Free To Choose? Obama Administration Likely To Impose “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” Regulation After Midterm Elections
The midterm elections are on Tuesday, November 4th. After the elections, the Obama Administration is expected to operationalize the “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” regulation in December.
What is the proposed “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” regulation?
According to the New York Post,
After a delay, the administration’s final “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” regulation is now expected to be announced in December. Originally scheduled for finalization in October, the new Housing and Urban Development Department rules will force all cities and suburbs to accept subsidized housing in the name of racial diversity, superceding all local zoning ordinances.
The Orwellian-sounding regulation would force some 1,200 municipalities to redraw zoning maps to racially diversify suburban neighborhoods.
Under the scheme, HUD plans to map every US neighborhood by race and publish “geospatial data” pinpointing racial imbalances. Areas deemed overly segregated will be forced to change their zoning laws to allow construction of subsidized and other affordable housing to bring more low-income minorities into “white suburbs.” HUD’s maps will be used to select affordable housing sites.
It’s part of the administration’s ambitious agenda to eliminate “racial segregation,” ZIP code by ZIP code, block by block, through the systematic dismantling of allegedly “exclusionary” building ordinances. In effect, federal bureaucrats will have the power to rezone your neighborhood.
Some cities are already complaining about the new regulation.
Here is how it will work. HUD and it’s agents will create racial maps and then “encourage” affordable housing construction in non-integrated neighborhoods.
The cost if a municipality doesn’t comply? Loss of HUD block grant funding. Or worse.
School busing was a previous attempt at “equality” of education, but that venture failed badly and was abandoned. So now HUD wants to bus people to your neighborhood … permanently.
Selective Enforcement
Of course, the HUD maps of racial divergence will not be applied equally. Does anyone believe that Democrat Nancy Pelosi will allow affordable housing projects in her swank San Francisco neighborhood? Will billionaires in the San Francisco Bay Area from Google, Apple, etc., allow affordable housing projects in Portola Valley, Los Altos Hills, etc? Will wealthy horse owners in Northern Virginia allow affordable housing projects plopped in the middle of their farms? Not likely.
This is massive Federal overreach and negates “voting with your feet.” That is, if you choose to move away from bad schools, crime, etc., the Federal government will negate your freedom of choice and plop the same problems in your new neighborhood.
And I doubt if President Obama will allow an affordable housing project next to whatever swank golf course he decides to move to after he leaves office.
No, the “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” Regulation is another attack on the middle class.
This new regulation comes from HUD, the same people that brought us “The National Homeownership Strategy: Partners in the American Dream” under President Bill Clinton that turned out to be a nightmare for millions of American households.
For 20 years, I have maintained a long list of government agencies that i believe urgently need to be sunset, and HUD is at the top of the list. Even the loathesome HEW hasn’t done as much damage to our cities as HUD.
There’s nothing new about any of the policies you are talking about here. The Section 8 program started wrecking beautiful, intact urban neighborhoods in the 1970s, and doubled down on the damage in the 80s and onward as it was noted that many urban neighborhoods remained “segregated” in spite of “fair housing” laws, and, in the 90s, the rule that no landlord may refuse a tenant because the source of the rent money is Section 8.
If you live in a neighborhood of apartments, you are vulnerable, no matter how swank the buildings are. A very swank old building in St Louis went Section 8 at the inception of the program in the early 70s, and the ruin of the beautiful old place precipitated the slumification of the entire surrounding neighborhood. Every beautiful urban neighborhood in the country is vulnerable, especially if it has a lot of multifamily. Your only recourse is to convert to condo, and write by-laws that prohibit rentals.
The only people immune are people who live in expensive SF homes in enclaves of same, which are priced far above Section 8 thresholds, like Nancy. Just as so many rich liberals who advocated bussing to achieve integration never subjected their own kids to it because they sent them to expensive private schools, these people are sheltered from the consequences of the policies that trash everyone else’s neighborhoods.. . .. until the day comes when the blight creeps right up to the gates of their cushy, insulated enclaves.
Here in broward county (ft. lauderdale) Florida, it’s even worse. They have already built the apartments for our new 100,000 haitians that Obama just fast tracked, and we are just awaiting delivery. I have been pointing out to anyone who will listen, ‘who do you think they are building these for?’ We haven’t had a surge in employment that might increase demand. Now we know.
Well at least they’re making it easy to figure out who the enemy is.
Just yet another piece in the increasingly blatant, impossible-to-ignore war against the middle class.
I’m thinking that most of us near the Canadian border still don’t have that much to worry about.

President Obama is allowing 100,000 Haitians into our country without visas as part of the fundamental transformation of America that he promised.
Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said the administration’s Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program — which will allow thousands of Haitians awaiting a U.S. visa to enter the country and legally apply for work permits — is “an irresponsible overreach of the executive branch’s authority.”
“Which countries are next on President Obama’s list?” Mr. Grassley said. “Will there by medical screenings before entry? Will work permits be granted automatically? How will this affect American workers?”
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the branch of the Department of Homeland Security that handles immigration benefits cases, announced Friday the program to unite Haitians already living in the U.S. with family members abroad will ramp up in 2015.
At that time the State Department’s National Visa Center will begin notifying families who may be eligible to take part in the program. Those immigrants will allowed to apply for work permits while waiting for issuance of their permanent visas.
The agency said the program will expedite “safe, legal and orderly migration.”
“The rebuilding and development of a safe and economically strong Haiti is a priority for the United States. The Haitian Family Reunification Parole program promotes a fundamental underlying goal of our immigration system — family reunification,” said Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. “It also supports broader U.S. goals for Haiti’s reconstruction and development by providing the opportunity for certain eligible Haitians to safely and legally immigrate sooner to the United States.”
