The Decline of Christian America

Guest Post by Patrick J. Buchanan

“This is a Christian nation,” said the Supreme Court in 1892.

“America was born a Christian nation,” echoed Woodrow Wilson. Harry Truman affirmed it: “This is a Christian nation.”

But in 2009, Barack Hussein Obama begged to differ: “We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation.”

Comes now a Pew Research Center survey that reveals the United States is de-Christianizing at an accelerated rate.

Whereas 86 percent of Americans in 1990 identified as Christians, by 2007, that was down to 78 percent. Today only 7 in 10 say they are Christians. But the percentage of those describing themselves as atheists, agnostics or nonbelievers has risen to 23. That exceeds the Catholic population and is only slightly below evangelicals.

Those in the mainline Protestant churches — Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalians — have plummeted from 50 percent of the U.S. population in 1958 to 14 percent today. By accommodating the social revolution of the 1960s to stay relevant, mainline churches appear to have made themselves irrelevant to America’s young.

The decline in Christian identity is greatest among the young. While 85 percent of Americans born before 1945 still call themselves Christians, only 57 percent of those born after 1980 do.

If we want to see our future, we should probably look to Europe, where Catholic Ireland just voted in a landslide to legalize same-sex marriage and where cathedrals and churches are being turned into tourist attractions and museums and even bars and restaurants.

What are the causes of a de-Christianized America?

High among them is the Supreme Court, which, since the Earl Warren era began, purged Christianity from all public schools and the public square — and has been met with a puzzling lack of resistance from Middle America to the secularist revolution being imposed upon it.

Second, an anti-Christian elite captured the cultural heights — the arts, elite universities, popular culture, the media — and began, through movies, books and magazines, an assault on Christian beliefs and morality.

Third was the social revolution of the 1960s, which began with the arrival of the baby boomers on campus in 1964. Five years on, Woodstock Nation was wallowing in the mud, listening to Country Joe & the Fish.

The counterculture of the ’60s would be used as a foil to build 49-state landslides for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, but then the ’60s views and values were embraced by the elites and came to dominate the culture in the time of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Given his baggage, “Slick Willy” of Yoknapatawpha County would have been a comic figure in the 1950s. Today he is the Democratic Party’s beau ideal of a statesman.

Many churches came out to meet the cultural revolution halfway. The results were irrelevance and scandal — too many Elmer Gantrys in televangelist pulpits and too many predators in priestly cassocks.

What are the consequences of a de-Christianized America and West? Si monumentum requiris, circumspice. (If you would seek its monuments, look around you.)

Half of marriages end in divorce. Fewer children are being born, and of these, over 40 percent are out of wedlock. Record drug use rates and dropout rates and soaring crime rates that have declined only because we have an incarceration rate that rivals South Africa’s.

Despite astonishing advances in medicine, we have far more and far more varied and deadly STDs.

As Christianity dies, individualism, materialism and hedonism replace it. “Selfies” could be the name for the generation for whom Easter Sunday long ago took a back seat to Super Bowl Sunday. More than a million abortions a year, assisted suicide and euthanasia are seen as the milestones of social progress in the new America.

“Panem et circenses,” bread and circuses, were what the late Roman Empire was all about. With us, it is sex, drugs and rock, with variations on all three.

Historically, as the faith dies, the culture and civilization to which it gave birth die, and then the people die. And a new tribe with its own gods comes to occupy the emptying land.

On the old and new continents, it is the native-born of European ancestry who are de-Christianizing, aging and dying. And the nations they created are the ones depopulating.

To occupy Rome, the barbarians came from the east and north. To occupy the West, they are coming from the south. And like the Romans of the fourth century, we seem paralyzed and powerless to stop them.

Christianity was the founding faith of the West. That faith and the moral code and culture it produced once united this disparate and diverse nation and civilization.

As Christianity fades away and the moral code and culture it generated recede into irrelevance, what will hold us together?

Economically, we are dependent on foreigners for the necessities of our national life. Our politics are poisonous. Our racial divisions, once ameliorated by shared belief in the same God and Bible, are rawer than they were in the 1950s.

As for equality, diversity and global democracy, who will march and die for that?

Historian Arnold Toynbee said it well: “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.”

If truth were known, there probably never were more than 20% Christians in USA. The rest just gave it lip service. Phoniness destroyed American belief in Christianity. Some of us older people practice our faith on a personal level and the young have seen the lies and reject Christianity altogether. I’ll bet Stucky could expound on this more fully.

” … there probably never were more than 20% Christians in USA …… I’ll bet Stucky could expound on this more fully.” ————- overthecliff

I’ll give a brief opinion. I don’t want to be sucked into this post …. I’m trying to finish my 1812 article, and I have shit to do otherwise.

