Putin Sends Nuclear Bombers Over English Channel: “Transponders Turned Off… Invisible to Air Traffic Control”

Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t been one to back down in response to sanctions against his country and attacks on his economy. Rather, he has stepped up not only his rhetoric, but his military activities as well.

His latest move is yet another show of force to let the West know Russia is prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect its interests.

The U.K.’s Royal Air Force scrambled fighter jets on Thursday after a pair of nuclear-capable Russian bombers flew across a busy civilian air traffic corridor above the English Channel. The bombers had their transponders turned off, British officials said, making them invisible to many air traffic control systems. The incident disrupted multiple flights – and ended with the U.K. government demanding the Russian ambassador appear at the Foreign Office to explain the actions.

This latest incident comes on the heels of similar flyovers by nuclear bombers along the west coast of the United States from Alaska all the way down to California. It has even been speculated that Russia may have tested a new weapon last year leading to a shut down of Los Angeles commercial air traffic control systems.

Earlier this morning former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said that the U.S. and Russia are engaged in another cold war but warned that it could well go hot should tensions between the two nations continue to escalate.

Late last year Vladimir Putin made similar remarks:

He accused Barack Obama of adopting a “hostile” approach in naming Russia as a threat to the world in the U.S. president’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 24.

“We hope that our partners will realize the futility of attempts to blackmail Russia and remember what consequences discord between major nuclear powers could bring for strategic stability.”

Putin said that Obama had identified Russian aggression in Europe as one of the three “major threats facing humanity,” alongside the Ebola virus and Islamic State.

“Together with the sanctions against entire sectors of our economy, this approach can be called nothing but hostile,” Putin said.

Russia’s ally against the West, China, also seems to be making some bold moves. According to a new satellite photo taken over the Nanji Islands they are building a refueling complex, the design and location of which indicate they are positioning military assets in anticipation of a war with Japan. In 2010 a missile launch off the coast of California was attributed to China by some observers who believe that they, too, are signaling their willingness to engage in a global conflict should it become necessary.

With the economies on both sides of the pond unraveling, Russian influence in former East Bloc regions growing, and U.S. boots already on the ground across Europe, it may only be a matter of time before the relatively innocuous poking and prodding goes critical.

That nuclear weapons are even on the table is frightening. What’s even scarier are the psychopaths who have their fingers on the buttons.

There are important things to worry about in this world. And some Russian plane flying without its transponder turned on isn’t one of them. Who in the world would think this constitutes “toughness” on the part of anyone. It is the equivalent of some kid TPing their friends house.

I recognize that in modern “hysterical about everything” sissified America we would send in a SWAT team to arrest this toilet paper terrorist perpetrator, but adults don’t need to carry this same type of fear mongering to the next level.

City of London is the most evil place on the planet, perhaps Putin sent them for a practice run to rid the planet of their demonic control.

I strongly disagree. This game of “nuclear chicken” is harmless …. until that one time when neither side “blinks”.

Story #1

Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant-colonel in the military intelligence section of the Soviet Union’s secret service, reluctantly eased himself into the commander’s seat in the underground early warning bunker south of Moscow.

It should have been his night off but another officer had gone sick and he had been summoned at the last minute.

Before him were screens showing photographs of underground missile silos in the Midwest prairies of America, relayed from spy satellites in the sky.

He and his men watched and listened on headphones for any sign of movement – anything unusual that might suggest the U.S. was launching a nuclear attack.

This was the height of the Cold War between the USSR and the U.S. Both sides packed a formidable punch – hundreds of rockets and thousands of nuclear warheads capable of reducing the other to rubble.

It was a game of nerves, of bluff and counterbluff. Who would fire first? Would the other have the chance to retaliate?

The flying time of an inter-continental ballistic missile, from the U.S. to the USSR, and vice-versa, was around 12 minutes. If the Cold War were ever to go ‘hot’, seconds could make the difference between life and death.

Everything would hinge on snap decisions. For now, though, as far as Petrov was concerned, more hinged on just getting through another boring night in which nothing ever happened.

Except then, suddenly, it did. A warning light flashed up, screaming red letters on a white background – ‘LAUNCH. LAUNCH’. Deafening sirens wailed. The computer was telling him that the U.S. had just gone to war.

