Toddler critically injured by flashbang during SWAT raid

A toddler was critically injured by a flashbang during an early morning SWAT raid in Georgia Wednesday.

SWAT breached an Atlanta residence around 3 a.m. in search for Wanis Thometheva, 30, who was wanted for selling drugs. They deployed a flashbang, but the device landed in 19-month-old Bounkham Phonesavanh’s playpen, WSB-TV reports.

The baby was severely injured by the blast and was transported to an area hospital, where he was placed in a medically induced coma.

“It landed in his playpen and exploded on his pillow right in his face,” said the boy’s mother, Alecia Phonesavanh. “It blew open his face and his chest. Everybody was asleep. It’s not like anyone was trying to fight.”

According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the raid took place after a confidential informant reported he had purchased methamphetamine from Thometheva.

Law enforcement officials were familiar with Thometheva, who had prior drug and firearm related arrests. He wasn’t home at the time of the raid but was captured later on at another residence.

Cornelia Police Chief Rick Darby said the operation was a multijurisdictional effort. He added there was no indication children were present in the home.

“There was no clothes, no toys, nothing to indicate that there was children present in the home. If there had been then we’d have done something different,” Darby said.

Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell said injuring an innocent child was the last thing he wanted to happen.

“The last thing you want is law enforcement to injure someone innocent,” Terrell said. “There was no malicious act performed. It was a terrible accident that was never supposed to happen.”

Doctors say baby Phonesavanh has about a 50 percent chance of surviving his wounds, but say they won’t know for certain for at least several weeks.

“Our hearts are broken with them because of the child,” Terrell added.

From what I see the cops have become lazy and brutal. What happened to just staking out the apartment and pinching the perp when he leaves. No that would take too much time and you wouldn’t be able to use all of your fun new military toys. The worst part is that this is the new normal for the police and other domestic armed forces. Swat raids have gone from a few hundred a year in the 1970′s to about 80,000 a year. If that’s not a recipe for disaster I don’t know what is. Someone should publish all the cops in this raids faces and the people of that city should be at their personal homes protesting the violence they have perpetrated, but that will not happen. Sad, just sad.
Bob.

The cops claim the parents knew drugs were being sold out of the house, the cops claim they bought drugs out of the house two hours before the attack, the cops claim the attack at 3:00am was justified to stop domestic terrorist from selling drugs, they claim this is the drug sellers fault and they would do the same thing again.

The people will believe anything the cops claim because they are more concerned about kim and that black guys wedding and some fat fuck kardashian who didn’t show.

The president is concerned about high school athletes concussions, the mooshell is concerned about her healthy lunch initiative has been de-funded by evil republicans.

The silence is always loudest after a flash grenade blows up a baby apparently.

An informant tells a copfuk that some guy sold him amphetamine so they send in a swat team at 3:AM…for a non-violent petty crime? This is the story here, not police brutality or criminality, but as bostonbob said, the absurd overuse of swat teams.

Scotty, beam me to Mayberry.

Bob, I think the issue is the fed gov has placed a bounty on drug dealers thanks to the war on drugs. So local copfucks want to arrest as many suspected drug dealers they can to collect the bounty, these people can be innocent, it doesn’t matter, cops still get the bounty, the local copfucks also get to keep anything they want to sell later to bolster their budgets, again it doesn’t matter if they are innocent or not. The law is in favor of the cops.
Then if we look at all the military gear these cops have thanks to the wars, these cops now have a “use it or lose it” mentality.

SWAT teams with new No Knock Rules are now used in place of the stakeout, and they are trained to take out the terrorist in body bags, not handcuffs.

Yeah, cops are not your friend.

A picture of the Godless drug dealer, the kid’s dad. Looks to be Thai, Filipino, or the like. He’ll be a multimillionaire before long, I’m sure the lawyers are lining up around the block for this one.

Another victim of the war on drugs. Your tax dollars at work. What a fucking joke, Americans consume more illegal drugs by far than any other country on the planet. Living in this country is so miserable people have to take drugs just to cope.

Why the fuck would they need a flash-bang to take down a drug dealer? Why don’t they just drag the people out their house (like in Boston) and execute them with one to the back of the head? Yea, drugs are so dangerous, unlike SWAT teams, the DHS, Obama, Holder, Pelosi, Reid, the government, our military, the NSA, CIA, IRS. The people doing the most to destroy this country are given a pass every single day.

And millions of Mexican drug dealers and criminals are let out of jail, and sneaking across the border every day, but that’s okay, because they’ll vote democrat and get on welfare/food stamps. But we can’t have people doing drugs, self-medicating so they don’t blow their brains out because of all the hypocrisy and bullshit. Pathetic.

Nothing but business as usual, damage control, cloud the waters of public opinion as much as possible. Agree with Zara, what are we doing conducting operations like this for such trivial matters.

“The war on terror”
An unmitigated failure, spending tens of billions, the government has yet to catch one terrorist. The real victims are the American people, loss of liberty and freedom. People are spied on, and people who support the Constitution and Freedom are now considered terrorists.

“The war on poverty”
An unmitigated failure. We’ve spent $20 trillion, and only produced more people on welfare, and the poverty level hasn’t changed. We now have more people on welfare than the entire population of Germany. We have the biggest welfare state in the history of the world.

“The war on drugs”
An unmitigated failure. The DEA and militarized police have failed to stem the supply or consumption of illegal drugs one iota. Drugs are more plentiful and cheaper than ever.

The government is the enemy, the statist fascists, the socialists, they are the real enemy.

The number of cops has quadrupled, corrections officers have quadrupled, we have more people in prison than any other country in history, all fighting drug use, which hasn’t changed in 50 years. And because of marijuana use, the DEA and drug task forces throughout the country are desperate to keep their jobs and billion dollar budgets. They will get more and more desperate as laws ease up on drug use. This type of thing will become the norm as the number of perps gets smaller. Book it danno.

All I’ve read says that Nazi Germany pre-1939 was a decent place to live if you were straight, German, protestant but not too religious, and willing to keep your mouth shut all the time.

The USA of today is a pretty decent place to live if you’re not straight, not white, not Christian (or at least not conservative Christian), and willing to put up with whatever vomit of lies the Obamination says that day.

So our Federal / State / Local governments have given the police the right to terrorize, assault, maim, or murder citizens just on suspicion.

All they need to do is ‘follow given procedures’. And they’re off the hook.

There needs to be clear levels of escalation before more drastic actions are taken.

OK, let’s pretend that is true. So, it is perfectly OK to throw one of those in a house without children and potentially injure innocent (or heck, even the suspect) the same way.

Gotcha.

The message could not be more clear.
