    Just in case you’re interested in trivia ….

    According to Neil Young’s biography Shakey, the song originated when Young was on tour in the late 1980s. He and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro saw newspaper photos of the Ayatollah Khomeini’s body being carried to his grave as mourners were burning American flags in the street.

    Sampedro commented, “Whatever we do, we shouldn’t go near the Mideast. It’s probably better we just keep on rockin’ in the free world.” Young asked if Sampedro intended to use this idea as the basis of a song and when Sampedro said no, Young said that he would do so instead.

    @ Admin — PLEASE, if you aren’t familiar with them you really must check out the band Bad Religion. I will be so bold as to predict they will be a favorite for you. Bad Religion!!! Every song they’ve ever written could be a TBP article, only they’ve been writing them since 1980. These guys were prophetic visionaries.

    I understand you need to appeal to the giant BB demographic with their music… But show Gen x some love! Here are a few suggestions of songs:
    “I want to conquer the world” “you are the government” “change of ideas” “incomplete” “leave mine to me” “the handshake” “television” “better off dead” “slumber”

    When you decide to join the rest of the more-sensible Californians up here in the PNW, I’ll brew up an extra strong French press full of Cafe Mam Organic Tango blend and we can jam out to Stranger Than Fiction ;)

    I love all of Bad Religion’s songs, but that is my favorite album, the whole thing resonated with me on a (sub)generational level. I’m a young Xer – ’77 – what can I say. I FEEL those songs, almost autobiographically and they coincided with my philosophical awakening when I started reading hard on my own in High School: founding fathers, German philosophers, Russel Kirk, Ayn Rand, Edmund Burke, tons of History, religion, etc – and everything else I could get my hands on to explain to me why the world and society were so fucked up. Bad Religion had and expressed the same ‘feeling’ I had.

    IMHO, the song Slumber is *about the 4th turning*, and was spontaneously expressed. How Admin couldn’t be into them, after a year of you telling him? Wow. So much focus on the music of the Silents and BB… Gen x ignored, even though our shit is so much better and more relevant. At least you got the DUBSTEP post in there, Colma, good work on that.

    Well, back to the Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc.
