A lot of those 18 year old’s in 1944 were actually 15 – 17 year old’s that lied about their age to get in and serve during the war.

I doubt you’d see that happening today.

Only a gurl would dye their head My Little Pony Purple, only a man would hit the beach under fire. We are a nation of little gurls now.

Anon, you are right. My grandfather lied to get into WW1 and Dad did the same in WW2. Worth noting that both were treated like shit by the British government when the fighting finished.

Kokoda, not sure what you mean.

Both men were basically cheated of what were supposedly their rightful amount of demob money when they left service. In my grandfather’s case, he was a professional soldier from 1915 until 1946, and even though he was not awarded his full entitlement of demob cash he still had enough to buy a country pub. Came out as a regimental sergeant major in the REME, tons of medals.

However, he was demobbed in Burma, received his cash after sailing home to Southampton. On his way home to Luton he stopped off in London and blew all of it, mostly at the White City dog track. The family never forgave him, although I now realise after the life he had for over 30 years he had ample justification for acting as he did. Grandmother died poor and hating his guts.

Something I forgot to mention Kokoda. Grandfather was deducted cash from his payout for equipment he lost at Dunkirk. He got out on one of the last ships to leave the beach. Post war he got medals from France and Belgium for his actions as part of the rearguard.

Admin: As you will see from a comment I made on a more recent post on credit card debt I have not had electronic cash (or even an ATM card or cheque book) since 2007. I get great pleasure from your site and have felt guilty about not being able to contribute to the cause.

Hence, I have an idea. In 1945 my grandfather was leading a patrol in Burma that was ambushed by a lone Japanese sniper, who badly wounded a buddy. The sniper was killed by grandfather, who stripped his body and retrieved an ornamental knife. He was then mentioned in despatches for carrying his buddy through the jungle to safety over a two day period. I have the knife.

I would like to donate the knife to TBP to do with what you will. It is brass/steel/ivory and is somewhat of a family heirloom. However my son is Thai, and in this culture giving a knife is a big no-no, and I have been wondering what to do with it when I am gone. If you feel you could auction/sell it I will post it to you forthwith with thanks. Please email me your thoughts.

Happy you are interested Kokoda, I have loads of stories from covertly listening to the two old timers chat. What is really weird is that my father served under his future father in law in Burma before he even met my mother. Turned up for Sunday tea with his new girlfriend’s parents in the early 1950s and shat his pants when he saw her father was his former rsm.

Thai…..seeing as how your father served in Burma, I’m surprised you didn’t catch the relationship to my screen name.

Late to this Kokoda…this was the Aussies in Papua I think, well off my patch. What is your connection? Is there a Burma connection?
