Well, recently a request for some Bad Religion was made by SAH, a fellow Xer my age, reminding me of my resolve to convert the Administrator into a Bad Religion fan and to repent his Green Day ways. In this endeavor I have found other BR fans… Even Novista threw a link to “Generator” up before. No less, I’ll start with a handful and if reminded later I’ll do more postings. SAH and any other fans who would like a post on TBP, Admin willing, throw links in the comment section and I’ll get around to embedding. Really, Bad Religion and their music and lyrics fit well with the TBP onslaught of pessimism, doom and criticism from an angle that is actually expressed at times in the Comments and posts, depending on moods. Hope you enjoy, and if not, I look forward to any reasons why so I can ridicule you in the comment section.
Bad Religion is perhaps one of the most enigmatic of the later punk genre…. With a long list of completely great songs spanning several decades, finding their best is a chore by reason of the simple fact that I can’t really say I dislike one of them. If you like a driving beat (perfect for workouts, skateboarding, or just waking up in the morning) combined with extremely thoughtful lyrics touching on the topics of religion (beware they are atheistic if not agnostic), politics (I would term them anarchic-progressive but that’s arguable) and artful poetry describing the human condition… you would absolutely dig on them as millions have. For those with Fourth Turning goggles, think of this as the perfect music of the Unraveling.
I’m going to post several ‘tube vids and add the lyrics below each. That may elongate the post but hopefully, if you are watching/listening to the tunes they will assist in the entertainment and/or thought provocation…. I’ll try to keep my own commentary and interpretation to a minimum.
“The Gray Race”
(The reduction of life and humanity to data and units… sometimes the last words in the song hit home for me. how about you?)
the framework of the world
is black and white
the infrastructure builders
flex their might
turning true emotion
into digital expression
one by one we all fall down
the gray race shrivels
trapped inside the world it creates
it’s black and white
the perputual destructive
motion machine
began to chart a course
never before seen
turning raw compassion
into fields of plus and minus
one by one we all give in
the gray race shrivels
trapped inside the world it creates
it’s black and white
I’d swear there were times when I was someone else
a person with determination and knowledge of the self
but you flattened me to rubble and now I can see that I’m
just faded negative of the image I used to be
and that’s our dilemma
“Modern Day Catastrophists”
(I have to throw this one in…. Very TBP imho)
take those potatoes out of your ear
listen to the warnings
verify all your fears
there’s a world outside
that’s ready to blow
and we’re all to blame
when it finally explodes
you gotta listen up
gotta listen to what
they’re telling you
gotta listen up and think
about what they’re saying to you
they’re the modern day catastrophists
they’ve got practical solutions
(know all the right equations)
they’re the self-appointed
righteous pragmatists
and they know 50 ways
to save the world
what makes you think
you can cure our disease?
maybe its just our biology
maybe its time to make room
for another species
this is the 21st Century
“You Are The Government”
(lyrics included, figure it out)
“The Voice Of God Is Government”
(A blast back to the Holy Rollin’ ’80s…. Up Muck’s alley, but could be interpreted as against modern P.C. Progressivism with a little thought)
“Better Off Dead”
(One of my favorites… From Creator to Created?)
“Supersonic”
(Truly about speed, but descriptive of anger too….)
Well am I making haste or could it be haste is making me
What’s time but a thing to kill or keep or buy or lose or live in
I gotta go faster
Keep up the pace
Just to stay in the human race
I could go supersonic
the problem’s chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate
Into oblivion
Into oblivi yah yah yah yah yah yah yan
Now here I go again
everything is alien
How does it feel to be outstripped by the pace of cultural change
My deeds are senseless
and rendered meaningless
When measured in that vein
I could go supersonic
the problem’s chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate into oblivion
Into oblivion
I won’t lie
it’s exciting
When I try
to decide things
I just want to live
decently
meaningfully
I’m in misery
I could I go supersonic
the problem’s chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate into oblivion
Into oblivi yah yah yah yah yah yah yan
“Slumber”
(For SAH…. definitely feel the 4th Turning in this one…. )
So, you’re feeling unimportant,
‘Cuz you’ve got nothing to say.
And your live is just a ramble
No one understand you anyway
Well, I got a piece of news son,
That might make you change your mind
Your life is historically meaningfull
And spans a significant time
Slumber will come soon
And you are helping to put it to sleep
Side by side we do our share
Faithfully assuring that
Slumber will come soon.
Well, now do you feel a little better
Lift up your head and walk away
Knowing we’re all in this togeter
For such a short time anyway
There is just no time to parade around
Sulking, i would rather laugh than cry
The rich, the poor, the strong, the weak
We share this place together
And we pitch into help it die
I’m not too good at giving morals
And I don’t fear the consequence
If life makes you scred and bitter
At least it’s not for very long
Slumber will come soon.
That’s just a few…. No less, Bad Religion is absolutely badass and I would recommend picking up their work if possible. For the Administrator, bopping to the relative bubble-gum rock of Green Day: Your commute may never be the same.

