserts that it eliminates poverty. Slums stand as evidence that modernity creates poverty. More modernity = more poverty.

As with Mumbai and Nairobi, so goes Detroit and other slum-cities, the product of- as well as destination for industrial prosperity.

Detroit Philadelphia originally grew and took form from the incoming tide of European immigrants who built in the manner and with the materials they were familiar. The craftsmen who built the fairy castles solid housing were replaced with unskilled agricultural workers looking to toil in the expanding automobile factories, shipyards, these workers had no background or interest in city-building. They needed a paycheck, the city would take care of itself.

Slums are the product of the economy, not an item that has escaped the economy’s attention. Nobody wants to be in a slum, they are there because they have no choice.

Creating the same kinds of tinker’s fair economies or street bazaars in Philadelphia as are found in 3d world slums is difficult because the sorts of activities that make up tinkers’ fairs — ad hoc auto repair/body shops, tinsmiths/pot-n-kettle mending, household merchandise trade, prepared foods, recycling, pedi-cabs/jitneys — are regulated out of existence and unprofitable in US cities. For instance, anyone wanting to make snack foods to sell to passersby must have a commercial kitchen and multiple licenses, something out of reach of a person who makes a few dollars a day. Tinkers’ goods are imported from China and India, we leave our unemployed unemployable or as drug dealers where a percentage is skimmed off and sent to prison. Dependency on relief does not help, neither does poor education: slums become self-perpetuating.

Slums are fixtures in the US not just in a few inner cities, there are dying small towns everywhere in the country, older suburbs ringing every city, ‘edge cities’ such as Phoenix and Las Vegas, exurbian centers Stockton, California and Orlando, Florida … faded resorts and storm-damaged seacoast cities such as New Orleans … a city more damaged than any in this country … There are slums in developed places around the world. In China, it is the new places that are the slums …

Greece. France. Portugal. UK. Russia … There are broken countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Argentina, Russia, Haiti, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, North Korea … There are simply too many people. The race between industrial growth and expanding populations has been lost. So-called ‘growth’ will never catch up and the world will become steadily diminished.

The challenge is to marshal what resources are available and put them to good use, to reduce the human population to a level that can be sustained by perpetual resources … to eliminate unnecessary machines which create the poverty in the first place. Note the complaints by the author about the difficulty of driving … it is the cars and driving that cause the poverty in the first place.

Read the article, read the comments…

Man, I miss out on all the fun.. trolling, sock puppets, self-righteous rants… too much fun.

Never been to Killadelphia. Never plan on it. Won’t go within 500 miles of it.

All you ‘libruls made the ghetto’ people are soooo way off base. Encouraged it? Probably. But if the Orcs, Trolls and Uruk Hai who inhabit the 30 blocks were TRULY “the same as us”, they would use that good mental horsepower to figure a way out of there. Or a way to make their lot in life better. Improve what you have. Don’t fuck it up and destroy it.

    Take Detroit…. HERE’S a fucking idea!

Detroit is about half abandoned. The buildings are mostly masonry – brick and mortar. Most can be had for pennies, if not for free. Most of these residences and businesses that were abandoned are made of things that people will pay through the nose to get…

Old clay fired antique bricks? Especially the ones with names stamped in them? BIG money. Get a dumptruck and some masonry tools, obtain one of those abandoned buildings and take it apart. Employ the locals to disassemble the buildings, clean the bricks and stack them into cubes (which is how bricks are sold). Stuff like antique hinges, light fixtures, doorknobs, window weights, window closures, even screws and bolts, can be salvaged.

Someone doing that would make good money, be self-employed, employ others, improve the neighborhoods by demolishing old buildings/eyesores, and recycling old hardware… the reason I know this is because I want to build a patio for the house here… and have it made from old clay fired brick. Little did I know there is a HUGE market for old clay fired bricks, and you will pay a premium for them. Some earlier houses have hand cut limestone blocks for a foundation… do you know how much that shit costs today??

