Apparently the cops are going with the story that the rookie officer had his gun out and used his gun hand to try to open a door when it discharged accidentally. So it’s not at all like he was just startled and shot an innocent guy. No. It’s complpetely not like that at all.

More information please.

Jackson, with a few thoughts on cops and their victims,
Jackson, with a few thoughts on cops and their victims,

I had close contact with the police in three small cities from 1973 to 2011. (The cities’ populations were between 11,000 and 100,000.)

The smaller the town and the farther back in time from now, the more civil and effective were the police. Tact, guile, and strong words were their weapons then. There were no cops killing ‘suspects’ or even shots fired incidents until about 2000 in places I worked. That was my experience.

In recent years the attitude of the police has changed. They’ve become more aggressive, confrontive, and forceful. In the last dozen years our city of 100,000 has had a few police shootings. Knowing the facts, all I thought were quick draw killings. Generally I’ve seen the police become more arrogant in dealing with people and more pushy in recent years.

What’s caused this increase in official violence? In no particular order, the police know they can get away with it. Juries believe the police and, when it comes to prosecuting, DAs won’t go after the cops they work closely with in police-likely criminal shooting cases. The society, from constant war news and violence on tv and in video games, accepts state killing as a standard. Cops, with good reason, feel more threatened. Too many guys they contact are brash, disrespectful, and aggressive. In other words, the citizen-cop dynamic has changed greatly and, fearing violence, the police are more likely to react violently.

What’s this mean for you? Be aware and be respectful when the man with the badge and gun wants to talk with you. In your car, keep your hands on the steering wheel. Remember it’s ‘Yes, sir, No, sir” when quizzed, and ‘Thank you’ afterwards. The times are different now, learn to adapt.

@ Jackson – “What’s caused this increase in official violence?”

The number one reason is because the new police academy is Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jackson,. The advice to keep it non confrontational and non argumentative is a good one, but while I would keep my replies short, I certainly will not call them sir (maybe if it’s some butch bulldyke I will).
Sure as hell am not going to say “thank you” if the cop initiated the encounter and inconvenienced me. If it was me that seeked out help and received it, a thank you will be given.

Why are cops more aggressive? Multitude of reasons.
1) Government allowed the country get polluted by 3rd world human trash.
2) Many new cops are war veterans.
3) Roid rage (lots of cops using steroids).
4) Generational changes – society as a whole going down the drain.

The are in no particular order, and only a small sample.
