THERE’S NO HOMEWORK IN FINLAND

Hat tip Gayle

Two key observations are no diversity in Finland dragging the scores down and they select only the best as their teachers, while we select mediocre for the most part.

1) Only the Top 10% become teachers.
2) No Common Core.
3) No Neegrows.

There ya go.

Students start school at age 7, in school for 5 hours, and about 165 teaching days a year. There goes the baby sitter.

More importantly, per Stucky #2 above, “Finnish teachers take on significant responsibility for curriculum and assessment, as well as experimentation with and improvement of teaching methods” because “The national curriculum is only broad guidelines”.

“they select only the best as their teachers, while we select mediocre for the most part.”

We don’t select teachers. They self select. And, once employed, almost impossible to fire.

Gayle

Like the rest of Europe, Finland is under heavy pressure from Muslim immigration. Let’s see what their test scores look like 10 years from now.

@ Stucky: You forget, No Meso-Americans, either.
@ Jim: Less time in school, more time in care of mom (or dad). US schools are treated like daycare centers by a plurality of parents, even parents who DON’T WORK!
@ Rick: “impossible to fire” is found ONLY in places like Chicago (the exception.) In my wife’s district, tenure is essentially meaningless now. As with the Modern Corporation, they are getting rid of “older, more experienced, better educated” teachers in droves as a budget-saving measure. All it takes is two “needs improvement” (for completely subjective reasons) evaluations and the teacher is gone. The union, taking a big cut of $ from each paycheck, is toothless (love it or hate it.)

Imagine you are tasked with making silk purses but have no control whatsoever over your raw materials. Now there’s a FLOOD of raw material coming from Central America, and Hillary’s Village is raising ever more of what shows up in your production line (classroom.)

In this country, teachers are regarded as near subhuman, and the “fix” for the entire system is to blame those on the front line, not the politicians and generals setting up the whole sorry mess.

You hear about the hard-leftist morons, the union thugs and the test-cheating crooks, but you don’t hear about the talented teachers who are thwarted at every turn in their effort to actually assist their charges in learning reading, writing and arithmetic. You don’t hear about the river of politically-correct BS flowing down on them from principals, administrators or (above all) the state education bureaucracy.

DC Sunsets

What is needed is liberty is education.

Repeal the damn laws preventing people from opening their own schools. The “fear” is that idiots will open them, but the truth is that this is all about controlling people.

Stupid people are already running schools. They work for state education bureaucracies.

Here IRONY for you:

Common Core (boo, hiss) is predicated on asking students to THINK about things. The “new new” approach is to introduce concepts, and if kids have questions, try to get them to work through the answers themselves, not spoon-feed them answers.

Sounds great, right?

Only if the adults in the room “get” it. Most don’t. Many people in “teaching” get their self-worth from being “needed.” They often demonstrate how “needed” they are by helping students…helping and helping and helping.

Kids quickly learn that the more helpless they appear, the more help they receive. My wife’s classroom has a bunch of special ed kids in it, and SURPRISE!, they actually get among the best grades in the class.

Well, actually, my wife figures she should put the names of the adult teacher(s) who help them and give them the answers on the Report Card, since it was the adult that proved she could do (for instance) 4th grade math.

(facepalm.)

My wife and I would open a school in an eye-blink if it were legal to do so. It would be a place people would clamor to enroll their sons and daughters, and I figure it would cost less than half what the tax-supported system spends per head. But it would not take unruly, damaged, village-raised riffraff. It’s the riffraff that costs so much to educate (warehouse, actually) and the families contributing those village-raised kids aren’t the ones paying the taxes anyway.

There is no solution to the predicament now in place, with vast numbers of low-IQ people producing vast numbers of low-IQ, nearly ineducable kids. There will be no place for them in the future economy, all they will be is useless mouths to feed who produce nothing but social chaos. We’re in for a rough ride.

Gayle nails it. Finland “worked” only as long as it was homogenous and Northern European.

People think the conditions in which they live are permanent; they think like Orwell’s Ministry of Truth where different history went down the Memory Hole, so people have always been this way and will always be this way. This is simply not true. Today is not the same as yesterday, and tomorrow may be quite different still.

The notions of open borders and “we are the world” equalitarianism are historical oddities. They are nearly unknown if you understand much about the history of Man.

When this fad (and it is a FAD) passes, and people revert to their normal distrust of those who are “different,” the urge to re-segregate will likely be irresistible. I doubt it will happen peacefully, much to my dismay. It would have been better if people had been a little less inviting. The coming paradigm shift is going to hurt a lot of innocent people who were simply following the herd.

I went to school in a culturally and demographically homogeneous part of the US. Poor and lower middle class white folk across the board.

Our graduation rate and state test performance were far, far above average.