Even the wood that the old houses were made of can be reused and repurposed… around here, some enterprising folks go around and buy old barns. The wood these old barns are made of cannot be found on the open market today – huge hewn beams of Chestnut, walnut, ash, cedar and yellow pine (a tree almost as hard as oak, and almost extinct..)… they disassemble the barns carefully, pay the owner for a “new” barn, then sell the salvaged wood at insane prices. They make major bank, too…

The same treatment can be applied to old buildings in shitholes like Detroit, Camden and the 30 blocks…. it can’t go on forever, since the number of buildings is limited, but at least you’re making a fucking EFFORT and employing people and doing the community a service…

But what the fuck do I know? I’m just some racist asshole from Kentucky…

I read the thread and saw that post, first thought “Classic Stucky” and then got to watch it erupt.

Man, for as long as you’ve been doppleing you think they would recognize it.

Fun read, if a bit depressing. Much like most of the “30 blocks” series.

Great post. Unbelievable some liberal twat took it upon herself to try and destroy your life. She obviously thought you’d be fired. Glad to know there are sane people that still allow and individual to have opinions of their own.

Man admin, that’s like saying “I was going to get you guys a present but then I decided not to.”

I love the 30 Blocks stories.

BTW, only seven more days till we get our puppy! I feel like a little kid!

Great bit of TBP history. Where the hell is Colma, and Punk, for that matter?

I doppelled Eddie into a lather. I am so ashamed. But he never should have said he would leave if the doppling continued. It was like telling a kid not to push that button – it just had to be pushed, i could not resist. .

And I note that my post has garnered the most accolades on this bit of TBP history. They love me. They really love me. Brings a tear to my eye.

Billy – like I have been saying, you have to be patient, because when you least expect it, a gem like this is uncovered.

Glad to see that the douches then remain the douches now. Nonanonymass – that means you.

    Thanks Admin.

When I drove my son to his apartment in Detroit a couple times, it made me wax nostalgic for your 30 Blocks.

Thanks, as awesome this year as it was last year.

A Christmas classic, nearly right up there with, “you’ll shoot your eye out kid”

yeah, what AWD said. it never ceases to surprise me how liberals, particularly white female liberals, if they had their way, would happily re-open the gulags for the thought crimes of (mainly) white non-liberal men. it is sickening. any heterodox thinking, which is to say non-liberal, is to be snuffed out–its author’s life destroyed. (i am reminded of david mamet’s play “oleanna” all of a sudden). i can only hope that the “shrew”, no doubt a womyn with a mustache, sees her little perfect dollhouse world of liberal totalitarianism wind up on the receiving end of a giant wrecking ball. methinks it’s coming.

by the way, my friend who had to beg for his life is now a surgeon at yale. the university makes him hold regular clinics for poor people. he is happy to do so mostly. but he complains that in exchange for his excellent and free service he gets a shitoad of attitude and bitching from the HO HO HO crowd. fucking unbelievable.

Appreciate all the work u do on this site. I don’t see that u are trying to tear people down but trying to build people up. Why have we evolved into a society where you cannot tell someone when they are doing wrong?

  112. Milw05 says:

Ancient Rome had it’s Subura neighborhood, where nobody, ever, ventured out at night. Dead body would be collected from the streets each morning. 19th century London was overrun with petty criminals and prostitutes. New York, had it’s five corners, with it’s drunken criminal Irish. An area run by gangs and violence. Chicago in the late 19th century, was the wild west, where murders would happen nightly. Rarely where these crimes even investigated,

These dirty crime ridden cities all had something in common with modern day Philly. Poor, civil disfunction, violence etc. Except Philly the problems center around Blacks, but we forget it wasn’t all that long ago, that poor whites exhibited the same behavior. Then the Irish where the worthless bums, or the Italians, or whoever.

