STORY TIME – WHEN DID YOU WAKE UP?

Dustwallow suggested a thread on when people woke up and realized our economic and political system was corrupt, rigged, dysfunctional, and designed to benefit the few at the expense of the many. I’ll start it off.

I turned 40 in 2003. I knew the world had changed after 9/11 but I was still a diehard Republican. I had voted for Bush in 2000. I was outraged by the 9/11 terrorist attack and fully supported the invasion of Afghanistan. I didn’t question the rapid passage of the Patriot Act. I had never even heard of Ron Paul. I also believed the rhetoric from the Bush administration leading up to the Iraq War. I particularly trusted Colin Powell, so when he went before the world showing pictures of weapons sites and mobile labs, I was convinced.

As the Iraq War got under way and no weapons of mass destruction were found, I began to question the entire story. This coincided with my personal disillusionment with the company I had helped go from $80 million in revenue to $1 billion in revenue. My fourteen years of dedicated service was ending badly as a clueless CEO ruined the company and people I thought were friends threw me under the bus.

After leaving IKEA and being so angry at Bush’s lies that I actually voted for Kerry in 2004, I began to read the writings of Bill Bonner, John Mauldin, Richard Russell, John Hussman, Robert Shiller, Doug Casey, and many of the websites listed on the side of this page. These people opened my eyes to the evils of the Federal Reserve, inflation and debt financed “prosperity”. I began following Ron Paul and reading his articles. I questioned everything I had been taught and everything being spewed at me by the MSM.

When I witnessed the scorn and ridicule heaped upon Ron Paul by the Republican Party establishment during the 2007/2008 debates I was infuriated and decided to write an article. Lew Rockwell published Why We Need Ron Paul in the spring of 2008. I found an outlet for my new found passion at the Seeking Alpha website. My first article on the site in early August of 2008 was Is the Banking System Safe?. I wrote an article per week all through the 2008/2009 crash. I was the third most popular writer on Seeking Alpha, but as they got bigger they tried to censor and edit my articles.

That was when I started TBP version 1 with Crazy Jason. That ended in a scene remiscient of a Quentan Tarantino movie. For the last two years I’ve been running my own site with the help of some good friends at my university.

That is the story of my awakening. Let’s hear everyone’s story, even those who normally don’t post.

Thanks, jmarz. My blog address is here: http://propertyfreedompeace.blogspot.com/

Patience certainly is a virtue in these unpredictable times. I bought my first business in the midst of Reagan’s presidency. His optimism was genuinely infectious and his administration was, at least, predictable. Still, if you start small, work hard and satisfy customers, the rewards are there anytime, if you have the energy. Getting into business is a whole lot easier than getting out. It tends to consume you. So act prudently.

Anyone who doubts Mises’ theories needs only go into business to experience their truth first hand. You’re right about his understanding of the business cycle being a help. And then there’s the truth that price is determined not by your costs but by the market. But even basic insights that human beings act with purpose, that both sides always benefit in a free exchange, and that the consumer is sovereign in a free market are invaluable. (And there are pockets of the American market that are still relatively free.)

I remember once early on at a Libertarian political convention I mentioned how much work, time and commitment my newly-bought business required. My libertarian friend said: “Maybe you made a mistake and bought a lemon.” I couldn’t believe that comment came from a libertarian. I told him I didn’t buy the business for what the former owners had done with it in the past. I bought it anticipating what I would do with it in the future. That idea is straight from Mises. Action is always an attempt to exchange your current state of affairs for a more satisfactory state of affairs in the future.

Mises kept me grounded and humble. 🙂

Turning 50 this year — I never bought into any of it — none of the madness/sickness of modernity and hyper nation/statism or banksterim. The price of this is being isolated and disconnected — who want to hang around someone who tells you that your world and worldview are doomed. The past 4 or 5 years, I have felt less alone but still haven’t been able to establish a community of flesh-and-blood folks to discuss and prepare.

