If you’ve never seen this movie, it’s the greatest concert film ever made. Martin Scorcese directed it in 1976.

A great flick indeed-my folks took me to see it as a teenager. I have at least a couple disks from each of your featured bands in my “road trip” collection. Also Janis, Grateful Dead & Warren Zevon-Don’t leave home without them.

Remember that 21st Century Digital Boy post where everybody started with the King Crimson? One of the kids who made the video posted and gave props to K C… Now that’s old music that I can dig!!!

    LOL

Those weekend videos aren’t so useless after all… Komrade Kurr actually registered, I think.

21st Century Schizoid Man? Yeah, I remember. I posted the King Crimson link. For a self-proclaimed “E-tard”, I felt like a fucking hero getting the link to work. Grateful Dead is in the eye of the beholder-really early stuff with Pigpen was pretty rockin’. That dude could sing the blues.

I own this own VCR and DVD…greatest concert ever filmed.

BTW, the Night They Drove ole’ Dixie
Down is one of the finest pieces of music ever recorded.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down lyrics
    Songwriters: Robertson, Robbie;

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
‘Til Stoneman’s cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of ’65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell
It’s a time I remember, oh so well

The night they drove old Dixie down
    And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down
    And the people were singing
    They went, “La, la, la”

Back with my wife in Tennessee, when one day she called to me
“Virgil, quick, come see, there go the Robert E.Lee”
Now I don’t mind choppin’ wood, and I don’t care if the money’s no good
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest
But they should never have taken the very best

The night they drove old Dixie down
    [. From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/b/band-lyrics/the-night-they-drove-old-dixie-down-lyrics.html .]
    And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singing
    They went, “La, la, la”

Like my father before me, I will work the land
And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand
He was just eighteen, proud and brave, but a Yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the mud below my feet
You can’t raise a Caine back up when he’s in defeat

The night they drove old Dixie down
    And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singing
    They went, “Na, na, na”

The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down
    And the people were singing
    They went, “Na, na, na”

    What in the hell is a “V C R”?

Is that a reference to the first Star Trek movie?

  9. Diogenes says:

In the early days the Dead were all about their live shows. Once in every 20 or 30 shows they would achieve magic. I was no deadhead but was lucky enough to see for myself one night. They finished and left the stage. No applause…no calls for an encore…nothing. After about 5 minutes or so everybody came out of it. Haven’t seen anything like it since. And it wasn’t just the pot – there was always weed; even on the nights they sucked.

Like I said, I wasn’t a deadhead and they did suck sometimes. Never saw them again after I left Berkeley in 1971. But that one night surely was an amazing thing to see.

I was more into The Jeff Beck Group and Fleetwood Mack in those days.

And yeah, I know; JBES & FMES

    I’ve always loved wise-ass…WAES?

Flash sez” : “The Night They Drove ole’ Dixie Down”, is one of the finest pieces of music ever recorded.” This is about the first thing – well maybe the third or forth thing that Flash has said that I heartily agree with.

It’s a wail of defeat by a dying cause, looking forward into a bleak future.

Perhaps we should write something that reflects what we are facing but it would take far more talent that mine to even attempt it.

Amazing…never heard that line before; and I love Jeff Beck like flash loves Dylan. How’d you have that so handy?

Zappa and Captain Beefheart went to high school together. What are the odds of something like that happening? The Captain was more my style – y’think Punky’s more fluid than Ry Cooder?

You’ve mentioned them before, right? I used to listen to them a lot back when MTV didn’t suck and had 120 Minutes and Alternative Nation. Drove my wife nuts; she hated that shit.

Not me – I’m not a boomer; I’m a rocknrolla. And if it’s got a taste of delta, better yet. And I’ve passed it on to my (millenial) daughters.