Percentages don’t matter.

Buchanan asks —- “What are the causes of a de-Christianized America?”

He than answers —- ” … Supreme Court …. purged Christianity from all public schools and the public square …. anti-Christian elite …. the social revolution of the 1960s ….”

OK, these may be contributing factors. That being said, he’s full of shit. He is making excuses. He is shifting blame. “Wah! Wah! Wah! I want to be a good Christian but the Supreme Court won’t let me!! WAAAAHHHH!”. Poppycock!!

Was there there a Supreme Court in 1AD? Did not Rome rule with an iron fist, and decide which gods would be worshiped, or tolerated? Was not the culture in 33AD totally against Christian principles? Were not the few Christians available persecuted endlessly? Tortured? Thrown in the lion’s den? Crucified along the highways en mass? Reviled and scorned?

Yet … even in Paul’s day, he says this tiny band of Christians turned Rome upside down … NOT because of assistance from the State, but IN SPITE of it! And in no time at all the entire Roman Empire was converted. So, why are today’s American Christians whining so much? Why can’t they accomplish with the first century Christians did?

If American Christians want to know why Christianity is in decline in America all they have to do is ….. LOOK IN THE MIRROR, and stop blaming every other convenient tool. It’s on YOU, baby!!

If Christianity was a criminal offense … there wouldn’t be enough evidence to convict 95% of today’s Christians. God’s people are supposed to be a “called out” people; separate, different, consecrated to the Lord. But, there isn’t a lickspittle difference between the average Christian and non-Christian.

The Borg have assimilated Christianity. We are them. They are us. Neither makes a difference anymore. So, stop blaming the Supreme Court.

As this nation turns away from its founding principles (Christianity ) it turns toward (secularism)a godless form of idolatry. In other words it turns to evil. This is a type of God’s wrath. The wrath of Abandonment. God removes his restraining grace allowing the nation to Reap the bitter fruit of its idolatry. This is just the beginning of Woe.God will allow us to sink farther into our own depravity until we have destroyed ourselves. For those who say they don’t believe in God’s wrath you should look at our society and then read Romans 1:18-32.This explains the wrath of Abandonment better then any where else in the bible. We are in God’s wrath right now these bible verses shows you what it looks like.

Buchanan posts another right on article. This country is so screwed. Whether you want to believe or not is your own choice, but lets face facts- the nonbelievers are typically amoral lib dbags promoting gay marriage and victims rights and the like and you can see what has happened. All you have to do is look at the NY Times front page each day to see what their agenda is.

Oddly, I think Wayne Dyer has the best advice for Christians:

“Don’t be Christian, be Christ-like.”

I used to think people didn’t need religion.
Then I realized people ALWAYS have a religion, and that today’s dominant one is statism (the worship of power, organized by collective political activity.)
I then realized that very few people can figure out how to live, all by reason alone. Most people are slaves, prefer slavery to freedom and will create a master even if one does not materialize to enslave them from without.

Thus, people need a religion to provide goals for behavior (which they will surely fall short of, but shooting without a designated target is bad for everyone.) Today’s statism sprouts from an evil seed, that people are like interchangeable insects and that the good of the hive is found in the average good of the hive’s members. The means to this is the destruction of private property, and this comes with all sorts of labels but it’s all the same.

People vote as a proxy for warfare; on offense, they vote to steal from their neighbors. On defense, they vote to erect walls against all comers, even those with a better claim (on customers, for example.)

Thus, today we have a religion that celebrates stylized, universal, every man against every man warfare.

Christianity was preferable.

Religion will undergo a major renaissance in the coming difficulties.

I expect it to be (in the USA) Christianity; whether it is traditional Catholicism or some sort of 2nd wave Lutheran revolt (or Choice C) is anyone’s guess.

“Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilised – the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals.” – Mahatma Gandhi.

That quote about “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians” is cluttering up the internet. Funny how people who quote Gandhi on that may not like some of his other quotes (above). Gandhi may not have liked Christians, but compared to who else? Mohammedans? Even the Buddhists of Burma are understandably intolerant of their Rohingya. The atheists weren’t exactly a bundle of fun in the 20th century. The Christian English colonized much of the world with a relatively benevolent hand. The number of people needed to “rule” India was miniscule. In Nigeria, the Brits basically told them emirs “you lot have made a right mess of the place. Would you like us to take over for a while?” They gave their subjects (in some cases) written language, a common language, European technology, rule of law including property rights, land surveys, etc. and when the locals wanted independence, the Brits gave it to them with nary a fight. They was no “Battle of Lagos” where the Brits were defeated. They took their gin & tonic and went home, leaving the locals to the internecine strife and religious disputes that made the white man’s rule so attractive when first offered. Colonial rule may have had its indignities, but it beat being beheaded by Boko Haram. “I do not like your Christians”. Fuck that and fuck Gandhi. I’ll not take any advice from a guy who drank his own piss.