I’m developing a love for all communities. Sharing with and supporting others is so satisfying. Also, I am no threat to TPTB, but WE are.

It has been a pleasure reading all of your experiences. I wonder how many more are out there? This what gives me hope.

It has been a slow and steady awakening.
There was Vietnam/Watergate to begin with, of course.
WIth a lifetime career in the semiconductor industry, I saw first hand the methodical and unstoppable exodus of jobs to overseas starting in the 80’s.
A game of musical chairs, with fewer and fewer left every year.
My steady readings of financialsenseonline.
The insanity of the dotcom boom and bust.
911 and the Bush lies.
The moment both McCain and Obama thought the original 3 page TARP giveaway was a good idea as it stood over the objections of the people.
Finding TBP.
The increasing stark contrast between most media and truth, when news became entertainment.
In the first year of the TSA when they held me at the gate for over an hour, shoeless, sitting there
as they pretended to be examining my camera (I really don’t fly anymore).
When they crushed OWS.
One look at Larry Ellisons’ Yacht.
Campaigning for Ron Paul with local Meetup.com group.

I NEVER THOUGHT… EVER, that I would stand on street corners with signs protesting against
banks, the Federal Reserve, the plutocracy, the 1%, the TSA, and the massive corruption
and greed that is the power elite. But I do now, even if its just myself.
The people need constant reminders. Their memory seems very short.

In the “We’re all doomed” category of awakening, that my rant on how to fix Kenmore water heater pilot light keeps going out video out views EVERY serious political , Ron Paul, stock market fraud , hobbie video I’ve ever posted by an order of magnitude and climbs every day tells me people don’t care about that other serious/creative stuff, unless it provides useful actionable information and/or a bit of humor. Prat fall videos go viral, and the admin here seems to have hit on the perfect combo of hilarious yet serious commentary on American life. That Jon Stewart is the main source of news for many, and the great Carlin understood it all, tells me the best chance at real poltical change is when the Carlin/Jessie Ventura/Ron Paul figure steps forward to lead. Are you out there?

I turned 40 in 1996. What is happening to people now happened to me then. I couldn’t belive I worked my butt off for over 20 years and had nothing to show for it. The bankers grabbed it all and left me in a camper with a disabled wife……..

We decided to do a “Scarlet O’hara” and make sure it NEVER happened again. We moved around the country while I worked and worked and worked. We ate hotdogs and lived in our camper while I was making 5,000.00$ a week take home! Every chance I had we dropped surplus money in gold and silver. I just wanted money that they couldn’t grab or diddle with. By 2001, while working at Enron, it collapsed and we just went on vacation.

We did buy a little place at a lake, but NEVER EVER borrowed another dime. I kept working my tail off and we kept eating hotdogs. There was no chance of buying a house with the runaway prices…so we just kept working, eating hotdogs and buying bullion…while my friends laughed at me/us.

When 2010 got here, the bust caught up with us and I got sacked. But we just just headed up to our place at the lake and kept on eating hotdogs etc. We have not had to cash out any bullion yet, but hope to see deflation and exact our revenge with a vengeance.

They really screwed up when they showed us how the game was/is played and now everyone is finding out. We were lucky, we got our asses handed to us in 1996 and had 14 years to get ready for this. We were prepping before there was such a thing.

I am sorry for saying this….but we all need to have our asses handed to us before we can say we have learned and won’t screw up again. With the wake up call, it will never happen. Consequently, I can say that because of that….Obama has been the best thing that has happened for this country since we needed to have the crap knocked out of us to wake up. Lets hope enough of us survive the beating headed our way to pick up the pieces……and rebuild.