The white English or establish class of the 19th century wrote and spoke the same towards the Irish as your 30 blocks of squalor does for the blacks.

  113. Mike Moskos says:

I go through a neighborhood like this nearly every day in Miami, albeit by bus. (I used to be worried about it, especially changing buses late at night, but people are well behaved. I worry more about the police who seem a little too execution happy). This are is the site of the first federal public housing complex in the nation, as progressives moved the poor out of congested areas near downtown and into a much larger, suburban-style concentration camp for those of the same income that requires both yard maintenance and a car unless one lives near the few blocks that have bus lines. (Apparently they just imagined the poor could afford both cars and lawns, the costs of which explain a big source of the poor’s problems).

After observing it for years, here’s what I think they need to do to fix it:
–Get out of the larger municipality and create their own city. They need control of the local laws and the tax revenue. The suburban-style laws that keep expensive areas of the larger city pristine have no place here. A city of poor people needs laws that make it easy to start businesses. Example: what’s wrong with flea markets at city parks every day?–its how they get a start. Cash businesses are preferred since they need the security of their government benefits in case the business takes time to pay them a decent salary.
–Creation of local credit unions/banks, esp. along the Grameen Bank model. There’s more money here than you imagine and it needs to be invested solely in the community. A few activists at pro basketball and games would provide the necessary player embarrassment if they don’t immediately move some of their money into the banks to help their race.

While the segregation laws showed government at its worst, integration did the real damage: as soon as people could shop elsewhere, they did. Those that stayed behind all had the same low income–insufficient to keep the local businesses alive. Also the exposure to people of different incomes was gone: there was no one around to hire you for odd jobs, baby sitting, etc. The same damage has been done to vibrant self sufficient communities across the country by easy-to-traverse roads: as soon as one could shop at the brand new Walmart 10 miles away for 1 cent less, why shop at the old family run grocery store with its 40 year old shelves and mildewed ceiling?

Mike moskos – some of your comments make sense.

But the crap about letting folks draw a welfare check while running a business and hiding the income via cash transactions basically says you are an unethical shit for brains overall.

  115. David says:

Its really sad to see how West Philly and Upper Darby have declined. My grandparents lived there in West Philly until the early 1970s when the influx of the new, criminal element drove them to Upper Darby. I loved Upper Darby growing up. I could walk down to the 7-11 or Barclay Square at nite and never worry. Now I wouldn’t set foot there in broad daylight. I never understood how some people would live in a crumbling, decaying home BUT have a brand new, luxury car parked out front. I’d rather have a nice, well kept house and drive an older car that is paid for. Some folks in this country have some very screwed up priorities these days.

  116. Ignorance Repellent says:

Its a shame, the arguments would have greater merit without all the racial language. The racist commenters obviously turn a blind eye to white cultural backwardness/laziness/criminality. You talk about 30 block of squalor, but the worst poverty and out and out trashy behavior I ever saw in Philadelphia was in Kensington when it was all white 15-20 yrs ago. It looked worse than any third world country, made the worst of West Philly look like its ne’er do well cousin Upper Darby in comparison. Grammar was horrible, people lacked the most basic manners, trash was everywhere, the beggars were white and just as ignorant as the so called “coons”. What about this country’s trailer park residents..they don’t live off handouts? They aren’t obese? The blacks were not allowed to live where they wanted or hold certain jobs for years, through racial terrorism..what are white people’s excuse for being lazy, ignorant, and entitled when there was an automatic advantage? I gotta say that a lot of you sound angry that you don’t have the built in advantage of blacks being denied their rights anymore, they can move where they want and go where they want like any other Americans and the racist in you is pissed. When are people going to realize that the white is right and i hate coon era ended at least 50 years ago for most rational folks? You can’t watch them in movies, cheer them on sports teams, be cool with a couple of them at work, but say things like you cant see black people in the dark, I thought you had to be 18 to post on blogs. Sounds like junior high to me……