The US will never achieve ethnic homogeneity, but we used to have a certain standard of cultural homogeneity. Outside of food and swear words, becoming a US citizen implied a certain amount of “melting”. We all worked hard, valued productivity, and strove for freedom.

We need to bring that mindset back….but good luck, its easier to train people to be hardworking and self-sufficient from the get-go than it is to train a fat cat not to be fat.

Finland has always had a pretty homogenous population that speaks the same language and has the same values. (a few Swedish speakers there too but they almost all also speak Finnish as well and have Finnish values)

That is starting to change and Finland is probably going to go the way the U.S. and most of the rest of the world is in the near future as a result.

Public education -forced public education in reality- is the 10th plank of the Communist Manifesto.

That’s why we have difficulty establishing and maintaining private schools and extreme opposition to voucher systems that help parents pay for their children’s education using private schools.

The purpose of public schools is not education, it is political indoctrination.

DC Sunsets

@Anon, ditto.

Left or Right, collectivism has been on a roll for 150 years.
Collectivism’s many forms (communism, social democracy, national socialism, corporatism) all look the same to me: BAD.

Hoppe has nailed it for a long time. All roads lead to either aristocracy or flavor-of-the-month-collectivism. A truly libertarian world is no less Utopian than Thomas More described in his book 500 years ago.

People as individuals can be decent. People in large groups always suck.

TPC, you’re making an assumption here, one that assumes alternatives to it are impossible.

I’m not willing to bet on that.

Now, here is an interesting article about teachers in Finnland:

In german, of course. If you can read it, do it – I was AMAZED!

@dc, I’d sign my kid up in a heartbeat. You would find her sweet and compliant, while being opinionated and well-read with a strong distrust for what passes for modern science, which if you really dig into, is anything but scientific.

There are great teachers whom have to shut their mouths, eat their feelings (hence large numbers on anxiety and depression meds) and carry on. Thank God for them, but let us be real, their silence only lends legitimacy to the evil that exists.

Some people are part of the evil, some cannot stomach the evil and some disagree but profit from it anyway. So it goes and I can’t condemn anyone from trying to help kids while depending on the mathematically impossible benefits of the job. As for me, I just can’t stomach it. The unionist mindset alone is enough to make me want to gouge out my eyeballs in frustration and horror at what we have become. Over the years I have refused to use my God-given people skills, sales skills, to steal or even cheat people. A few times I was offered major money to do things I consider wrong and hurtful to the individual (Lifestyle Lift and the home buyers clubs for two, I would have made a bloody fortune). Though not complete scams, they were surely methods of way fleecing the easily duped that are led by their basest instincts, insecurities, fears and wants.

Life is one moral dilemma after the other. The choices only seem to become more futile, or outright evil, evil light is still evil.

As for Finland, it is interesting, less time in school, more time being a kid, less testing and more help produces smarter humans, who’d thunk it? Oh yeah, every good parent ever.

I would love to see the chart of the ADMINISTRATORS and Union Leaders comparison, that is where our money goes, I would also love to know how long they work vs how long they are paid to be non-productive, all would be most telling as to why our money seems to be pissed away at ever increasing rates.

The last thing our politicians, capitalist uber rich, and union leaders want is a bunch of thinking, self-motivated, questioning humans. Which is why they will NEVER come up with a plan that will change the reality. It would be against their own best interests and show me many humans that ever choose that.

They want worker bees and consumers whom will either be too busy trying to make a living, or too dumbed down to use their free time wisely, because this is the mental prison that keeps the powers that be living the high life of the elite and uber elite.

And, it is for the children. Or whales, or Icebergs, something like that. Always is. NEVER works. And sadly, doesn’t seem to matter.

Yet. So it goes…

I must be dense today, I’m not quite sure what to make of this comment.

Alternatives….to ethnic homogeneity? Fins are pretty homogeneous ethnically. We are not. We are also not likely to ever be, not only due to our massive geographical size, but our policy on immigration, as well as a fairly large existing population of minorities.

Until the religion of Social Justic is confronted and defeated there will be no change.

This is what these dumb bell Sean Hannity types can’t get through their dumb skull. Any free market system invariably leads to segregation. The amplitudes of Charles Murrys the Bell Curve will just be more pronounced.

Meaning Whites and Asians will be pushed from the 8th grade to the 11th. And Negros will go from the 11th to the 8th.

It will be so apparent that certain races will fall so far behind as other races are unshackled and not held back. That simply can not happen in a persons life. The myth must continue at least to the age of 18. Where a Richard Fynman graduates at the same age of Al Sharpton.

Visitor,

That article makes it seem like it is almost as hard to become a teacher there as it is to get into med school here.

And the pay is not that great either.

P.M.Lawrence

… no diversity in Finland …

Huh? It’s one of the many countries with two or more significant ethnic groups with different languages and cultures, in this case the Finns and the Swedes. Not too many generations ago, Germans and Russians were important minorities, too.