The blood drained from his face. He broke out in a cold sweat. But he kept his nerve. The computer had detected missiles being fired but the hazy screens were showing nothing untoward at all, no tell-tale flash of an missile roaring out of its silo into the sky. Could this be a computer glitch rather than Armageddon?

Story #2

On Nov. 9, 1979, four command centers for the U.S. nuclear arsenal received data on their radar screens indicating that the Soviet Union had launched a full-scale nuclear first strike on the United States.

Over the next six minutes, planes were launched and nuclear missiles initialized for an immediate retaliatory strike. The president’s National Emergency Airborne Command Post — an armored jumbo jet with radiation shielding and advanced communications capabilities, meant to allow the president to remain in contact with the government and armed forces during a nuclear war — was also launched, though curiously without the president aboard.

However, the alarm was canceled because no sensors or satellites detected an actual Soviet missile launch. The alarm had been caused by computer software used for training exercises depicting a nightmare scenario Soviet first strike. Senator Charles Percy, who happened to be at NORAD headquarters during this event, said the reaction was one of overwhelming panic and terror.

How many more near-misses will there be … before someone makes a mistake and unleashes hell??

That’s not fear-mongering. It’s realizing we have shitfuk crazyfuk leaders who don’t give a damn that their desire to prove ‘my-dick-is-bigger-than-your-dick’ may very well be the death of us all.

The English channel is shared with France.

Did they surrender already or didn’t they care as much as the Brits?

“The bombers had their transponders turned off, British officials said, making them invisible to many air traffic control systems. ”
—-from the article

Well, turning off the transponders DON’T make you “invisible,” it just makes it harder to identify exactly who you are. The accompanying picture to the article is a Russian TU-160 strategic bomber. It is the largest strategic bomber in the world, uses a highly reflective white paint (see photo), and has exactly zero Stealth capabilities. None. Its sheer size makes it easy for almost any radar to “paint the aircraft” and follow its path.

Americans, Russians, and sometimes the Brits have been playing these games since the 1950s. In this case, the Russians were rattling the Brits’ cage. No big deal. Really.

Nothing requires you to have your transponder on in uncontrolled airspace. Transponder on or off SHOULD make little difference for Britains defence radar. Maybe the real story is they didn’t show up on radar?

SSS

“Maybe the real story is they didn’t show up on radar?”

The Russian Air Force has no stealth aircraft (it does have stealth prototype fighters it is currently testing). None. The first Russian operational stealth fighter, not bomber, isn’t expected to be deployed until next year. The Brits intercepted two Russian bombers. The only stealth bomber on the planet is America’s B-2.

What’s sick is the reality that neo-con “think tanks” have already war-gamed a scenario where nuclear war is “survivable”. Although 80% or more of Human life on Earth would be destroyed, these fucks view such an outcome as “acceptable”.
And yes, I remember that missile launch off the Catalina coast back in 2010. Pentagon concluded it was the vapor trail of an airliner, even though the footage I saw looked exactly like a sub-fired missile.

What makes you so sure? Stealth means stealth…how can you know if ‘they’ don’t tell you? Rest assured that there is stuff form the ‘Skunk Works’ that we can’t imagine.

prolly’ just more scare mongering.

Today’s triple whammy of ‘escalation’ appears more focused on the non-Russian side as first, France begins sending tanks into Poland; second, Ukraine shifts its tanks to the front-line; and third – and potentially most inflammatory for Putin – NATO has confirmed plans to create permanent command centers in Eastern Europe. Putin has not responded yet but reports of ‘nuclear bombers’ flying above the English Channel “with transponders turned off,” suggests the sabre rattling continues.

Transponder off means more than simply being difficult for ATC(Air Traffic Control) to track an airplane. It also disables TCAS, the collision avoidance system that all commercial airliners have on board. I don’t know what “over the English Channel” means, but if these bombers are flying across airways or jet routes, this is a recipe for disaster. No transponder means no TCAS and could lead to a midair collision. Not very fucking smart on the part of Ivan.

Because the Brits intercepted the 2 Russian bombers and identified them as TU-160s. Compare the TU-160 photo with the B-2 below. See any difference?
