The hacking group known as Anonymous intends to attack the core servers that control the routing of all internet traffic. DNS, or Domain Name Servers, are a critical backbone of the web and make it possible for internet surfers to reach web site destinations by typing in a domain name in their browsers. Once a particular web site is requested, a query is sent to a domain name server, which then redirects that web address to a specific IP address on the web. Without these servers, access to web sites through traditional means (typing in a ‘dot com’) becomes impossible, because there is no way to direct the traffic to the appropriate web site destination.

According to a statement released by Anonymous, it is these servers that will come under fire on Saturday, March 31.

Anonymous says they do not intend to ‘kill’ the internet completely, but rather, the end game of Operation Blackout 2012 is a temporary take down of the internet where “it hurts most.” According to the group, the operation is being carried out to:

…protest SOPA, Wallstreet, our irresponsible leaders and the beloved bankers who are starving the world for their own selfish needs out of sheer sadistic fun, on March 31, anonymous will shut the Internet down. (source)

If this latest threat is carried out, it will highlight the significant security risks inherent in the internet as it exists today. According to numerous reports, including those of the head of US Cyber Security General Keith Alexander, infrastructure, commerce and transportation are susceptible to attacks that could damage physical equipment like thousand-ton machines, cause widespread power outages, and affect just-in-time delivery systems that keep food, gas and commerce flowing.

If Anonymous is capable of attacking core DNS servers that take down the web, even for a day, it would be a show of just how fragile our entire way of life really is. Though Anonymous hackers undoubtedly include some of the best and brightest techies out there, they would likely pale in comparison to the cumulative power of hackers operating under the sponsorship of a large Asian government (we won’t name any names), or a coordinated rogue terror network that acts not for the purpose of protest, but devastation.

If such an attack were to be unleashed on the Untied States terrorism experts suggest a coordinated take-down of the entire United States could be executed in as little as 15 minutes.

    Well said, Stucky.

However, what if Anonymous is just another arm of the fed.gov? What if their real reason is to create even more chaos? Which will, OF COURSE, create an emergency, into which the fed.gov steps in with even more draconian measures.

    Crisis – Reaction – Solution.

A tried and tested means to clamp down on freedom and liberty, probably coming to a country near you, and soon.

Same thoughts as Hope. I’d like to think this is a real, sincere, independent protest, but it could easily play into the hands of those who want MORE control, monitoring and censorship. And that makes me wonder who is likely to perpetrate it.

Just going to make sure I have all my monthly bills paid for and extra cash on hand, if this does happen. You can bet that any action would include the U.S. financial system, so no credit/debit cards or any other electronic transfers will take place.

Wouldn’t be such a bad thing for people to realize just how fragile the whole thing is. Maybe then they’ll take prepping more seriously and get at least a bit ready for what’s to come.

What better justification to pass new “Internet Security Laws”….Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who has been pushing this Orwellian legislation, would be very pleased if Anonymous, I mean the CIA, succeeds.

..more black flag ops designed to spread the war on terror to the internet , the very last unthrottled freedom ? Well,at least we got to see the wild wide world of internet before Big Brother took over….It was great.

I also remember “Anonymous” threatening to take down Facebook for a day awhile back…and that never came to fruition…the problem with “anonymous” is that anyone, even the CIA, can create an “anonymous” video claiming to be a group of dissident hackers…and no one would be the wiser.

Why are they going to do this on March 31? The evening of March 31, between the hours of – oh say – 5 PM and 10 PM EST, we may have a little war going on where the internet may be the ONLY way to get any information about it. Iran is 7 hours ahead of us, so anytime after midnight Sunday morning, Iran time is prime time.

Makes one wonder, doesn’t it.. Wheels within wheels. Shut down the net just in time to keep info from flowing and then blame Anon for it? Muzzle the MSM at the same time. Such conspiracy games.

  14. Mary Malone says:

A story related to Internet Blackout -

The other night I was sitting in bed, researching on the Internet for info on a MBS Trust. Found what I was looking for in several minutes. I searched the Pool Servicing Agreement (PSA) and in 5 minutes located the list of loans that were supposed to be in the pool. The one I was looking for wasn’t there. It was a $76K mortgage for a home in Maine. The PSA had only one property listed for Maine – and the mortgage was $350,500.

So, I was able to gather evidence in about 20 minutes that the Trust suing a woman for foreclosure – had absolutely no standing. The whole thing was a sham.

Mr. Malone was watching me work and says, “I’m surprised they haven’t shut down the Internet yet to stop people like you.”

There are many reasons they want to lock us out of the Internet – this is just another one.

BTW – The homeowner contacted the attorney for the Trust and demanded he sign an affidavit that he had personally reviewed all documents and verified the information as true.

A week later, she received notice from the attorney that the case was dismissed, to benefit the homeowner.

    Heh.
