Arming for Riots Across America? Homeland Stockpiling “Less Lethal Specialty Munitions”

Tyler Durden's picture

Riot police of the Western world have recently come up against a succession of formidable threats. In Frankfurt for instance, German authorities were forced to square off against a legion of angry clowns who, in an effort to express their displeasure at austerity measures advocated by the ECB (which was at the time celebrating the completion of their new Frankfurt headquarters), set quite a few things on fire. Meanwhile, in the mean streets of Montreal, an “association of young communists” forgot to provide authorities with a protest itinerary, which led police to settle the matter with rubber bullets and sound bombs. Finally, in Quebec City, riot police were accosted by dozens of students who wanted, among other things, for the library to stay open longer, leaving authorities with no choice but to show protesters the meaning of “crowd control” via point-blank tear gas gun assaults. Here are the visuals:

Given that, and considering several recent contentious situations in Ferguson (Michael Brown) and New York (Eric Garner), it appears the Department of Homeland Security (via the US Customs and Border Protection dept) is intent on enhancing its ability to bring unruly crowds under control, so if you are a “less lethal” munitions supplier, you may want to check out the business opportunity the government has for you. Here’s the official summary:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intends to solicit responses to Request for Information (RFI) 20082225-JTC for Less Lethal Specialty Munitions (LLSM) for use by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). CBP is interested in incorporating commercial and industry practices that support this type of procurement. To accomplish this, CBP intends to make industry a partner in all facets of the acquisition process, specifically by considering existing market capabilities, strengths and weaknesses for the acquisition of this commodity. Responses to this RFI will allow CBP to incorporate industry input into the initial stages of the procurement. Note: RFI responses will NOT be shared with other industry suppliers and will solely be used as part of the procurement planning process.

In case you’re wondering what types of munitions Homeland Security is looking for, here’s a list: a variety of smoke canisters, an assortment of crowd management projectile cartridges, controlled noise and light distraction devices (Batman may also be looking to purchase some of these), and the always useful “ferret rounds,” which, for those unfamiliar, will blow apart any barriers protesters may be hiding behind and upon impact, will introduce chemical agents into the surrounding environment.

How all of this is useful for “border protection” we don’t know, but for a more detailed breakdown, you can read the entire list below. There’s also a helpful summary courtesy of SHFTPlan.com:

Protests don’t matter one bit.

Taxpayers choosing ( or forced by layoff) to sit down and read a book instead of doing something taxable?

That will shake the oligarchs to their foundations. Everything depends on the tax slaves sweating in the quarry cutting the stones for Pharaoh’s latest pyramid. and contrary to belief, the jack-booted thugs cannot force those slaves to work.

“…and the always useful “ferret rounds,” which, for those unfamiliar, will blow apart any barriers protesters may be hiding behind and upon impact, will introduce chemical agents into the surrounding environment.”

Calm your tits, Tyler.

You TBPers know that I’m against the militarization of our police and the direction our country is going. I rage just as hard as anyone – save maybe Stucky – when copfuks do egregious shit. But old Tyler here is just grandstanding, writing bullshit. If he’s gonna write some shit, then write the truth.

This is the “Ferret round” that “blows apart” barriers (shyeah..)…

The “Ferret Rounds” are frangible projectiles filled with chemical agent either liquid or dry powder. Spin stabilization from fins and barrel rifling can afford a safe standoff distance with some accuracy.

The “Ferret Round” is designed to penetrate barriers, such as windows, particleboard doors, and interior walls. Upon impacting the barrier, the nose cone ruptures and instantaneously delivers the agent payload inside of a structure.

There are 3 types of Ferret Round. Types I, II and III. Type I won’t penetrate shit, unless by accident. Type II will go through stuff like drywall and single pane glass. Type III will go through stuff like hollow core doors and double or triple paned glass. Most Ferret Rounds sold today are Type II.

Here’s the official list of “Advantages and Disadvantages” of the Ferret Round.

ADVANTAGES OF “FERRET ROUNDS”

Fast deployment
Accuracy
Easy to use can be fired from most duty shotguns
Can be fired from behind cover
Good Penetration
Non-Burning – Disperses on impact
Visibility – Rounds produce little smoke or cloud
Persistency – Contamination clean-up

DISADVANTAGES OF “FERRET ROUNDS”

May cause suspects to think he is being shot at
Can be fatal
Round must strike an object to disperse
Limited amount of agent
No smoke – No psychological effect
Easy to block the release of agent into a room
Agent does not always penetrate target area
Persistency leads to agent evacuation when windows broken
Dry power drops to ground quicker than aerosol
Carrier is carcinogenic (Methylene Chloride)

The Ferret Round is NON-PYROTECHNIC. It’s just a plastic container with some fins attached, with CS powder (or whatever) loaded inside. Will it go through a piece of particle-board? If the shooter is close enough, yes. If he’s too far away, no. The little plastic container – about the size of an old 35mm film case – hit something like a window or hunk of particle board and it breaks the nose. Then it bounces around in the room with it’s payload of whatever… and speaking of the payload, one 12ga Ferret round carries a pitiful amount of CS when compared to a 40mm launcher or a CS grenade…

It doesn’t “blow apart” anything. It’s not a pyrotechnic. It can inflict a lethal wound if someone is struck in the head with one fired from close range. In fact, the 12ga ferret rounds produce such low gas pressure, they won’t even cycle a semiautomatic shotgun. Not exactly a barn burner…

Other than that, whoopdy shit. Hardly anything to panic over.

All their little toys aren’t going to help tptb in the end. It will just buy them time to firm up their escape plans. As they fly away to their island or mountain fortresses, they will look out the windows at the rising columns of smoke appearing everywhere and say “So long, Suckers!”

I’m not so sure about the so called 3 Percenters in my area. A few weeks ago they held a gun rights protest (despite the fact that no one was attempting to take their rights) in front of the federal court house. Dip shit dad even had his young children open carrying rifles like he was while mom filmed the whole thing. The federal police and US marshals came out and gave the dingleberry a dozen chances at least to step on to the sidewalk and continue their protest even though the federales told them they didn’t want to take their guns but know, that wasn’t good enough.

If the 3 Percenters think that intentionally antagonizing the po po when there was absolutely no need or reason to antagonize the po po was the prudent thing to do then fuck them. They clearly lack the ability to think straight and do nothing more than offer up proof to the gun nazis that their cause is righteous. They sure as fuck don’t represent me or my friends. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near these dumb fuks when the SHTF. (which is why I’ll never attend a gun rights protest) They’ll probably end up killing each other and many others like me in their own crossfire. Funny thing is they always seem disappointed with the turn out and support they get at their little protests.
