Those riots weren’t contained to four city blocks in south LA, they spread up and down the west coast from San Diego in the south to Portland, OR in the north.
The rioters were basically malcontents looking for any excuse to cause mayhem.
Your best protection, have at least 2-3 weeks of provisions, and a means to defend ones self and loved ones against random acts of violence. 2-3 months of provisions, including a supply of water would be even better, depending on how severe the unrest becomes. If you can survive the initial civil unrest, your chances of survival go up considerably.
If 2-3 months go by, and thugs are still controlling the local centers, one will have to make the decision, fight or flight. Flight carries it’s own risk, and raises the risk of ending up in a relocation camp.
Local communities that band together to provide for common security needs will be best off, but there still needs to be a means of food production, and as a society, we’re so far removed from local food production, it’s a real concern. Not all of us are as level headed as HF, and I question the ability of local farms to provide for even a modest community, which also shows my ignorance in this area. I can tell you from my experience growing up hunting and fishing, it’s a good thing our survival didn’t depend on eating what we caught.

The government will raise taxes, and people that are actually dumb enough to work for living will pay for it all, like they have since we started pissing away a trillion a year. Obama increased welfare spending by almost 50%, does that sound like the criminals in Washington have any plans to curtail? Not likely. There’s millions more Mexican residents now, more running across the border every day into the waiting arms of liberal progressives with EBT and SNAP and Medicaid cards in their hot little hands, and democrat voter registration cards. They don’t need no fucking ID to vote, and like dead people, they can vote democrat multiple times.
There’s already 10 socialist states that have more people on welfare than have jobs, the biggest being California. The democrats can’t raise taxes fast enough, but raising taxes is what they do best. And the Federal reserve will just keep printing money and loaning it to the liberal progressives so their socialist disaster and nation-destruction can continue unabated. Nobody is buying our IOU’s anymore, except the Fed, so maybe our economic days are numbered. The debt has been monetized, so they’re actually lending us zeroes and ones on some storage device, and anything we repay them is profit.
The last government shutdown the feds announced food stamps would continue working. They didn’t say anything about SS checks. They didn’t have to say anything about the biggest FSA of all, the US Congress.

If you’re in the midwest, or the row-crop farming areas in other parts of the country, your local farms are probably very capable of generating enough calories* for the local population – IF you can keep the flow of diesel fuel, fertilizer, ag chemicals, and ag spare parts going. That’s a big IF. No diesel fuel and your farms don’t work in their current model. Lose any of the others and your farms may still work, but with a huge loss of efficiency.
*Oh, and that’s just calories. As in raw field corn, soybeans, and wheat. You can eat the wheat with minimal processing, and the corn with slightly more. The soybeans can be cooked and made edible, but as a new type of food for most people. You are not getting your normal range of grocery products straight out of the field – a lot of that is done in very centralized processing plants. Your meat supply depends totally on what your local area happens to have.
So, in a farming area, if diesel keeps flowing the population probably won’t starve, but will be under stress. If diesel stops flowing, most farms will shut down.
