Muck’s Minute # 11

Is Money REALLY the Root of all Evil??

There was an opinion once stated on TBP about “Money being the root of all evil.” Here are a few musings on the matter.

Actually, money is a very useful invention and lies at the base of our has rapidly grown and rapidly shrinking prosperity.

The bad part of “money” is the human tendency to ruin it and totally foul it by misusing it.

We are screwing up in so many and varied ways from printing fiat money, buying Treasury Debt and spending it first (that’s the 1st Rule of Government – spend fiat first to get the most out of it!) to polluting any and everything we touch with oil, waste heat products, feces, fertilizer and plastic crap to using up antique aquifer water (a few hundred million years old) so fast that within the lifetimes of our great grand children those farmers’ wells in the corn and wheat belts will be dry, dry, dry. Maybe, whatever the “money” is then will be sufficient to pipe in water from Canada. Or perhaps things will be warm enough by then to do the farming in Canada, who knows..

The human animal is just a remarkably shrewd, sadly not very smart, upright ape with very selfish tendencies.

Of course, there are exceptions to the “not so smart” part but, in all, as a race, our IQ’s have been dropping for 10,000 years.

This produces an entire world wide population of beings who, in general, only think of today – maybe tonight as well – especially if sex is involved — but absolutely no farther.

The short term, instant gratification mode is glaringly present in all aspects of human behavior from shoplifting to politics to excessive extraction of natural resources to walking into traffic while sending a text message to an equally stupid recipient.

Tweet or die! Tweet and Die! Permanent entertainment or disaster! What ever can a person do by himself without constant entertainment (or what passes for it these days).

That’s why “kick the can” is universally preferred to really fixing anything when it’s gone wrong.

Paint over it, move it over, rearrange the chairs, weld that broken strut (poorly), just fill it with putty and so on and so on.

But “money” is not the cause of all this present and coming agony. We are the cause of it. Now why is that?

Post WWII  elections should have plainly written in the sky in all CAPS for everyone to see that can read or gives a crap to look up from their video game is that some 200 years ago a thrifty Scottish fellow by the name of Alexander Fraser Tytler, had a startling insight into the nature of short term human thinking, so well proved out today.

Right now, in fact.. It goes as follows:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by anarchy, slowly moving to dictatorship, then a monarchy.”

Thence, some years later 100-500 years later, a Democracy again.

I’m not so sure about the “monarchy” conclusion reached at the end – but a dictatorship or fascist form of government is obviously the most likely as civil order finally implodes when the Free Shit stops — as it mathematically must at some point when lack of resources, technology and productivity fail to keep us even with the “Take from the productive and give to the non-productive” proclivity that exists in most reaches of the world today – especially in the USA and the EU and rapidly expanding into Eurasia and already embedded firmly in South America.

Another fellow – a bit later in time – Alexis de Tocqueville by name, had a slightly different view of corruption via political pollution of money:

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the publics’ money”.

And then we have Will Rodgers who summed it all up, “A fool and his money are soon elected.”

Ending with Margaret Thatcher, ”The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money [to spend].”

Put them all together and you have been provided sufficient insight into the simple fact that money is not the root of all evil but that man is; root, trunk and branch; through his actions, the functions of money are distorted and once distortion (i.e. fiat inflation of any ilk) has gained a foothold, eventual debasement and collapse of the fiat money are inevitable. “Money” is nothing. “Money” is a generally excepted medium of exchange enabling human beings to specialize in doing what they do best, producing what they do best and trading it back and forth to achieve what is known as an “economy”.

Please remember: unbacked credit and money created out of thin air are exactly the same thing and the collapse of the debt it “finances” which indeed will happen simply when the confidence of those people, wherever and whomever they are, who accept the fiat money/credit in exchange for real property, goods and services fails and people refuse to buy into the Ponzi Scheme anymore..

(Please stop here and research “Ponzi” for a full understanding of what I’m talking about.)

