    There were three black students in my college class. One of them was my roommate (he’s currently an oncologist in St. Louis), and his boyhood home was three doors away from Ike and Tina Turner in East St. Louis. White mother, father black as coal. We were very close friends.

    His favorite saying, “You ain’t a man ’till you split a black oak.” Never found out if that were true, but I do know a pretty woman when I see one.