I was only 22 when I first heard of supply-side economics in 1980, better known as trickle down, even better known as trickle on. Cutting taxes for the wealthy and corporations while increasing the burden and slashing services and infrastructure for the rest, and making up for part of the loss of revenues with enormous new Reagan – Bush debt. From 1980 to 1993 heaping mountains of new debt, and a short break from it under Clinton, only to be redoubled under BushCo II. Unfortunately he left the economy in such a total mess we cannot now return to prosperity and real organic growth without a total reset, something the wealthy and corporate owners will never permit because it will zero out their assets along with everything else.

For those that think GOP politicians are your saviors, or even in any way superior to other politicians I have to ask why do you even come here? Clearly you have learned nothing about the reasons for our horrifying one way slide into darkness. If you can’t/won’t learn you are doomed to repeat your mistakes.

I began waking up in 1989. My wife and I had started a concrete construction busisines on Cape Cod in 1984. Our timing was very lucky – we caught the beginning of one of the biggest home construction booms that Cape Cod has ever seen. We were working harder than we had ever worked before but we never felt tired. In just a few short years we were abl to build a new house, start a family, build a new 64′ x 40′ commercial building to house our quickly growning business. At one point we had 13 emplyees on the payroll. The lowest paid man was making $12.00 per hour (1984 – 1989) and we almost always worked a fifty hour work week, so the men got a fair amount of over time. Our business paid all contributory payroll taxes and Worker’s Comp (another rip off) we had company health insurance and company uniforms paid for in full by the company. My men worked hard and had a nice life. Then in 1989 the local Savings and Loan (one “SENTRY BANK”) that held some (not all) of my mortgages was taken over by the RTC – The Resolution Trust Corporation. The RTC sent me a letter demanding all loans be paid in full within 30 days. The building boom by this date was over and we could not come up with the many tens of thousands of dollars that the RTC demanded be paid back in full. Thirty days later the tow trucks arrived with a “WRIT OF EXICUTION”. The RTC took everything that I had spent 6 years building – they stripped me of all of my equity. I lost my home, my business, my savings, my IRA savings – EVERYTHING. My wife and I were forced into a chapter 7 banckrupty. We went from an 80,000 (eighty thousand) per year income to nothing in a few short months. It was while my wife and I were on the steps of the Taunton MA banckruptcy court that we lost all faith in the banking system. Since that time we have seen the total debauchery of our political system, and indeed, most of this countries society as well. All one needs to do to see how fucked up most of the people in this country are is to witness the “Black Friday” shopping freak show. After we lost our business my wife went back to college and got her Master’s Degree in counseling. We opened an office and things were going very well for a couple of years. It appeare that finally, after many years of sacrifice and struggle that we were on the path to rebuild our finances. But this turned out to be an illusion. My wife at first was able to bill out at $130.00 dollars per clinical hour. By the time she had to close her practice in 2008 she was being reimbursed by the insurance companies at the rate of $65.00 dollars per clinical hour. All of our expenses went up over the years but the “mangaged care” insurance companies “managed” my wife out of business. All this while the CEO of United Health Care was paid a $300,000,000 (300 MILLION) bonus for reducing costs ! Unite owed my wife several thousand dollars in “declined” billings that she had “prior approval” for when we saw the ‘ceo bonus’ article in the New Your Times. For my wife this was the last straw. In May of 2007 I was involved in a very serious accident that took me three years to recover from. Durring this time I stumbled apon Peak Oil from reading a post by Richard Rainwater – the ‘self made billionare’. For me “Pandora’s” box had been opened and there was no turning back. I have found ” The Burning Platform” and many other speaker’s of truth since May of 2007. I have lost ALL FAITH in “The System” as it now exists. I am waiting for and indeed embracing “Collapse” of this totally corrupt and bankrupt system. It will self destruct of it’t own weight.

I woke up in stages.

Stage 1 2006:

I discovered the fruad monetary system established by the federal reserve while studying charts of USD, Gold, oil etc. I stumbled upon “sivlerbearcafe.com” back in 2006 and realized this rabbit hole was much deeper than I once thought. I then watched “the creature from jekyll island” by G Edward Griffin. I was awe struck by how ignorant I had been for 34 years, but I still didn’t grasp the entire picture. After watching the markets crash and discovering that the guys in power (Paulson, Geithner) were all ex GS fraudsters. I realized that our financial system was completely hijacked.

