Once we have decided what truth is ….all THINKING normally stops.

Any and all “new” truth is discarded. In other words; “My mind is made up, don’t confuse me with the facts.” This seems to be a shortfall suffered by the majority of humanity.

To prove that, one need go no further than religion. How many people — once they get older and are free from the demands of family, peers, teachers, and other social pressures —- actually CHANGE their viewpoints? I can assure you, it’s a negligible percentage.

Another example. I enjoy the TV show, Discover ID. Quite often they do shows about people who were clearly without a doubt wrongfully convicted. Due to new evidence, or DNA tests, or evidence that was falsified or withheld, the person receives a new trial. The new jury finds them innocent.

Now … here’s the bizzare part. They will interview the original jury, or arresting officer, or prosecutor. I have YET to see any of these groups admit they were wrong!!! No matter how powerful or convincing the new evidence is …. they ALL stick to their guns! “No! He was guilty! I’ll never change my mind!!”.

It’s fucking crazy I tell you … the near universal inability of folks to change their minds … once they are convinced they know the truth.

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant threat winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’”

The absolute least reliable testimony at any trail comes from “eye” witnesses. No two people see the same thing at the same time and no one will change their mind when it’s made up.

The Asimov quote tells it all.

Once we have decided what truth is ….all THINKING normally stops (StuckInNJ) Sad but true.

I normally have to take a trip to ‘the woodshed’ with my Father a couple of times per week to keep me on the straight and narrow. Reading in the book of James serves to provide the required correction when I stray off the path. Here’s one of my favorites from the fouth chapter.

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

    “God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[c]

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

The process is one that takes a lifetime. I don’t expect to ever know the whole truth until I see the way, the truth and the life face to face…

“Therefore Pilate said to Him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’”

    Jesus never answered Pilate.

Personally, I think that’s the most brilliant unanswered question ever.

I agree with you that the process takes a lifetime. Good luck in your search. And to me also!
