Until I read this article, I didn’t know Dwight Eisenhower was the President when the Social Security Disablity Program was created. Like Eisenhower, I believe the truly disabled should be given help getting back on their feet. He described the program goal clearly - “to help rehabilitate the disabled so that they may return to useful employment.”
Well guess what happened? It became another clusterfuck entitlement program. Only 6% of all the people that go into the SSDI program EVER go back to work. I do believe our medical treatments have improved since the 1950s. You would think the majority of people who have become disabled would be able to go back to some sort of work at some point. But NOOOOO. The number of people in this program has surged by 16% in just the last three years. If you are obese, depressed, or have a sore back – you are disabled in the America of Obama. And once you punch your ticket into the SSDI program you get Medicare, SNAP, and an Obama phone.
There are 10.8 million people in the SSDI program costing you over $200 billion per year when you add up the additional program costs. There is no doubt in my mind that at least half of these people can and should work. The Free Shit Army waddles onward.

Yes America, Your Fellow Citizens DO Abuse Federal Aid Programs
“Governor Romney—and any candidate who wants to move us back toward a balanced budget—shouldn’t shy away from calling for the reform of such ill-conceived aid programs.
The media pounced on Governor Romney for implying that the nearly half of Americans who depend on government assistance enjoy being free riders. More than just political poison, such a presumption ignores how devastating the jobs crisis has been for so many Americans who yearn to be productive, independent, successful contributors to society.
Yet Americans shouldn’t make the mistake of ignoring how aid programs can be abused. Sadly, a not-insignificant portion of those receiving benefits do exploit assistance programs. This more than just wastes taxpayer dollars and leaves less for those who truly need it; perhaps most importantly, it enables a dependency that might be temporarily attractive, but limits someone’s life prospects and chances for long-term fulfillment.
Governor Romney—and any candidate who wants to move us back toward a balanced budget—shouldn’t shy away from calling for the reform of such ill-conceived aid programs.
Social Security’s disability insurance program would be the place to start. The number of Americans receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments—which average $1,111 per month for disabled workers—has increased substantially in recent years, from 9.3 million in January 2009 to 10.8 million Americans today. As the number of enrollees has climbed, so has SSDI spending. In 2011, payments through SSDI totaled nearly $129 billion.
That’s a lot of money, even by Washington’s standards. For some perspective, the federal Department of Transportation spent far less ($77 billion), and the entire Department of Labor used roughly the same budget ($132 billion). Yet SSDI’s official price tag dramatically understates the real costs associated with SSDI determinations, since those who qualify for disability payments automatically become eligible for Medicare after two years. According to Dr. Andrew Biggs of the American Enterprise Institute (the former principal deputy commission of the Social Security Administration (SSA)) Medicare’s annual expenditures on SSDI beneficiaries now exceed $70 billion.
Americans overwhelmingly support the idea of a safety net, and might not object to even SSDI’s large bill if those payments all went to those truly unable to work because of disability. Yet a recently released report by Senator Tom Coburn, the ranking member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, suggests that’s not the case. His committee examined 300 cases of Americans who were awarded Social Security disability benefits and determined that more than one quarter received benefits based on “insufficient, contradictory, or incomplete evidence.”
Those tempted to dismiss the report of a leading conservative Senator known for being unforgiving of government waste should note that the SSA also concluded in an internal review that 22 percent of disability awards made by Administrative Law Judges had errors and used incomplete evidence.
Eliminating all fraud within programs like SSDI may be impossible, and reasonable people can disagree about when a case reaches the threshold of complete disability. Yet it is clear that SSDI’s problems go beyond different shades of grey. Senator Coburn’s report notes that in three years, one judge in Oklahoma City decided 5,400 cases, approving more than 90 percent of them, and granted what will amount to more than $1.6 billion in lifetime federal benefits.
The sloppy process used to determine Social Security disability eligibility should alarm taxpayers given that the lifetime cost of each award averages $300,000. The life-time costs are so high because once on, few leave the program’s rolls. More than half of those matriculating from SSDI in 2011 left because they had reached full retirement age, and therefore transferred onto traditional Social Security benefits. Just 3.6 percent left because of medical improvement, and 6.1 percent returned to work.
This last finding—that few ever return to work—is particularly concerning. When the disability program was launched in 1956, President Eisenhower described its purpose as “to help rehabilitate the disabled so that they may return to useful employment,” as well as to “advance the economic security of the American people.” Yet SSDI falls sorely short on that first measure. Even the progressive think tank, Center for American Progress, criticized SSDI for providing “strong incentives to applicants and beneficiaries to remain permanently out of the workforce.”
Most Americans want more than to live on government’s dime. Most want good jobs so they can support themselves and start climbing the economic ladder. Safety net programs like SSDI should be reviewed and reformed so that they aid in that process, providing support for those truly in need, while protecting the interests of taxpayers and encouraging independence.

I am very embarrassed to say this, but what the hell, my life is pretty much already an open book here. I am embarrassed because I did NOT raise my son to be this way.
He gets about $750/month SSDI, and $250 month SNAP. How? He was diagnosed about two years ago as paranoid schizophrenic by a doctor in the state of Washington. He easily qualified for SSDI. But that diagnosis has long been discredited by both psychologists and psychiatrists in three different hospitals in Michigan. Does he still have mental/emotional issues? Yes. Is he TRULY disabled? No. Will he continue to get about $1,000/mo. from the government for as long as he wants? Yes. The system itself is what’s truly demented.
My other son is a hard-working responsible father of three who doesn’t accept free shit, even from me. So, I didn’t totally fuck up.

