So Slim-Fast Is Better?

The US News and World Report recently released their report on the best and worst diets.  Apparently eating animal protein and fresh vegetables, fruit and whole foods in general is your least healthy option while gimmicky diets that focus on processed foods in which sugar is the main ingredient are superior.  Couple this with type of propaganda with the median level of stupidity of the populace and the availability of processed food; no one should be surprised that this nation is filled with tons of people (literally) that are nothing but fat sacks of crap.

WTF3

I found a link to the post below on MDA, there is no realm that the Lame Stream Media won’t get wrong and their propaganda won’t infect.

Wow, I cannot believe Paleo was dead last, though most people have had great success. Most Paleo dieters not only lose a great amount of weight, but it is the only diet known that keeps the weight off.

On a side note, while being a waitress for many years I noticed clear trends of eating throughout demographics. The most surprising, elderly people (Age range 70+) eat differently than the rest of the country. I have rarely seen an obese elderly person, and they are the demographic that has extended life expectancy, which is now reversing. These people never gorge themselves on food. Most elderly people eat the same thing in a restaurant, 90% of the time they will order a dish of meat and vegetables, and order water to drink. This is regardless of the restaurant.

Yeah, I like Paleo too. We need TPB’s resident Good Eats expert TeresaE to chime in.

I try to eat good, mostly dodging gluten – but eating healthy, even just mostly healthy, is like admin bobbing and weaving around philly’s potholes.

Visit a nursing home and see how many obese inmates you see.

Roy,

Age demographic you are referring? Just because someone is in a nursing home now, does not mean they are elderly. Yes, I have been in nursing homes, the assisted living care AKA nursing homes is a much broader demographic than 20 years ago. There are plenty of obese people living in these facilities because they cannot manage their diabetes, have lost a limb, or had a stroke.

When I am referring to elderly I am talking about the 70+ range. I have seen some over weight people in this range, but not the morbidly obese.

Also, I ended up watching the color “I Love Lucy” special over Christmas. I remember as a kid thinking Fred Mertz was so fat. Though I suspect William Frawley was overweight due to his alcoholism. But boy did American push the boundaries in how fat a person could be.

I have Celiac disease, so gluten is verboten and has been for the last 15 years. No wheat pasta, pizza, pies, cookies, donuts, bagels, croissants, breads or most cereals. The last time I checked, this crap is what forms the base of the government’s stupid food pyramid.

I’m on the primal diet, similar to the paleo. Meat, fish, fowl, veggies, some fruits, nuts and berries. I throw in occasional rice and potato for variety.

I walk every day, run wind sprints once a week, and do a resistance workout twice a week. Hardly a gym rat. I have time to do this in addition to my job, because I don’t watch TV. Haven’t done so for a very long time. It’s amazing how much you can do when you throw the boob tube away…

The result? I can wear the same clothes I wore 20 years ago. At 50, I am slimmer and stronger than 95% of the guys half my age. My cholesterol is below average and my blood pressure is 112/60. Resting pulse is between 52-55 bpm.

All of this on a diet they rank dead last. Something seems amiss.

Disagree somewhat, dirtythong. If I ate all the barbequed ribs I’d like to eat, I could run 10 miles a day and still gain weight (or retain too much). Because I would like to eat a lot of ribs.

Dirty is not completely wrong. I tend to eat whatever I want, and surely drink too much beer and maintain a very reasonable weight. I still fit into the same 34X34 jeans that I wore before my I got married 23 year ago. I try to eat mostly meat, fruit and vegetables, a little bread. I have an affinity for home made pizza, I make my own dough, and almost daily ice cream. The real stuff, not that low fat crap. I do walk or run 3 to 5 times a week 3 to 3.5 miles and do basic calisthenics on those same days. Push ups, pull ups, sit ups mostly. This morning my wife said I looked skinny, ha ha.

Currently reading a book written by an ultra marathoner “Eat and Run” by Scott Jurek. Some pretty amazing stuff. He is a vegan and has some very interesting ideas on plant based nutrition. I would have a really hard time giving up hamburgers and home made pulled pork though.

Bob.

Gotta have some carbs though cause if I dont the pants start falling off.

Blood pressure was good last doctor visit. Nurse asked If I was a runner. “No,” I says “Why do you ask?”

Canola is by its nature ALWAYS GMO: http://www.naturalnews.com/029516_canola_oil_fraud.html Why? Because the plant it was derived from, rapeseed, produces erucic acid which is toxic and creates lesions on the heart muscle. That is why it was genetically modified in the first place.

Gotta agree with BostonBob.
Eat nutritious, un-processed (repetitive?) food and get light exercise. I walk, stretch and do the occasional sprint, and I do push ups, pull ups, lunges and squats when I feel like the surf is gonna be down for awhile…
I am thinner and stronger than when I played basketball everyday thru high school and college. I don’t even really like to run anymore, but still play ball every couple weeks.
I generally feel free to eat cakes, cookies, candies, and drink way to much beer (preferable every time to a soda.) My girlfriend is a DPT and is still convinced that fat causes cholesterol. I eat bacon and eggs most mornings. She thinks I’m due for heart disease despite my otherwise great health.
Side note: I spend most of 2013 out of commission while recovering from a knee surgery. I watched my portions on the crap food and kept my usual paleo-heavy diet. I ended up putting on 2-3 pounds. I was pretty damn lazy by my standards tho…

Love how people that depend on advertising revenue for their salaries try to come off as independent.

Diets, of any kind, never work long term.

Denying yourself is a surefire way to set yourself up to fail.

The best way to lose weight is to change your lifestyle.

Eat as close to earth and hoof as you can. Eat as little processed (and primarily made in China or Mexico with little to no USDA influence) and man made foods as possible.

Paleo is closest to the way our bodies evolved to eat. It is not natural for a human to be a vegan, we need animal protein for multiple systems in our bodies to function properly. Low fat (like Slim-Fast diet) can lead to diminished brain functioning.

I’ve lost, and continue to lose, the most weight by staying away from ANY processed foods – the minute I add them back in my waist thickens, seemingly immediately – and eating REAL fats – full fat milk, butter, I’m adding lard back into my cooking, coconut oil, olive oil and peanut oil.

If I feel chunky (bloated usually), I make a huge steak for dinner with a side of sauted veges (usually garlic and onion peas, my fav!) and the next morning I’ll wake up bloat-free and down a couple pounds.

Basically eat the way your great-grandparents ate, then move like they did.

The best exercise routine is the one that doesn’t make you hurt so bad you don’t go back for a month.

One set of muscle fatiguing exercises is enough to build strength while not building pain, aches and injuries.

Move your ass, drink more water, eat real food sensibly, that is the “secret” to maintaining your weight.

And, realize, that our portion sizes are out of control. No human needs the amount of foods we consume as a daily habit. We are literally killing ourselves with fake foods in huge quantities.

Oh yeah, finally, supplement with a high-quality magnesium, iodine helps too. Our bodies cannot function correctly without these nutrients which have become virtually invisible in our modern food supply. According to Dr. Nan Fuchs, and others, you should be consuming a 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. Nearly no American gets that as the RDA is 4:1 (calcium to mag) which sets our bodies up for illness and complications.

There ya’ go Card, my two cents