There’s a reason you don’t hear songs on the radio…
They’re too artistic, hardcore and have meaning that immediately flies over the head of the hypnotized masses of droolers and birdwatchers that want to bebop and bob their heads to feel-good garbage pumped incessantly into their porridge-mushed brains.
Radio playlists are for conforming meat-heads and the masses looking for the confirmation of their meaningless lives from the mass media.

Bad Religion is some REAL music, philosophy laid out in the most simple eloquent way.
@Admin actually, Bad Religion doesn’t get played on the radio for the same reason Ron Paul doesn’t get elected… they just go WAY over the heads of the majority aka Sheeple. Plus their lead Singer is a College Professor, so the vocabulary and literary/philosophical references in their music are completely incomprehensible to the masses.

I tried watching. I really did. I just can’t relate to that type of music.
I had to google the lyrics. They’re not bad. Not bad at all. Hey, if it helps BR’s listeners to stop being “puppets on a stool” then, good for them.
.
Hey sit down and listen and they’ll tell you when you’re wrong.
Eradicate but vindicate as “progress” creeps along.
Puritan work ethic maintains its subconscious edge
As Old Glory maintains your consciousness.
There’s a loser in the house, and a puppet on the stool,
And a crowded way of life, and a black reflecting pool,
And as the people bend, the moral fabric dies,
The country can’t pretend to ignore its people’s cries.
You are the government.
You are jurisprudence.
You are the volition.
You are juridiction.
And I make a difference too.

Further to my advice above, TBPers can be kind, caring, and willing to share advice with those going through personal trials and tribulations. It’s happened dozens of times.
That said, beware of getting into an argument. People here fight like little girls and bite, scratch, kick you in the groin, change the subject, carpet bomb you with links to irrelevant subjects, and post funny, mocking pics.
And that’s just for starters. When the pack of wolves smell blood, they move in for the kill.
The only way to defend yourself is to sign up for my vehement anti-illegal drug policy. If you do that, you can be assured that I’ve got your back. Until, of course, you say something stupid.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Colma is out, I take that as my cue to jump back in. I take the oldsters’ inability to understand Bad Religion as a simple matter of Generational Differences. It isn’t their fault that they don’t like Bad Religion, but it is their fault that Gen Xers like Colma and me do.
If you grew up an overprotected, spoiled, coddled children during the last Great High, then became over-represented narcissistic activists types out to destroy the happiness and stability of society in your youth, and then became self-satisfied ‘greed is good’ yuppies who sucked up larger than your share of the pie in adulthood unleashing the great unravelling while completely degrading and neglecting your children — well, you don’t get it and never will.
There is very good reason why these people resonated in their youth with groups like The Beatles, The Monkeys, The Partridge Family… There is very good reason why they love happy, poppy, superficial, “feel good” music – it represents the life and world they were blessed to inherit and destroy for the rest of us. There is very good reason why this generation (when they got around to making music of their own) produced the likes of: KC and The Sunshine Band – they spent their whole lives “Celebrating Good Times”. Even now, in the midst of the unravelling and crisis THEY created, most of this generation are still riding the high of their credit cards and cannot fathom reality. They can’t possibly fathom Bad Religion.
If you were lucky to not be the 1/3 aborted and actually got to be born a Nomad, reviled as “Rosemary’s Baby” or “The Omen” as an infant, neglected and treated like a dog (latch-key kid) as a child, and were subjected to the war on youth during the 1990s by your self satisfied Boomer/late-Silent gen parents (who are aptly described in 21st Century Digital Boy as “my daddy is a lazy middle class intellectual, my mommy is on Vallium it’s all ineffectual”) then you have a lot of anger and despair. You inherited a ruined world, of limited possibilities and an increasingly fractured and polarized society that has been trying to kill you since you were in utero. It is no mistake that Nirvana titled one of their albums In Utero and employ many themes of birth/death/pain in their music. That WAS Gen X’s “feel-good” music.
Bad Religion has a fast paced driving beat, matching the frenetic pace of our Gen x lives. They employ dark harmonies that match the reality of the dark unravelling we were born into. They speak the truth in a blunt, pragmatic way that is often laced with sad humor and irony, that matches our Gen x feeling of futility “There is just no time to parade around sulking, I would rather laugh than cry, the rich, the poor, the strong, the weak we share this place together and we pitch into help it die”.
If the stupid Boomers were capable of comprehending the fucking mess they made, they wouldn’t have made it. But they were having pre-AIDS free love, abortions, and snorting cocaine dancing to Disco. They can’t possibly comprehend the depth and Gravitas of the Gen Xers, nor would they be capable of the realism and fortitude that we have to weather this fucking shit storm and fix it. Of course they can’t comprehend Bad Religion. Plus, they are so old they can’t think fast enough to comprehend the lyrics.
It’s OK, Colma, we already knew the oldsters are stupid shits who can’t grasp reality. They are still slumbering, while we were BORN awake.

