A guy at work told me that the air quality is so bad here due to the wildfires that it’s hazardous to life according to the local news. It was dark enough last evening that the street lights started coming on about fours before sunset. Ash is falling out of the sky. The quality of sunlight is so altered that the green trees look almost orange and the sky ranges from dark grey to yellow. It’s like a different planet!

I_S- read a story about something similar recently but it was due to a sand storm in Australia. Everything and I mean everything looked orange. Strangest thing you ever saw. Keeping your air filtered in the rooms you spend most of your time would be a good thing.

Denninger’s most recent rant about stock market overvaluation suggests that, in order to get back to single-digit P/E’s the blue chips have to fall 70%.
I don’t mean to quibble, but is he nuts?
If stocks fall 70%, earnings will collapse, too. And I mean, COLLAPSE.
So let’s imagine that’s ANOTHER 70% (compounded.)
I know maff is haahd, but .3^2 = .09 (which is what you have LEFT!) That’s a 91% decline for the maff impaired.
That’s assuming the credit bubble doesn’t Hindenburg.
I remain of the opinion that a 90-98% collapse in the blue chip stock indices will play out between now and 2022 (give or take a year) and that the kick-off to this will take place during the next 10 months (followed by a sucker’s rally that will, when it fails, utterly destroy people who thought passive stock investing via mutual funds guaranteed them a long retirement of swatting golf balls with their buds.)

Naw. Bled dry by con artists using stupid people (black, white, green, etc.) as an excuse to run a vast con game where the con artists (our rulers) rake a nice cut off the “charity” they shower on the stupid people.
The Welfare State is a lot like ambulance-chasing for a contingency, or even better, like any kind of brokerage house or casino where the rubes walk in the door and, win or lose, the HOUSE gets rich off the rake. The game is ostensibly about the “customers” but it’s actually about the House getting rich.
Oh, but it’s “for the children,” or “there, living in the gutter go you but for the Grace of Government Officials.”
Numerically, there are more stupid Caucasians in the USA than there are stupid blacks. There are more stupid Chinese in China than there are total Mexicans in Mexico and the USA combined.
The human race is headed for continued disaster until stupidity (and its consequences) is no longer an acceptable rationale for the con game our rulers use to enrich themselves at the non-stupid’s expense.

I agree with dc.sunsets. I expect a bottom of DOW 4,000-5,000 when this all plays out. The recovery, over the course of a few decades, will be slow and sustainable, like the aftermath of the 1929 crash took decades to reach precious highs. However, I fully expect war in the meantime and given today’s nuclear technology, it may make a recovery this century all for naught as markets go the way of the dodo bird.

The nature of the collective cannot be superior to the mean of the populace.
America is populated with people who have long forsaken any thought about their lives.
This is as it must be; there is a cycle. Great success leads to total complacency and moral rot. One of my favorite sayings is, “nothing sets up failure like success.
America’s success sowed the seeds of its failure. Our blessing is to experience an ease and widespread luxury kings didn’t enjoy 200 years ago. Our curse is the experience it, and then watch it go away.
The collective is doomed. Democracy first creates a nation of thieves who seek to rob everyone around them via the ballot box. Then, once there is not enough left to steal, democracy creates a nation of cannibals who seek to eat the very lives of those around them.
To see a current example of the zombie phase, look to Venezuela, or perhaps Argentina. Life goes on, but it is much more difficult. I strongly suspect that kind of period is in our future.