WTF is the matter with people saying America is a “Christian” nation. I beg to differ. Didn’t the pilgrims escape England due to religious oppression? America was designed to be religion-neutral, that’s what the separation of church and state is all about. I sure as hell don’t need Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell-ites or any of the other Bible-thumpers telling me how to live my fucking life!

Sticky

With all due respect, I think it is a bit of a stretch to compare the church in the USA, or any other western nation, with the church in Rome. The problem in Rome was that the Christians insisted on worshipping Jesus instead of the emperor. Thus they were harassed in all the creative ways that you shared. They were definitely a danger to the status quo with their newfangled notions of right living.

Christians in America have never been subject to state persecution because of who they choose to worship. Thus they have never had to submit to the tortures you describe, and so yes, they may appear to be complacent. In fact, I would say complacency is the biggest challenge to the church. Like everybody else, the church still is not in enough pain to become truly radicalized.

The pressure is slowly building on the church, though. I fully expect a ruling or an executive order that will require churches to perform gay marriage ceremonies if they wish to keep their tax-exempt status. Next it will be regulations about what is said from the pulpit, and after that what is taught in Sunday School. Churches will have to pay taxes on their income, and so on. I can’t imagine where it will go from there, but if the trends continue, persecution of individual believers will begin in earnest. Perhaps they will be judged mentally incompetent, and thus the state will take their kids. I don’t even want to entertain that thought, but the spirit of delusion that is falling on our leaders is something those of you who pray might want to add to your list. It is truly frightening I think.

Christians do a lot of good in the name of Christ, but you have a hard time finding out about it, don’t you? Poor old Tim Tebow, that crazy Christian and lousy football player – his foundation just opened a children’s hospital in the Phillipines – is a good example. The media, liberal and secular to a fault, is not interested in reporting it to you. They are too busy picking on pizza restaurant owners minding their own business until a certain reporter walked in the door and all he’ll broke loose.

Anyway, the world system is in complete opposition to the church, as Jesus promised. As long as they hate us, we’re still doing something right.

You had it right when you said the pilgrims came here to escape oppression for their beliefs. Yet your attitude is what defeated the new Christianity in America. If America were to keep to the Pilgrim’s ideals, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell would command more respect than Al Sharpton and Jesse.

The camp I attended as a wee lad was founded in 1928. The brochure that year dictated that you must be Christian to attend. How evil and bigoted!

Now, you are admitted if you are a Puerto Rican Jewish transgendered midget. Progress!

I do agree with you.

I’m just sick and tired of the whining sniveling fairies complaining “Boo Hoo!! Christianity is in decline in America!!” ….. as if ANYONE IN THIS COUNTRY CAN STOP YOU FROM LIVING A CHRIST LIKE LIFE!!!

I say a good Persecution is exactly what’s needed. Nothing like “choose the State or die” to separate the wheat from the chaff!!

Overthecliff,, I would disagree with you a little. I would say the biggest problems christians face here is the pampered ignorance of the secular left. So quick to argue evolution, yet so blissfully unaware that in a survival of the fittest situation, they’d have been tossed off a roof a long time ago. Like vaccine herd riders who don’t understand the devastation of polio or smallpox, they have no clue about how fortunate they are to live amongst a majority of tolerant christians. So they seek to destroy what they are too stupid to understand.

If things get tough in the future, which seems inevitable to me, the left will simply die off. Such is nature. The existence of liberalism is merely a modern version of idle hands are the devils workshop. In a tough situation, who would you rather have in the foxhole, john wayne, or lena dunham? Reagan or obama?

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims]; and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.” – Treaty of Tripoli, 1797, written by founding father, president, and princinple Declaration of Independence author John Adams, and approved unanimously by the US Senate.

Harmony? Thats right the gov is not the people, so Yeah! but , heres a movie script to ” LOGANS RUN ”
May we stay here?
..We’d like to rest awhile

Of course. This belongs to the people.
.-What belongs to the people?
-Certainly does. All of it.
What people?
All of them. It’s marked
here on the wall someplace
All the people, all the time.
…shall not….
I’ll be right back………..
We are going on, aren’t we?
There’s nothing to go on to.
There’s Sanctuary
There is
You want there to be one, but–
There has to be!
.I know it exists.
-It has to.
-No, it does not. Not really.
Just so many people want it to exist,
so many people who don’t want to die…
…they want it so much that a place
called Sanctuary becomes real.
But it doesn’t exist. It never existed
Just the hope
You’re wrong!
It has to be! It has to be!