When the people and producers, in their inimitable fashion, lose confidence in the fiat credit/money to purchase real goods and services in an orderly fashion, the immediate response is to try and find something else to use for money – in a black market..

Gresham’s Law (well proven back to the times of barter) states, “Bad money drives out good money.” and makes the good money vanish from view into the black market where some great bargains can be had.

But you must be careful the Government doesn’t catch you because by then, the Government has closed banks, installed draconian currency controls, confiscatory taxes and other robber baron methods to fleece businesses, the sheeple and outlaw anything but their own fiat garbage as a medium of exchange!.. You take their worthless money at the point of a gun or be mightily punished for not doing so. Be advised that this is the true path into penury and has happened throughout history time and time again. And is happening as I write this: NOW: J.P. Morgan Chase will no longer accept cash in deposit to a third party account!!! Honest.. Go try it. (Current as of July 10, 2015).

History is exceptionally cruel in this respect in that when debasement of money, fiat and unbacked “fantasy credit” is issued that will never be repaid begins to happen, there is no historical incidence or record of it ever ending except in disaster. NEVER.

It always collapses just like any other Ponzi scheme, even when done on a worldwide multinational basis as is being done today.

We are watching the twisting and turning of Central Banks and Governments world wide trying frantically to get out of debt by going deeper into debt, papering over default by selling themselves bonds they printed themselves and all other varieties of kinky fiscal idiocy that will eventually blow away in the wind, leaving all concerned dead and dying at the end of the rope they strung for themselves from which to hang.

I must admit that as I write this, the Greek Government is in final negotiations (HONEST!) with the EU, Germany and the IMF so that the EU/IMF will release A FEW Billion Euros to Greece so Greece can use the money to make a payment on an upcoming loan payment to the EU and IMF.. Laugh my ass off. Who the holy hell to they think they are fooling?

This fiscal exercise in futility is then followed by a general lowering of living standards, a die off of significant proportions and, in a burst of glory, the fabled Man on The White Horse barges in (with his loyal troops) to the “rescue” and we all find ourselves living under martial law at a much, much lower living standard and with a Military fascist promising to liberate us from our own folly. Same old, same old. This has played out time after time down the tortuous trail of history and our situation will be no different this time either.

The bitch is in the timing. My comment on a thread elsewhere about it being a long and agonizing scream of misery followed by a “Bang” applies.

In the l-o-n-g run, if anyone is interested in it, we are totally screwed as a race – humanity that is, not some subset of it – and money has nothing to do with it. We, however, are smarter than the dinosaurs and other “less intelligent” species that have vanished before us through accident, cosmic indifference or climate change. We are currently engineering our own extinction ourselves which will have the exact same effect as enjoyed by all those species preceding us to extinction. We, in our particularly twisted ways, are hurrying other lesser species to extinction every day as we continue to rape and pillage various environments for greater “economic” glory.

Think about this: 98% of all documented species that ever dwelled on the planet are now extinct. What makes anyone think we’re “too special” to trot right along after the other 98%, especially since we are destroying our own ecosystem?

There isn’t a chance in Hell that the human race, in all its’ glory, varied self-centered goals, wants and perceived “needs” will be willing as a world wide group to agree on anything, much less coordinated action to prevent or mitigate what is roaring down the pike toward us all;  which is a planet 2-6 degrees Celsius hotter than today with all the misery that will cause from draughts, extreme hurricanes, violent monsoons and a huge rise in ocean levels that will flood a billion people from their homes and cities.

But that’s day after tomorrow and of no interest to the teeming masses of sheeple that cannot even understand it, much less bring any pressure on ruling bodies to arrest the trend..

But “money” is not to be blamed for any of it.

Pile on top of that pretty picture is one of us trying to handle it as it comes using Medieval social organizations, barter and religious pogroms from every side. Throw in a few hundred nukes to cook it all down and that’s our future – medium term.

