Commodities, deflation, Gold, Inflation, silver
I’m sure the talking heads on CNBC are simply ecstatic about the 1.5% stock market increase today. The 1% are very happy, since they own all the stocks. People in the real world – the 99% – tend to use other things. Let’s see how much they are up today:
- Oil up 4%
- Cotton up 4%
- Sugar up 5%
- Orange Juice up 2.5%
- Lumber up 2%
- Copper up 3%
- Silver up 6%
- Gold up 3%
I’m sure glad all the money printing in the world by Ben and his central banker butt buddies hasn’t caused any inflation. At least our real wages keep going down.

Denny’s Will Raise Prices to Offset Food Inflation
Denny’s Corp. (DENN), a family restaurant chain with about 1,600 locations, will raise menu prices this year to help make up for higher commodity costs and maintain profit margin, Chief Executive Officer John Miller said.
Denny’s “will go out early in the year with a modest price increase,” Miller said in a telephone interview today. He declined to specify when the increase will take place or how much it will be.
The Spartanburg, South Carolina-based company expects food costs to rise between 3 percent and 5 percent in 2012, Miller said. Denny’s raised menu prices by about 1 percent in June, when it introduced its Fit Fare healthier entrees, he said.
Denny’s rose (DENN) 1.3 percent to $3.81 at 3:25 p.m. in New York and had gained 5 percent last year.
As other chains, including Starbucks Corp. (SBUX), have announced price increases to counter the rising costs of ingredients, Steak ‘n Shake said today that it won’t raise prices this year.
“During 2012, we have no intention of raising menu prices, especially because we are attempting to insulate our customers from inflation,” Steak ‘n Shake CEO Sardar Biglari said in a statement.
Indianapolis-based Steak ‘n Shake, with 489 locations, is owned by Biglari Holdings Inc. (BH), which also owns the Western Sizzlin chain.

Other non-counted/immaterial increases:
Health insurance for small biz, up another 20-35%, plus a 1.5% tax that kicked in Jan 1.
Delivery charges on utilities, nearly 50% increase over a couple years ago. The actual “energy” portion is down, the bill is up, that will work out great.
Regulations and taxes on biz, way up. My job has doubled in scope, wish I could afford to hire someone.
My phone/cable taxes are up about 20% from last year.
UPS & FedEx surcharges and shipping rates are up about 10%, bodes well for consumer prices.
Biz & car insurance, up about 15%
Car registration (tax) up another 10%.
The potential to be busted for a crime I didn’t know I committed is up around 100%. On the back of year over year increases going back to 9/11 of 100%.
Happy New Year, looks like the old year only more expensive and more likely to run up against some government, do-gooder, unit meaning to criminalize my life and suck money from my pockets.
Good times.
