OK. It has been suggested that a “Pictorial Essay” on cathedrals might be of interest.
Hence, this poll. Understand why I am asking for a poll. I want to do more than post pictures …. that I can do in a couple hours. I want to tell the story behind it all …. and that takes a lot of time, which I’d rather not waste if there is little to no interest.
This is also a CALL FOR IDEAS …. your input.
For example, maybe I shouldn’t limit it to Medieval Cathedrals …. or, even Christianity. There are tremendous “churches” for many of the world’s religions. For example, Islam has some stunning architecture.
Speaking if Islam ….. the LAST thing I would want for that post is to get into ridiculous fucking religious debates. That would ruin everything. I would be tempted to ask Admin ahead of time to delete such nonsense … but, I wont.
So, the ball is in your court. What do you want to see?
I think it should be all religions and I think the historical background of who and why they were built would be fascinating.
I’ll give you until Friday to pull it all together.

Al Hambra in Grenada Spain is magnificent. It has a mosque but is more of a palace. For our 25th wedding anniversary I designed and had made a white gold and diamond ring that features a carving taken from Al Hambra around the band. Arabic and Islamic architecture is some of the most beautiful in the world!
The cathedrals in Segovia and Toledo are splendid as well.

Numero uno, by a wide margin, is the Gaudi cathedral in Barcelona. Gotta include that.
Numero dos is the Mezquita in Cordoba – Catholic church built inside the most amazing mosque.

Your post on castles was informative, fascinating, and about the right length. I’ve read through it twice. Your personal comments add a lot and make the article more interesting.
If you do an essay on cathedrals, stick to those in the Western tradition from Romanesque times. Later, if your historical/pictorial studies catch on, as I think they will, you can branch out into Greek/Roman, Eastern architecture, modern architecture, etc.
I vote that you leave out Presidential libraries.
Lastly, Administrator should give you beyond Friday if it takes you more time to research, write, and make as compelling a presentation as Castles is.

And I love the architecture and art of the old Persian culture, which predates Islam by a few centuries. You have to remember that the middle east was once the seat of civilization and was home to societies vastly more learned and advanced than that which followed after these ancient civilizations began to implode because of resource depletion and increasing desertification of their formerly fertile and moist lands.
The collapse of the ancient civilizations of the middle east ought to be a warning to us all, of how easily all the learning and advances of civilization are lost, which almost always happens when the resources a society depends on suddenly become scarce, and what was easy and taken for granted in lusher times becomes impossible when dire shortages of basic necessities become the normal order of things. Harsh, brutal conditions make harsh, brutal people, and the lost knowledge is replaced by superstition and irrationality.