Our own distortion, misuse AND stupid use of so many things in Nature, both the human sort and that belonging to Mother’s Nature is to blame for every bit of it.

As Pogo said, “We have found the enemy and he is us!”.

Very nice piece, Muck. Money itself is absolutely crucial…it is the very lifeblood of society. The distortion of money by a handful of psychopaths and egomaniacs is the problem…as is the apathy of the masses. If people really understood what money IS and what it IS NOT, it would be much harder for for our rulers to buy and sell us.

Agree with the parts about money and humans being short sighted. A 2-6 degree Celsius increase in temps, a “huge rise in ocean levels” and a billion people being flooded out of their homes? Nah. Not going to happen. Not the ocean rise anyway. A couple of degrees might be net positive for humanity. There’s a lot of empty in Russia and Canada.

Thanks Muck.

One of my most closely held beliefs is that humans are becoming increasingly more stupid, and it is not going to end well.

100,000 years ago, the stupid got eaten by lions, or fell off cliffs, or whatever.

Today, the stupid breed like rabbits, and the governments of the world protect them at every turn. Too stupid to be able to feed yourself – here is a snap card! Too stupid to not be able to work safely – here is a new law forcing the employer to stop whatever action the government deems dangerous to you!

The stupid are no longer dying out and not procreating, but rather are breeding in large numbers world-wide. The gene pool is going to get increasingly shallow. And very, very wide. Only minnows will exist in it, in the end, the way it is going.

The love of money is the root of all evil. I Timothy 6 10. Rationally I cannot see how that applies to cases like Jefery Dahmer. I believe it.

Money is the love of ALL KINDS OF EVIL is the correct translation. Thus is the reason God gave us the tenth commandment .Thou shalt not covet .The backside of the commandment is to be content with the material goods you do have. This is one of the reasons Marxist , socialist , progressives and community organizers hate the tenth commandment. It commands people not to covet other people’s property. In other words , not to steal from your neighbors.

Lipoh , could it be that people are not getting more stupid but that you are a grumpy old man who is more easily irritated these days.Tell the truth big chief.

Stucky

The root of “ALL” evil?

I don’t think so. Murder, for example, has several causes. Money is just one of them. Then you have jealousy, anger, and other reasons including just-for-the-hell-of-it (as in serial killers).

And OTC is correct .. the original quote talks about the LOVE of money.

SSS

Gold and silver.

Might be a bit awkward, but it knocks the living shit out of society’s strap-hangers.

bb

Damn ,I got that ass backward….. here is the right translation .. The Love of money is the root of all kinds of EVIL. It is the love of money .

llpoh, I fully agree.

The trouble is that most stupid people are too stupid to even realize how fucking stupid they really are.

There was no credit or debit in the Garden of Eden.

Money is the “root” of all evil , by which is meant the choking vine (i.e. banksterism) which suffocates all things, great and good, doth sprout.

A lot of governments have yet to realize that they lost their national sovereignty a long time ago because they have allowed their debt to pile up. They now need the goodwill of the financial markets.Only when the euro area countries are willing to share sovereignty at the European level will they gain sovereignty.

My 2 cents worth, which you can probably find tossed onto the ground in any park or by any vending machine that takes only coins of higher value, so it won’t cost you anything.

The Book says “the love of money” is the root of all evil and while I personally expand it to mean that the love of money includes the love of the power and control having great wealth affords people, I agree that there are some evils which just “exist” and are not the result of the greed seemingly referred to in 1 Timothy.

I do NOT want to come across as a Bible-Thumping Holy Roller, because I am not closed-minded by a long shot. However, I am a Believer and, as such, have to assume that if the Book says the Love of Money is the Root of all evil, therefore there is a logical answer to the seeming paradox presented by the statement. That is called Faith and while I’m not blind or deaf to other explanations (and I also agree with Pogo that we are the enemy in most cases), I am allowed to have Faith until it is officially banned.

