As a (non-liberal) feminist myself, there is nothing that so excites my bile and makes me feel so much hatred as Saudi Arabia, the worst human rights abuser in the world. The U.S. has made many deals with many vicious devils to obtain the resources we self-entitled ‘muricans so wantonly squander, but none so odious as this one.
Every single president clear back to FDR has picked up the soap for the Saudi regime, while persecuting and attacking much milder regimes. Iraq, for example, was not even a Muslim-led country- Sadaam was not a practicing Muslim and in fact aroused the ire of Al-Queda- yet we overthrew this relatively orderly regime and since we did that, the place has degenerated into a hotbed of Islamic extremism, with women as the chief victims as honor killings have gone off the charts.
Obama is no worse than Bush, whose family has enjoyed a cozy, semi-familial relationship with the house of Saud since the time of Prescott Bush, a known Nazi supporter and friend of Islam (which also supported the Nazi regime)
This is what we’re doing to keep the morons in this country in gas for their F-150s, not to mention the oceans of fuel needed to maintain our vastly overbuilt network of concrete infrastructure.
The only thing I don’t understand is why people in this country were so critical of Michelle Obama for not covering her head. How glad we should be that she did not. For one thing, Nancy Reagan, Laura Bush, and Condi Rice didn’t cover their heads over there, but more to the point, no American leader or wife of same should ever, ever grant that vicious culture the respect that they refuse to tender us on our own soil, and which it’s about goddam time we demanded. I am the last person in the world to tell another person what he or she should wear, and I respect the religious freedom of others, but I am sick to death at the sight of women in hajibs, burkas and veils in my neighborhood. Actually, feminists DO attack that guy, but not in the numbers we should.
We should be demanding an end to our relationship with the Saud regime, and other Arab nations as well, but when it comes to a choice between defending human rights, or scoring the resources needed to support an extravagant lifestyle, most people will vote for the latter. It’s OK as long as it is only others in a land far away whose rights are being violated.
We see no connection between our support for the vicious regime and culture in Saudi Arabia, as well as our support of neo-fascist regimes in the southern hemisphere…. and the increasing assaults on the rights of our own citizens here.