Stage 2 2008:

While blogging and discovering the truth about or corrupt markets, financial system, and monetary policy…i came accross the 9-11 truth movement. At first I was the guy ridiculing those who questioned the official story. Then I came accross this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml_n5gJgQ_U

I began to realized that the controllers of this country and perhpas the world were not only extremely powerful but they were fking dangerous killers willing to do anything to remain in power. These banking oligarchs own our politicians, they own the media feeds, they are in the population reduction business, and their biggest profits come from war.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1874212534444628577

Stage 3 2009:

My world was turned upside down to the sobbering reality of truth, and I began to reach out to others and explain what I had discovered. I soon realized that my awakening was too difficult for most to accept. Ridicule and ignorance was a common occurance when speaking to my friends and family. Most people are conditioned to accept what they are told. These people who run it all have created a phychological wall through media and education. It’s nearly impossible to wake up anyone…they have to come to terms with this on their own.

Stage 4 2010:

I began to question everything and i became a bit paranoid and depressed. I had so much to say…so much truth to share but no one would listen. I then found sgtreport.com and brotherjohnf.com These sites helped my condition of truth becauase it linked me to others who understand. The internet was my savior….not only did i have an outlet to realease my discoveries, but I found extremely intelligent articles and media that share my viewpoints.

Stage 5 2011…to now:

What was I going to do about it? After you accept that there isn’t much we can do to stop the train from running off the cliff http://usdebtclock.org/ I began to prepare. Food, protection, precious metals, rain barrels (water), bartering, gardening, solar, and simplfying my live by getting in excellent shape and learning how to fish. Once you come to terms with truth and you begin to plan/prep for the unknown…the world isn’t so scary anymore. Sure it would suck to be in a nuclear war, but what can we do about it? Learning how to prepare yourself physically, mentally, financially, and spirtually is a process that is different for everyone.

Good luck to all

I graduated from college and got my first professional full time job in 1996 with Lockheed Martin. For a few short years, I was reading Peter Lynch’s mass market paperbacks and believing in the stock market as a legitimate investment avenue. But from the very first dollar of payroll taxes taken from my paycheck, I knew I would never see that money again. I knew the system would be gone or watered down to irrelevance by the time I ever saw 65, or whatever age retirement had been increased to over the next 45 years.

A few years after that and I realized that the whole concept of retirement was essentially out the window and that I would be on my own personal recognizance until my last day on the planet. I felt that the best investment I could make with any of my money was in myself and I cashed out all my retirement accounts. The penalties were somewhat annoying but acceptable because I expected to lose that much value by leaving the money in the system anyway. “Cut your losses” and “don’t throw good money after bad” come to mind here.

I know it might be tough to stomach, staring down the barrel of a $10k, $20k+ whatever penalty for cashing out their IRA (mine was surely much less than that at the time, but still significant relative to my earnings). But you can pay the 20% up front right now and free your labor-savings from the clutches of a dying system, or you can take a 20% loss due to inflation and falling asset prices in the very near term and yet *still* have your labor-savings locked up in the system as it continues to circle and go down the bowl. So even today, with much larger accounts, I would recommend anyone to just take the 20% hit without further delay, like, today, and pile whatever is leftover into hard assets. Just take the suck. What are the chances that gold and silver will be +20% one year from now?

Anyway, I think it’s only after 9/11 that the darker elements really began to surface. Since that time we have learned that we don’t have something so simple as a failing system on our hands, we have a system that is corrupt from the core to the four corners of the globe. Watching those towers come down, it was just absurd to my engineering mind that the situation was what is was being portrayed to be. I had no idea what was going on, I just knew what was being presented was not the truth.

