For public consumption, the fatuous haircut-in-search-of-a-brain, a.k.a. Secretary of State John Kerry, hauled out the dog-eared playbook for “negotiating a ceasefire” between the Palestinian Hamas leadership and Israel. Neither side takes him seriously, of course. In this historic moment of Islamic uproar across the entire region, Hamas is just following the larger script: act up and act out.
They would like to catch the momentum of rampaging ISIS next door, but Hamas is not a mobile force of mostly young male psychopaths. They’re stuck in Gaza embedded among their women and children doing what they can to eliminate Israel and replace it with an Islamic state. For the moment that means lobbing rockets from launch sites planted among the homes and institutions of daily life in the densely urbanized Gaza strip.
So far in the current offensive, they’ve launched over 700 missiles at Israel. Some of the rockets, purchased through the world’s arms bazaar from China, are powerful enough to reach Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. But they are poorly-targeted and Israel’s “iron dome” anti-missile system can intercept some of them before they land on anything.
Unlike previous offensives, when Hamas rocketeers could set up mobile Qassam missiles in alleyways or rooftops, and beat it a few minutes after firing, the new larger rockets require sturdier installations. Thus they can be systematically discovered and targeted. Hamas is quite willing to sacrifice the women and children who eat and sleep around their rocket installations for the propaganda value of pretending that they were not deliberately put in harm’s way.
Israel has accepted the reality that Hamas deliberately uses its own people as human shields and has opted to destroy the missile-launch sites in any case, because the alternative is to give Hamas free reign in bombarding Israel. One would think that world opinion would understand this equation. But there is little sympathy for Israel’s predicament, and little appreciation for Hamas’s calculated ruthlessness vis-à-vis its own people.
The birth-rate in Gaza is among the highest in the world. If it is a deliberate result of social policy, it is a cruel bargain for the Palestinians, who are apparently regarded as expendable by the Hamas leadership. In a culture that glorifies suicide bombings, routine human sacrifice must be normal, though to a Western sensibility it seems tragic.
It shapes up as a struggle to the death that will not be impeded by reason, the good intentions of others, or sentimentality. What Israel remembers is that nobody was on the side of its people in 1939 and they’ll be damned to make the same mistake again. This certainly sets up a situation of extreme political danger in the region, but no more now than the ISIS juggernaut, or the larger beef between the two basic branches of Islam, or the fate of the fragile Saud monarchy.
This is not as region of the world than can support large populations of human beings of any religious persuasion, and in the new age of extreme resource limits blind circumstance itself more than personalities or doctrines will determine who gets to inhabit what rockpile.
What’s changed is the perception that the USA has any role to play any longer even in the diplomatic theatrics. The Middle East is disintegrating faster than any polity in historical memory. It appears that, if anything, the USA has only succeeded in accelerating the process wherever we turn our attentions. Since the 1970s, we haven’t felt the ultimate consequence of trouble in that part of the world, which would be an interruption in the oil supply coming out of there.
Back then, there might have been something we could do about it. Now there is nothing we can do but stand on the sidelines and wait. In the meantime, wouldn’t it be a good idea to attend to our own problems, especially the critical need to prepare for American life in a post-oil world?