Stucky

Muck

Since you’re saying that morals/religion are responsible for mankind’s loss of “general intelligence and thinking capabilities, then can I assume you would agree with this statement; “Faith is the root of all evil.”?

@MA

Thumbs up for a well stated thought provoking minute. Am in the middle of one of the creepiest of life’s lessons…

My father has died, my oldest sister manipulated his Alzheimers ridden brain to cut me out, which I finally said “no problem” to because I never counted on any money, just a few photos and mementos. But now, she has consulted a lawyer about how to sue me for things he’d already given me.

A frivolous lawsuit, sure. Expense and headache I don’t need. Yes.

Why not just give the things to her? Because, it is never going to end if I do. She wants handwritten letters, notes, even my voice recordings I made during some of our conversations years ago before he was ill.

So, forgive me if I’m not playing very well… have consulted my lawyer who assures me it is ridiculous beyond belief. Yet, a second letter from the lawyer (who is 80 something himself) came two days ago demanding that if I don’t give the items back, then I am to sign an affidavit saying I don’t have them.

I just want to get my sod today and put in our yard. The big mountain of dirt has been moved from in front of my log home and I want to have a yard. I don’t have time to go into my storage barn and try to find things my father sent to me over the last 30 years I’ve lived out of state, even if I wanted to.

So, in spite of having been respected by everyone I’ve ever met (except my ex-husband, but there are special categories for those), I’m under attack from someone who wants my stuff.

I’m 53 years old, by the way and she is 61. We are not children. She’s just mad because I can write and she can’t. Dad had some writing talent… that is what she wants. She wants my DNA.

Maggie
Maggie

@Stucky… drat it to heck! (I always love that term) you are way ahead of me.

Maggie

And, if they come up with a way to filter DNA, she can have that… but that no-talent bitch will never be able to write.

Stucky

While the love of money being the root of all evil is in the Bible … it was written by PAUL … whose “theology”, as I’ve stated before, is often at odds with the other Apostles, and even Jesus.

Also, if you think about it, it’s TERRIBLE theology!! SIN is the root of all evil … not a very specific type of sin.

WWJS (What Would Jesus Say) if we slightly change the question to “what is the greatest sin?”

1. Money might be the answer. He has much against the rich, how hard it is for them to get into heaven, that one can never serve two masters, and a few parables with a negative prognosis for the rich. However, he doesn’t condemn all rich people … rich women were a significant source of funds for his ministry … and his heart was broken (not angry) that the Rich Young Ruler walked away. So, no, I don’t think he would agree with Paul.

2. I would place HYPOCRISY at the top of the list. Jesus saved his MOST SCATHING remarks in Scripture for hypocrites .. calling them snakes, vipers, white washed tombs, etc. A case can be made that no sin has a greater negative impact on the cause of Christ than Christian hypocrites.

3. UNBELIEF is another good candidate. Unbelief is an insult to God. There are about 8 instances where Jesus rebukes his disciples …. and in EVERY case it is because of their unbelief. Only twice do we read that Jesus was “amazed” …. in one case it was because of FAITH, and in the other because of UNBELIEF.

4. INDIFFERENCE TO HUMAN NEED. So very many stories and parables in the Gospels are related to this idea. The rich man went to hell because he did not care for his brother Lazarus. The priest and the Levite in the parable of the good Samaritan, were exposed as hypocrites by Jesus because they did not show compassion on their fallen brother. Jesus despised those who would stone a woman caught in adultery … when love and compassion was the better solution. I could go on and on showing that indifference REALLY pissed off Jesus.

5.Lastly, Jesus actually tells us what the greatest sin is! A sin for which there is NO forgiveness; “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” What that sin actually means we’ll leave for another day. Just be aware that according to Jesus it is a FAR greater sin than loving money.

Maggie
Maggie

@Stucky… good points. Am still waist deep in control freak greed-related troubles, but will certainly take your comments into consideration.

