What the hell does “technically” mean?
Washington’s one and only chance to attack and harm civilians was during the siege of Boston. When he gained the high ground and the cannon to shell the British-occupied city and inflict civilian and military casualties, the British left. No one will ever know what would have happened had the British decided to stay and fight. But one thing is sure. The Brits would have been decimated had they done so.
The rest of the Revolutionary War was fought largely on battlefields with minimal civilian casualties. When Washington attacked the Hessian barracks in Trenton NJ, it was the mercenary Hessians who suffered, not the residents of Trenton.
America’s wealthiest man gambled his life and property to put on a uniform, take to the field and lead the fight against the British. He remains the Bravest of the Brave in our history.
