YOU ARE ONLY A SPEC

According to Lisa Grossman

The Hubble Space Telescope just revealed the deepest view of the universe ever seen – and it relied on a traffic jam of galaxies to do it.

The new image (right) is the first in a series of “Frontier Field” images, which take advantage of an effect called gravitational lensing to peer further into the universe than ever before. Gravitational lensing happens when huge collections of matter – such as those found in galaxy clusters – warp the space-time around them so that the light from objects behind the clusters takes a curved path. These galaxy clusters can act as cosmic magnifying glasses, bringing objects into focus that would otherwise be too faint and distant to see.

IS, if we could see to the other side of the balloon, to use your metaphor, then we could calculate the point of the origin of it all. I find this topic interesting, but my limited mind is more interested in things that I can use, in a practical real sense, so it is not a passion for me. If I believed that I could invent a practical warp drive, then I would be all over this shit.

A very small portion of the Veil Nebula. A friend has what was up until recently, the largest amateur telescope in the world. Seeing this portion of the Veil on a good night in his scope is mesmerizing. The Veil is a supernova remnant and from our place on Earth occupies a large part of the sky as far as astronomical objects go. You have to re-aim the scope a dozen of more times to see it all.

Relative to what? We are “inside” the Universe. What, if anything, exists outside of the Universe is pure speculation. I tend to believe that if one tiny nothing “poofed” into existence creating our Universe at some “place” then why could it not happen elsewhere?

I love pondering the possibilities. The more I learn, the more interested I get.

You wont find the other quote because it got deleted, I looked for it the same day and it was gone. I assumed it was a Doppler who made those 2 very similar comments in the spirit of fucking with bb. Too bad you were taken in. bb can be an asshole but this type of comment is not like him, he normally attacks people but he doesn’t attack his own character. Of course you still have every right to hate his ass because he has been very offensive towards you and SAH and I-S and admin and cetera.

I fucking hate child molesters as much as anyone and those comments by bb, if they were in fact made by him tell me all I need to know about the shitstain. I’m not making any effort to defend him here but with the rampant doppelganging that takes place here, I’d hesitate to push that label on anyone here.

Hell, I think Juan and bb are on in the same. Lately though, Juan has disappeared and El Coyote seemed to join the site about that same time. El Coyote, like I said, if I’m inappropriately attributing you or Juan as being bb then I apologize but in my opinion you deserve it for playing the dumbass doppel game. I believe I am right.

I base my idea that you three are one in the same on several things. You often have the same word press assigned avatars. That could be coincidence or not. Similar content in postings. All three tend to post at similar times in multiple threads. Each seems to defend the other. Even for negative comments bb tends to get a couple of thumbs up which could point to the other two thumbing his comments up. Just seems fishy to me. I tend to trust my gut and the preponderance of evidence leads to my conclusion.

I have no fucking use for bb but if someone doppeled him and posted the comments cited by T4C then that is reprehensible and beyond low and I sincerely hope someone eventually returns the favor. Even without those comments being attributed to bb, he is still an ass clown of the lowest order.

Now you are implying I thumbed up the supposedly ‘his’ pedophile comments, I object to that but fuck it, I know I didn’t, child molestation is not my kind of humor to approve of.

Anyway, I laid out a rational analysis of why I don’t think it was bb: point 1, doesn’t sound like him, point 2, it is an easily copied avatar and if you read the thread again, he was involved in a minor argument, he was being an ass as usual. peace, I-S

SSS, you have some of the darkest skies in the CONUS and observing opportunities abound down there. You can spend time on a number of professional telescopes and attend countless dark sky star parties. An army of amateur astronomers place tens of thousands of dollars worth of high end equipment in remote areas of AZ and operate it remotely and even autonomously year round from all over the US. You can even rent time on many of them to take your own images right from your own computer. No experience needed.

I’d give my right nut to live in your neck of the woods. If I didn’t love my job so much I’d be down there in a flash. Probably in the mountains hear Flagstaff.

Humility settles over you like a warm blanket when you spend time looking at distant objects through a good telescope. As with most things in life, it takes a bit of time to learn how to use a telescope. You even have to learn how to “see” again in many ways. Many people get very disappointed when the dim, fuzzy objects they see in a telescope do not match the bight, high definition, color images they see online or in print. If you stick with it though, you’ll be rewarded with numerous magnificent observations. These usually happen at the most unexpected times and quite often run contrary to what you planned or expected to be observing at the time.

I’ve ended up listening to and even watching huge flocks of migrating birds in the dead of night. I’ve seen forest fires spring to life on distant mountains. One of the best things that can happen to a visual astronomer is a night of perfect clarity and dead still atmospheric seeing conditions. Seeing conditions vary wildly and it is damn rare to get a perfect hour, let alone a perfect night of seeing. On nights like this it’s impossible to observe objects fast enough or slow enough. One night I was scheduled to share the night sky with members of a local Mormon church. I arrived to find a heavy layer of fog over the observing site and I could barely see the stars. I spent a couple of hours trying to show people the few deep sky objects I could tease into view along with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The deep sky objects looked terrible but holy shit!…….the planets were the best I had ever seen. I spent the next six hours out there in a fog covered field making what are still the most detailed and stable observations of those planets I’ve ever had.

Some guy I didn’t know let me look through his telescope … I actually saw Saturn’s rings ….. that was 30+ years ago and I still remember the thrill.

Questions I don’t know the answers too …. and too lazy to look up.

1. Are all the stars we see with the naked eye in our Milky Way?

2. If light takes thousands and millions of years to get here …. how do we know those stars still exist? What if most of the universe is burned out and all we see are the remnants??

El Coyote
El Coyote
January 12, 2014 3:05 pm

I would say yes to #1, and regarding #2, the night sky is the best proof we have of a distant past.

IndenturedServant
IndenturedServant
January 12, 2014 5:26 pm

Yes Stucky, every star you see with your naked eye is inside our galaxy. Keep in mind that we can only see a tiny portion of the 400 billion stars in our galaxy. I would guess that given perfect eyesight and perfect observing conditions, we might be able to see 100,000 stars from the each hemisphere. Telescopes reveal a very tiny number of intergalactic stars that must have been ejected from galaxies. They tend to have high proper motion which indicates that whatever exiled them from their parent galaxy must have been powerful as hell.

Our Milky Way galaxy is only about 100,000 light years across so anytime we are talking about those sorts of numbers, we are talking Milky Way galaxy. Numbers bigger than that and we are going extra galactic. There are many reasons we see so few stars with our eyes including the star brightness and distance. More importantly though, there are huge amounts of intervening gas and dust between us and the rest of the galaxy. The picture below illustrates this:

Beyond 100,000 light years we enter the vast, empty realms of inter galactic space which as far as we can tell is utterly empty…….no stars, planets, comets, asteroids, nebula or anything. These things are almost exclusively limited to galaxies. When you hear about numbers in excess of 100, 000 light years we are generally talking about other galaxies. Large, professional scopes are needed to observe individual stars in other galaxies unless a nova or supernova occurs. In those cases individual stars in galaxies can outshine the totality of every other star in that galaxy.

The truth is that many of the stars out there are in fact burnt out but the photons they emitted continue to travel until absorbed or blocked by something. However, we know from red/blue shift studies that most galaxies contain very hot areas of very dense gas and dust where new stars are forming. Blue areas in galaxy images are star forming regions. One of the newest stars discoved in our own neighborhood was actually discovered by an amateur astronomer as it emerged from it’s cocoon of gas and dust. The Eagle nebula is a massive star forming region relatively close to us. We can’t really see the new stars yet but their light is causing the gas clouds to glow.