Here I was trying to do a bit of reading for my own sanity and TBP has brought me back into the stress of trying to make sense of the unfathomable.

Think I’ll go put down sod.

Stucky

Maggie

I FEEL your pain. I’m going through something a little different with my parents …. something INFURIATING.

My dad’s accident …. he got a letter from the insurance company a couple days ago. A brief letter basically stating that it APPEARS that dad might need to hire a lawyer …. because the property damage (to the two houses) MAY exceed his insured coverage of …. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS!!

WTF???????????

House #1 suffered damage to; three sections of PLASTIC fencing, a glass patio set, a tree, some bushes, and tire marks on the grass. We guessed around $2-$3 thousand dollars tops.

House #2 was hit AFTER dad plowed through House #1’s tree, yard, and fences … so his speed was significantly reduced …. and he only hit the CORNER of the house. I saw it. Several panels of siding need to be replaced, a gutter and drain spout, and maybe some concrete work. We guessed $5k tops.

> $100k ??? WTF? Need to take care of that today/tomorrow. Is someone trying to FUCK OVER my parents? Or, is it just some terrible mistake? I surely hope it is the latter.

m111ark

Got as far as ponzi, couldn’t take it anymore… so if you’ve redeemed yourself further on, well, you can disregard this.

Money is not simply a medium of exchange, it is also a store of value, without which it will eventually fail as a medium of exchange.

Also, the only money is paper and coins. So at any time you can determine how much money you have by pulling out your wallet and counting it(EVERYTHING else is debt – which if it were paid off would simply disappear). You’all call that fiat… which it is and that’s not a bad thing. Every sovereign nation SHOULD print it’s own money and SPEND it; never, ever borrow it’s own money… whoever thought of that method of injecting money into the economy must have been a conniving, thieving oligarch.

What we have(are burdened with) is a debt-money monetary system where the banks were authorized to print debt, call it money, and collect interest to boot. That kind of system is doomed to failure as ours did in 2008… before the next batch of suckers were ready to assume the mantle of debt-serf. So everything since has but one purpose – delay the inevitable until the Eastern war machine is ready to credibly take on the West.

Should be ready in a few years…

Stucky,

You would be better off reaching an agreement with the people involved before getting any parasite insurance company to settle the matter.

@Stucky… WTF is right! Sounds like people have decided to remodel their homes compliments of your father’s accident.

Insurance companies are really crooked. When a friend lost her husband to a drunk driver, State Farm refused to pay the $300K accidental death and dismemberment she and husband carried on their full coverage policy BECAUSE the truck that the drunk driver was driving without a license (therefore, without permission officially) was also insured by State Farm and carried only liability insurance., therefore they claimed they were only liable for the $25K mandated by law.

A lawyer was hired and he got the $300K… and walked away with $150K of it.

You’re doing the right thing, but if push comes to shove… Kill the bitch! Bueno, at least metaphorically. As an only child, I have no experience with this sort of sibling rivalry, but a wicked third wife of my father gave me a chance to deal with this sort of scum. Happily, she died first!

Plant that sod, keep up the good work and don’t let the &%$% get you down!

@Stucky: I fear it’s the former. Best of luck and keep on fighting!

Love of money is indeed evil, as are those who have corrupted it. I’m a geezer, but I’m trying to steel myself for a fight, because that fight is coming, no escaping it, not even in my remote corner of the world.

Stucky…you’re always looking for God’s miracles. Got another one since we are talking DNA etc.

Moat of my life I’ve really dis-liked my father. Why because he’s completely devoid of reason and the concept that he needs to keep his dick in his pants. He’s ruined more families than I know for just that reason. Plus he’s blown so many opportunities to be wealthy because of his own idiotic reasons. I put up with him because of the commandment to ” Honor They Father And Mother “…I do just the bare minimum.