I’m only addressing the political/economic perspective and, like many other commenters, I’ve experienced isolation as a result of my views. From a larger perspective, I have questioned the nature of this entire reality for as long as I have any memory at all, and investigated heavily into what various sources have had to say about that. I have not been awake this whole time, but I have been trying to wake up this whole time. Am I awake? Are any of us awake? Will the waking up process end upon the realization of the corruption of our economic and political systems? Somehow, I don’t think so. Waking up is going to have to provide some context for the 80 billion other suns like our own in the Milky Way galaxy and the 80 billion other galaxies besides the Milky Way that the Hubble can see. Then we will have woken up. Or will we just trade in one Earth-bound socioeconomic system for another one? Shall we just carry on for another 10,000 years, this time with hard money?

I would first like, no love, to thank the “ADMIISTRATOR” for all of his tireless effort. I have wondered where he gets the time to make so many posts while running a family and working for a living. I believe that that was a picture of you in your “PINK FLOYD” pictures. My hat is off to you sir. I have moved to PA in the summer of 2011 to work in the gas fracking business ( I drove into town on fumes and with 150.00 dollars to my name) – the only one of vey few industies that is / was BOOMING in this SHIT BAG FRAUDULENT ECONOMY. I am making about 90K working for Cabot Oil and Gas CORP. This puts me back to what I was making in the 1980’s – the only difference is that now I am 53 years old and not in my mid twenties. I must work 84 hours per week to make this money (all of the big money – ha ha – is made in Over Time) and with my road time I am putting in more than 90 hours per week. The economic destruction of my wife and mine’s life hase caused the woman of my dreams to become seperated and recently divorced after 27 years together. If there is ever a “REVOLUTION” with US citizens RIOTING against their Government and the bankers I will be in the front lines ! My only hope is that this happens before I become too old and must watch from the side lines in a wheel chair while drinking from a sippy cup !

I awoke after losing my job in 2008. I just started paying attention to the world around me, and it became appallingly obvious that there was something terribly wrong! The more I learned, the hungrier I became for information-and so I began to search out the Truth-Tellers. I found many, and I learned a lot of truth about the Federal Reserve, the wars, 9-11, how I had lived, what I had believed, education, the military industrial complex, money (silver & gold), currency (fiat, of course), food, medicine, regulation, and the Constitution. I am not the same person today, my life has changed dramatically, and I feel I have a responsibility to be part of the solution instead part of the problem. My family and friends don’t understand, they just don’t see it-and I believe that this has been the most painful part of this process.

In 2008, I was living large with a 400/month SUV payment, a nice condo just outside of a small city, a great job making more money than I had ever made, unlimited Starbucks, cellphones, dancing and partying on the weekends, friends, trips, and dining out.

Today I live in rural area with no neighbors and no cell phone. I raise chickens, grow my own organic vegetables, bake my own breads, cook from scratch using organic products, buy locally grown products from local farmers, make my own haircare and skincare products, heat with a woodstove, and have learned to operate firearms.

I hold a master degree and I have been employed within the hospitality industry for over 30 years. I have no health, dental, or life insurance, and I have no vehicle. I make minimum wage working part-time in a carry-out, and I have no disposable income, but I Am Awake-and that my friends, is worth more than anything!

I’m telling you, you can’t trust any gubmint organization. Our gubmint recently granted Shera Bechard an O-1 visa.

Here’s the thing, below is a picture of Ms. Bechard. Please examine the picture very carefully and very closely, and then tell me what “extraordinary ability” this woman has.

We must erect laws to stop this kind of thing!

BTW, I omitted one important personal “event” from my rant above. While in college, I came across a copy of Nietzsche’s “The Genealogy of Morals” (sometimes translated “The Genealogy of Morality”). It was one of those books that made so much sense had was stated with such clarity and intellectual force that it became a dividing line in my life. I had been trying to be a “born-again Christian” (without much success) up to that point in my life.

