Google published data detailing the diversity of its workforce, becoming one of the first large tech firms to do so. The data confirm a widely held belief: The company is predominantly male and white.
The numbers are stark: 70% of Google employees are men, and 61% are white. The company, in a blog post published Wednesday, concedes it still has a ways to go to meet its diversity goals: “Put simply, Google is not where we want to be when it comes to diversity, and it’s hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts.”
The issue of diversity in the tech industry has gained prominence during the past year, as social activists, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, has called out Silicon Valley for its lack of racial and gender diversity and has begun pressing companies to release data about their workforce compositions.
Last week, Jackson appeared at Facebook’s annual shareholder meeting in Redwood City, Calif., to press the company to release data about its workforce, lamenting the scarcity of women and minorities in tech, especially at the executive level.
There are reasons, Google says, for its diversity deficit: Women earn roughly 18% of all computer-science degrees in the U.S., and blacks and Hispanics earn fewer than 5% of those degrees.
The guys that own and run Google are liberals so they get a free on diversity in their workforce.
Google’s in-kind contribution to blacks Americans is to make any queries about Obama’s fake birth certificates come back with “Fight the Smears” and “Snopes”. They changed their slogan from “Do No Evil” to “Do Only Evil”.

LOL…I hope this overt exposure forces Google in an affirmative action hiring program and soon Google will be up and running like a well oiled VA hospital administration..I mean just look what affirmative action hiring has done for the Federal government bureaucracy …see Obamacare for e.g….say goodbye G-mail….

I’ve never met a minority VA hospital admin. All this stuff is economic 1st.
Break down the white workers in Google & they’ll be predominately from blue state schools, if public, where they have more money to spend on tech.
I doubt u will find many Google employees from a poor state like Mississippi. When u do find minorities in a tech job like with Google, they will have to be exceptional as they are fighting a stigma, just like a techie from the wrong school or area. All the media tries to paint complex situations as literally black & white = dumb it down to divide people from the true issues.

I have and from what my eyes tell me, the majority of the staff are of the “non-white” category….but, regardless , Detroit has done so well, I’m sure Google will do just swell instituting race equality via black hiring quotas.
Also, what I meant is white males will suffer a form of discrimination at Google too, just based on locale or school, etc.

If segments want more hires, the way to get it is with economic freedom & less government meddling. Fed policies disproportionately harm those on the bottom, ensuring they stay there. Now, they have SNAP & EBT to passify the poor.

Typically, these kinds of stats are collected from surveys where people self-identify their ethnicity.
I wonder how many of those “White” people come from, say, India? it would be interesting to see a survey based on surnames as opposed to self-reporting. I guess that makes me some kind of racist for even thinking like that, huh?
I’m surprised they report no category for gay and transgender? I’m guessing a lot of males who work for Google are pretty metrosexual, what with all those man bags and shit they carry around.

My sense is that the older computer types were there mostly as employees of big companies and big government. The younger ones gravitated to it because mom–seeing pedophiles behind every bush–wouldn’t let them go out and play so the computer became their best play toy and they rapidly put in those 10,000 hours that made them “experts”.

Hey Eddie – Indians origin applicants list themselves as “Asian”. For some crazy reason, the US govt considers all “asians” as one ethnicity. When I lived in the states a few years back, it would always amuse me since I’m of Indian\English descent, look tan-caucasian but would be demographically “Asian”. Not that i mind since I consider myself culturally more “asian” than “western”.
As a sidenote – The white numbers aren’t really high since more than 60% of the US is white.