So Stuck here’s the miracle…I’m nothing like my dad….180 degrees opposite . I always asked God…how the hell did I manage to get his DNA. I’d ask God I wish I never had it. Well a few years ago my prayer was answered…I found out while going through my divorce that….he wasn’t my dad…someone else was…YESSSSSSSSS ! So Stuck..there’s another miracle for you.

The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. So is GREED. When you’ve been blessed with an abundance of wealth I think you should share it with those who need a hand up ( not through the force of goobernment ).

You haven’t read Ayn Rand’s character, Francisco d”Anconia in “Atlas Shrugged.” He went on for 5 pages on the question:

“So you think money is the root of all evil? Have you ever asked what is the tool of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is that what you consider evil?”

“To trade by means of money is the code of the men of good will. Money rests on the axiom that every man is the owner of his mind and his effort.”

“Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent but by compulsion, when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing, when you see that money is flowing to those who get richer by graft and by pull rather than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them but protect them against you, when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice, you may know that your society is doomed.”

Sound familiar? Ayn Rand was absolutely prescient!

Money/Power. It’s about what people are willing to do to get it.And once they have it,What do they do with it. And there never seems to be a point where people have enough. How many millions is enough. From what i have seen there is no limit for the psychopaths in charge. It’s what is going to destroy the country as we know it. I find myself in the unexpected position being bored with doom porn. I can barely work up a mild outrage over most of what I read these days. Oddly enough, I’m not despondent about it either. I suppose I’ve reached the “acceptance” stage because I just accept it in the same way I accept that rain is going to spoil my outdoor plans now and then. Despite any preps I may be making, at the end of the day I’m no more than the bug hoping to dodge a direct hit with the oncoming windshield. But, no plan is perfect.

Persnickety turned me on to an article referencing the Sixth Mass Extinction (SME). That article referenced an Extinction Radio Network (ERN). (Who knew they had Extinction Porn on da innerwebz?) Our own MuckAbout writes about this topic in his latest Muck’s Minute#11 and I’ve been giving the subject a great deal of thought for the last couple of years. I’ve done almost no reading on the subject save for the odd news headline referencing the word “extinction”.

I’m no great thinker but I find it amazing that my thoughts practically mirror the SME and Muck’s thoughts. Humans are just too fucked up for their own good. Greed is just too powerful of an instinct. The real tragedy is that it is, or more likely “was” within our potential to prevent a human caused extinction and be better than we currently are. Considering that we are likely on the downhill slope of the human race, I suppose that I shouldn’t give a fuck anymore but the instinct to go on, even against the odds, is even stronger.

I got off work early tonight and started watching National Parks: The US’S Best Idea. I think it’s a Ken Burn’s documentary and Kenny knows how to dig up some seriously good nuggets of history that were apparently left out of the more popular history books. Just before I left work I read Muck’s Minute#11 so the extinction by greed subject had been in my head and I was rolling it around in my mind while watching this first episode.

The subject of a group of greedy, well connected assclowns loosely associated with the Great Northern Railroad and da gooberment attempting to commercialize the newly created Yellowstone National Park into a Wildwood, NJ-esque moneymaking operation was being debated in Mordor. The program quotes Congressional debate on the subject of preserving it at a time when real damage was already being done. This quote caught my attention:

“The great curse of this age and of the American people is its materialistic tendency. Money, money is the cry everywhere, until our people are held up to the world as noted for nothing except the acquisition of money at the expense of all aesthetic taste and of all love of nature.” (Senator George Vest, MO, 1883)

Some shit never changes. In so many ways, I’m ready for extinction now but both the dreamer and the psychopath in me wants to see how this shits turns out. I thought about looking into the Extinction Radio Network but I’d probably bum those poor bastards out.

I am resigned to our fate as well. Nick and I were unloaded our sod and discussing the latest odd turn of events in our own and the world events. They are both irrational acts that anyone with half a brain should be able to see have no chance of a positive outcome.

But, as my dear husband said so wisely… and we have said sadly many times: That is why we are here on this plot of land in the hills.
