I was shopping at Lowe’s recently to buy some plumbing supplies. One item was purchased with the chance that I would have to take it back for refund, and I told the department associate that I might return it. That indeed happened. When I returned, I had a brief conversation with the lady at the customer service REFUND desk about merchandise returns.

I asked her if people were returning items for refund for dubious reasons. She grinned and told me several stories. One customer brought back a $2,000 riding lawn mower, used it for the entire summer (3 months plus) and then brought it back. I don’t know whether they took it back or not. She said they have had many returns of buckets of paint (1 gallon and larger) that were returned filled with water and rocks, and large boxed items that were returned with the box filled with old blankets, rags and weighed junk. I had heard enough. I was too embarrassed to ask her if they called the police due to this obvious fraud. Probably so.

I thanked her for her candor and walked out. You’d be surprised (maybe not) what people will tell you if you just ask.