Neat stories. Encouraging to realize how many woke up in the last 5 years.

I came at things from an environmental angle, started reading about economics of conservation issues in the mid 90s. At the same time, now I was done with school, I could read up on what the original war on Iraq, Desert Storm, was really about. The official stories never add up.

So I knew by the late 90s about our history of imperial warmongering that betrays our fundamental ideas about what we stand for as a country. How could we fall into this? Started reading about propaganda in the US (Chomsky & Herman, McChesney, Bagdikian,…). I was also curious to understand why the poor countries remain that way, in spite of all the supposed ‘aid’ and institutions that exist to ‘help’ them. So I started learning about the IMF, World Bank, WTO, USAID, etc., and came to see that these were just instruments of neocolonialism. e.g. see Chossudovsky.

Protested in DC and NYC against World Bank, WTO, and the 2003 war on Iraq. But permitted protests are pathetic; was it Al Haig who said ‘let them protest all they want, as long as they pay their taxes’?

I knew there was a housing bubble, but distracted by work, and outside the country, I didn’t see 2007/8/9 coming. Once it did, I determined to figure out what the hell just happened. An acquaintance pointed me toward JSMineset. Didn’t take long to see what was happening. I had thought I was cynical after studying our wars and propaganda, but this took it to a new level.

At about the same time, some health issues led me to start reading about nutrition and gut health (I’m partial to the nutritional views put forward in the books ‘Know Your Fats’ and ‘Nourishing Traditions’). Seems to me the American medical/industrial complex (think of the industrial agriculture, chemical, and retail food sectors, for example, in addition to the AMA, ADA, and the pharmaceutical and insurance industries) works to maximize profit off of Americans’ ill health, with the complicity of the US gov’t. To paraphrase Dylan Ratigan, ‘they don’t want you healthy, and they don’t want you dead, they want you somewhere in between’.

Conclusion: it’s rotten to the core.

The rudest awakening of all, though, has been to see how people cannot be aroused even to defend their own economic and health interests. I never expected my criticism of US wars to get much traction. But people won’t even look out for their own health and finances–WTF?!? Never mind our financial bankruptcy, what about bankruptcy of intellect, ethics, and courage? Like others, the inability of smart family and friends to add things up has been difficult. But as someone else said, we each wake up in our own time.

Solutions: Decentralize power; downsize gov’t dramatically, return to a minimalist philosophy; hard money; free markets within sensible limits; electoral reform; resurgence of families, communities, small-scale agriculture, and self-employment…

Been in South America since 2003. Miss my friends, family, and the Rockies, but I like it here, and can’t see going back to the US any time soon. Yeah, they’re corrupt as shit here too, but comparatively they have so little control here. The prez here has been chased out of more than one city by rock-throwing protestors :). They don’t strangle entrepreneurship. And nice farmland is affordable.

That makes me think of one more thing. One good way of assessing the degree of freedom you have as an American is to learn what it takes to get free of the system, and how we fare in that regard compared to other countries. As an expat, I’ve learned that the US pretty much owns our asses, in a way virtually no other country on the planet does to its citizens. There was a good interview on the topic on Financial Sense Newshour a couple months back with Mark Nestman.

I started to wonder back in the 1980s as globalisation and outsourcing really started to gather steam. Did not make sense intuitively. How could it when the capability to make things was going elsewhere? I remember working for a company in the very early 1990sd and hearing how “knowledge workers” were the big thing. What BS I thought, even if I was sort of one of them.
As a coin collector, I knew the monetary system was unsustainable.
I really shook my head and started REALLY waking up after 911 when Bush said we should all keep sopping. That did not compute.
More and more info came my way, I started seeking this info out and became more and more awake. Although I keep learning more and more about the reality (and still find it hard to believe based n on the years of conditioning), I do believe it. I have been what I would call really awake since 2007 or so after years of fighting through the dream state, level by level.
