The Original … by far.

The other guy sounds “nasal-y”.

McLean’s written lyrics and notes just sold for $1.2 million. The king was Elvis, and the court jester was Bob Dylan. It has been a controversial song for decades.

For that, McClean wins hands down. And Don admitted long ago, while NEVER admitting to any specific interpretation of his lyrics, that the song would keep him wealthy for the rest of his life. Smart guy. He was right.

Another SSS brilliant interpretation that is sure to garner 100 thumbs-up.

I’ve not listened to Mayers version. I love the original, that being said, John Mayer is amazing. Mayer has nothing to prove, he’s top shelf, I’m sure he loves the song and wanted to put his own spin on it. Hell, maybe he’s attempting to reach you brain fuckingdead Boomers. Ya know me an Admin are 13er’s. We really despise you bastards, you guys fucked the game so bad your replacements cannot overcome your errors. What the fuck says you!

McLean, no contest. Mayer sounds like most of the millenial artists, trying to copy greatest but just not getting there. To me the sound is like a copy of a copy of a copy looks.

Mason Lee DIxon of 79WAKY recorded his “explanation version” of American Pie and it was broadcast on WAKY in 1971. Sorry for the quality but it’s recorded off AM Radio.

Don McLean. He wrote it. Also, John Mayer is a fag.

All right I listened to Mayers Version and as I said, Mayer is just paying homage to a great song. Watch his Guitar playing skills they are awesome! John Mayer is Absofuckinglutely top shelf.

I think that John Mayer was technically proficient, but lacked the soul and feel of Don McLean – Mayer has very tasteful fills – but doesn’t have the soul in his singing as Don does – also – Letterman’s band is somewhat rote with the interpretation – unlike McLean’s band which is really into it – like the lead guitar fills and the piano embellishments – just my humble opinion, but I like the original