And if you aren’t sad and angry, why are you making vile, disgusting comments toward a person you dont know over a band that you dont care about? I wish the same treatment upon your Mother, Wife and Daughters next time they are walking alone through an innercity neighborhood.
Zip it, oldster, lashing out at me with your misdirected vitriolic garbage does you no good and rolls right off my back. @Llipoh – Cry Me has been essentially quoting your statements toward me from our first encounter on The Screwed Generation post. Now that you’ve spoken up, I realize it’s just the crassness that is the same, you have maybe 10 IQ points on your Boomer compatriot.
I was also suggesting that great minds from a great generation like yours think alike, and that maybe the 2 of you can get together to fund a PAC for the post-birth abortion of myself and the rest of Gen x that you didn’t get to pre-birth.
See, when I say I can’t wait for you guys to be fertilizer, I’m saying that I look forward to the future – you are getting old and no one lasts forever. May you all die peacefully of natural causes, once you all have the world will get better. You 2 are regretting that I was not MURDERED as a fetus. That is a little different. But hey, you Late-Silents/Boomers managed to murder 1/3 of your unborn, divorce 3-4 wives on average, and still spew idiotic sexist hate speech against the next generation online. Oh, and you turned a relatively stable society into a chaotic wreck. Not bad for a life’s work.
Thanks for the unravelling, boys. You won’t be here to see it, and frankly dont deserve to, but the chaos will get transformed back into order and stability. Say what you want about me, my generation, or the Millennials – but it’s our destiny and we are going to do it. The Generational difference in world view never ceases to amaze me.
Look, get out of your own heads long enough to understand that your generation and how it viewed the world between the ages of 0-40 has pretty much nothing in common with how Genx and millennials are looking at the future.
We Gen X aren’t stupid Utopian-chasing, change-the-world prophet generation assholes. Don’t you get it? We aren’t naively optimistic, and we’ve never had youthful exhuberance like the Boomers to think we are going to make changes that turn society into some “buy the world a Coke” fantasy nonsense.
There’s a big, chaotic, unsustainable horrid shit pile here, and we are going to figure out the best, most practical way to make things WORK and minimize the damage. Once we man up and get this decaying Boomer disaster under some control, maybe those team-oriented, slightly more optimistic, and much more numerous Millennials can be the good worker bees who build something new in its place.
I’ve never said Gen X and Millennials will make a perfect utopia (that stupidity is SO prophet of you to assume) all I’ve said is we will clean up this mess. In your moments of clarity, you Boomers moan about how everything is destroyed and going down fast. Yeah, no shit Sherlock. Someone has to fix it. Who’s it gonna be, you?! No, it’s gonna be us. But you owe us no thanks, it’s our destiny and we will fulfill it. I would add “for better or worse” but considering the magnitude of destruction you’ve unleashed in this turning – you’ve guaranteed our success. We can slack off and still make it better. Move along guys, you’ve done what you came here to do (unravel things) get out of the way so we can do what we are destined to do – survive and sort it out the best we can.

Gen X is already too old to clean up the mess – many need to be trying to organize their retirements. Millenials are still young enough. No one has the balls to clean things up. Reset will happen, one form or another, and things will start again.

@Llipoh, I don’t have enough time to re-read 600+ comments. If you say it wasn’t you, then accept my apology. I guess Slut, Bitch, Town Bicycle and Ragdouche are tasteful, while cunt is not. I’m not really familiar with old-geezer verbal abuse protocol.
Llipoh, flash, FBD, BB, Cry Me… All the same, you’re like a chorus of senile clones. I suppose you are the most memorable of the bunch of assholes, so hurray for you. The fact I called you out should be a point of honor for you. Here you are in the fray, helping your fellow old feminist Boomer male pals fill this thread with nonsense.
Honestly, I also called you out because I was getting bored on this thread, but think Bad Religion is so incredible that I’d like to keep this post in the recent comments section so people will check it out. I’m a crafty little Bitch/Slut/Cunt/Dumbfuck/Ragdouche/Feminazi aren’t I?
Colma, I’m out. They are close to having coronaries at this point.

SAH – everyone has standards. Some names are worse than others. I tend to draw the line at “cunt”, and also tend to avoid “motherfucker”.

I think that would be a good idea…. I was thinking of doing all their radio hits, but frankly there are many many many more worthy.
It will go for certain.
As for your other links…. Interesting, man, interesting. Hiroshima was good stuff.

Nice of your to offer admin a helping hand but … maybe you reverse cause and effect. That’s what happens when you trust Microsoft. Firefox grooves on here quite happily.

I stumbled upon this and have to say, whoever this Administrator person is, they clearly know nothing about BR. They are probably one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. Yeah not much radio play unless you live in Southern California, but there wouldn’t be any of these shitty radio bands if there was no BR.

Tom: Your assesment is dead on, but give Admin a break…. he was just being a grumpy-butt and prefers Skynard and Electric Lights Orchestra over ground-breaking thought-rock.
He admitted months later that he was wrong and was air-drumming to “21st Century” on a commute.