It appears that, if anything, the USA has only succeeded in accelerating the process wherever we turn our attentions. Since the 1970s, we haven’t felt the ultimate consequence of trouble in that part of the world, which would be an interruption in the oil supply coming out of there. EVERY generation of Christians has believed that Revelation was written specifically to THEM, for their generation. So, here we are in 2014, and bb believes Revelation 2:9 was written specifically for our generation, so that we Americans can identify the Real Joo from the Fake Joo. Again, this is a crock of shit.
Revelation chapters 2 and 3 were written for SPECIFIC CONGREGATIONS in the early Christian Church. The message to each of the 7 churches follows the same general format; 1) an address, 2) commendation, 3) reproof, 4) a promise, and 5) a call for Believers to persevere.
Yes, in a GENERAL sense, the message to the 7 churches back then also applies to The Church today. Believers in almost all ages have to deal with; persecution, forgiveness, judgment, perseverance, and both immediate and long-term consequences of their deeds and the accompanying rewards and punishments…. just as the 7 churches did. In that sense, and only that sense, the message to them applies to current day believers.
HOWEVER, that all falls apart when one attempts to apply SPECIFIC instruction of that bygone era to the here and now …. for example, thinking one can TODAY identify the “synagogue of Satan”
First of all, not even John, the supposed author of Revelation, identifies who the “synagogue of Satan” is !!! Was it the Pharisees? The Sadducees? The Scribes? Or any of the other dozen Jewish sects? We just don’t know! So, it seems rather ridiculous to assume we can know today, when the author himself keeps silent on the matter.
Second, most people identify the “synagogue of Satan” as those Jews who persecuted the Christians. In fact, that verse has been used by many throughout the ages to persecute da Joos. Some people go so far as to say that virtually ALL Jews are of the “synagogue of Satan” because they don’t believe in the Messiah. Well, that sounds like it could be logical, except it’s …….. wait for it …… more bullshit. The reason is simple enough; there were NO Christians alive at the time John wrote this. The was no Sacred Heart Catholic or Antioch First Baptist. There were Jews who followed the Law, Pharisees. They were Jews who did not, Sadducees. There were Jews who followed war, Zealots. There were Jews who believed in Jesus as Messiah, and Jews who believed in other Messiahs …. but they were always and only, Jews. So that explanation also doesn’t work for me.
Third, Real Joo vs Fake Joo is the most retarded game in the history of religion. Even in current day Israel citizenship and other privileges are often determined by identifying ones genuine Jewishness. The methodology of doing so is bizarrely convoluted, and if it wasn’t so tragic, it would be hilarious. Find-a-real-Joo is a game used by BOTH sides – Joo and non-Joo — mostly to persecute one group of people at the expense of another. I wish it would cease, but it won’t. And to bring that bullshit here to TBP and telling others to research it (I’m looking at you bb) is pure fucking nonsense.
My own personal belief is that John was talking about the evil religious leaders in the Jewish community ….. those Jewish rabbis who rejected Jesus and conspired to kill him … the very leaders Jesus himself referred to as “hypocrites,” “snakes,” “vipers,” “blind leaders of the blind,” and worthy of “hell”. Westcoaster – Israel kills more Palestinians because they are stronger militarily. Palestinians fire a rocket randomly at Israel, Israel finds where the rocket was fired from (often next to or inside a school, a mosque, or an apartment block), and fires a rocket to take out the Palestinian weapon. Palestinians die as a result. Palestinians in their outrage fire off some more rockets without a hope in hell of hitting their intended target, and Israel takes out a few more weapons installations.

You cannot make this shit up. The Muslims are in this for the long run. I believe they will eventually win the war of attrition. It may take decades or centuries, but unless Israel decides to drive the Palestinians into the ocean, the Muslims will win in the end.

I mean, really now?
President Obama’s call back in 2009 for a “new beginning” between America and the Muslim world — a relationship defined over the prior decade by 9/11 and the Iraq war — has descended into a foreign policy sandstorm that has left Washington dizzied by ever-changing powerbrokers, and its closest ally in the region more isolated and threatened.
The deadly conflict between Hamas and Israel, which is intensifying and widening by the day, is just the latest symptom of the Middle East mess.
Israel has created its own mess.
Nobody should tolerate terrorism. But what is it when you forcibly remove people from their land and build “settlements” on it, then make them into armed enclaves that prohibit passage through and around them?
How is that not terrorism?
Does terrorism justify more terrorism? No, but it does explain it.
There is no “right” in what’s going on over there. We made this mess after WWII with our allies, but after more than 60 years it’s time for us to admit that the governments and people involved are allegedly adults and not only capable but responsible to deal with it on their own terms — and without our money or weapons being poured into one side of it.
The same is true over in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere. Yeah, ISIS has “declared” a Caliphate. Fine. Let them try to enforce it. So long as they don’t try to come into our country let them shoot each other if they so choose. Just don’t give them the guns or bullets to do it with.
Make clear that there’s one ground rule: You blow up or harm an American not on your soil, or bring one bit of your bullcrap into this country, and we will deploy our military with the following single rule of engagement: If it moves then shoot it until it doesn’t.
Make damn sure that CAIR and all of the other “peaceful” organizations understand this quite-clearly as well: When we said no funds, which are fungible with weapons, we meant it — and we will enforce that policy using the full force of law. If you don’t like that then pack your crap up and leave.
You want to speak, that’s fine. We have a First Amendment and we respect it. But when it comes to passing money around we understand it’s fungible and you do too, and we’re not dumb enough to fall for your crap about it all being “humanitarian.”
There’s a basic rule one should follow when those who are sworn enemies of your principles and form of government are attempting to kill one another: LET THEM.

SSS , it is very relevant . I have never heard any of the Christian TV ministers talk about these identity switches of the khazars or the Arabs who call themselves Palestinians. In doing a little more research I found most of these ministers are getting money from the Jewish lobby here in America . The same Jewish groups that owns congress. Same with the Arabs . The Saudi government gives billions of dollars to universities around the world to promote the (Palestinians )cause. The khazars wanted a land of their own so they stole Israel and none of the Arabs states wanted the arabs that were made homeless by the khazars so they made up the whole Palestinian cause.