That’s a funny story. Did you really say all that? Funny shit, there.
I have a slightly funny story that happened just yesterday.
I went to Barnes&Noble yesterday. I went to read (free!!) sports mags about the upcoming college basketball season …. cuz Indiana University is picked to win it all. Yeah, baby!! After reading them I went to the Info Desk. My younger son recommended a book, “Fruit Hunters”, so I was hoping they’d have it in stock. The guy helping me looked kinda faggety … you know the look. Anyway, this is how the conversation went;
Me: “Could you check if you have the book “Fruit Hunters” in stock?
Him: No response. Just a quizzical look.
Me: “I’m sorry. Perhaps you didn’t hear me. It’s called “Fruit Hunters”, and I don’t know the author.”
Him: “Oh, OK. I just never heard of it.”
Me: “No problem.” (Now, I’m trying to be funny.) “It’s about the food, not the people.”
Him: “I take offense at that statement!!”. (In a somewhat raised voice.)
Me: “That’s OK. Look it up anyway.”
Him: “I said I take offense at that statement!!!”. (This time he said it loud enough to cause several nearby customers to stop and look.)
Me: In a stern but not too loud voice. “Look. I don’t really give a fuck what offends you. I was just trying to be a little funny. If you yell at me again I will shove you face into the computer screen. Now either look up the goddamn book, or get your manager.”
So, he gets on the phone and within 30 seconds the store manager is there. I explain the situation exactly as happened, including my profane response. The manager apologizes to me, and then offers me an immediate 25% manager’s discount on the book!! Don’t know what happened with the hypersensitive homo guy. Maybe I’ll go back tonight and if he’s there ask him if they have “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”.

Well, you’re half right, namely your comments about closing all military bases in Germany and Japan. And might I add, Great Britain, Turkey and many countries in the Middle East, South Korea, and Kosovo, plus most of the bases in Italy, Spain, and Easter Europe. All overkill to the Nth degree.
Programs like SSDI should be left to the states. If the states can afford SSDI-like programs and they’re working, fine. If not, then shut ‘em down or cut them back, which is much easier to do at the state level, where balanced budgets are a reality.
Every one of these federal “help the people” programs spirals out of control on a cost basis. And none of them are killed or cut back because of the lack of political will and common sense in Washington. Not one. And that’s why I said Ike made a mistake when he signed the SSDI bill.

Now this employee already had a designated parking space close to the building, a modified schedule (more breaks, allowed to sit at her job, and longer lunch), she had a handicapped placard for her car from the DMV, and she had qualified for rent assistance due to her having to work fewer hours.
I don’t think a person should get disability benefits for being obese if the only reason they are obese is their poor food choices and lack of exercise. People can be disabled and due to that they put on weight so that sucks and I think they should have their disability benefits due to the original disability.
But this lady is now getting state aid to sit around and do nothing and eat all day long while my taxes pay for it. Isn’t this just feeding the reason why she is on disability in the first place?”

They get anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000 in “back wages” once they’re approved. They get free housing, free food, free cell phone, free cash, free healthcare and meds. Around here, the cost of living is low. I know a guy, weighs 450 lbs, been on disability for more than 10 years, gets a brand new pick-up truck every year.
Over 220,000 disability recipients were caught going to 4 or more doctors per month, getting oxycontin or lortabs from each doctor (on their Medicare), and selling their meds. The government knows they are doing it and does nothing. Those are just the ones they caught. That’s an extra $3000 per month or more. It’s a big scam, a huge scam. Many, many are on disability and work. I’ve known SSDI recipients who work on cars, put up fences, construction, even roofers. They can put on a fucking roof, but are disabled?

A very easy way to reduce SSDI would be to hire investigators to tail the so called disabled and film them engaging in activities they claim to be unable to do. Insurance companies use to do this and I knew a guy who worked for Hal Lipset, the San Francisco private detective agency and he had great stories of him exposing insurance fraud cases of this type.
I have a friend ( and I’m sure many of us have similiar anecdotal stories like this) I worked with who had neck problems and despite our employer making every effort to keep him employed including changing his duties and allowing him to take breaks every hour, wanted to get on SSDI and, in effect,

The fact that he can do everything a normal person does not, in any way, preclude him from getting free money for life. He can’t be bothered by working, annoyed by showing up for work, or burdened by paying taxes. He lives in America, damn it, where you don’t have to work if you don’t want to. You are entitled, for life, to everything.
Especially food stamps
US Foodstamp Usage Rises To New Record High
“That data point of course was foodstamps (or the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP), and we are confident that no readers will be surprised to learn that foodstamp usage for both persons and households, has jumped to a new all time record…. Finally, and putting it all into perspective, since December 2007, or the start of the Great Depression ver 2.0, the number of jobs lost is 4.5 million, while those added to foodstamps and disability rolls, has increased by a unprecedented 21 million.”

Apparently Auric Goldfinger would be eligible for Food Stamps as I inquired myself as to the programs requirements. It seems ‘gold’ is not considered a financial asset for the purposes of eligibility. I filled out the ‘trial’ eligibility form and found that I too would be eligible if I converted all my financial assets into gold and kept only 2000 in cash, disposed of my vehicles and leased one ( I was considering a Jaguar as that would consume sufficient pension income) and even my paid for condo would cause no problems ( but the boat would).

“48 inches – 350 lbs” in response to my request for his height/weight to calculate his BMI.
Ok, he’s a really heavy midget coming in at 132 BMI, whereas anything over 30 BMI is considered obese. This makes him as dense as a neutron star and thus eligible as a WMD.
Conclusion? 24 hour drone surveillance over Admin’s house and neighborhood. DHS already has the address.

Showing a picture of Stephen Hawkings, and then saying that all disabled people should get off their asses and get back to work like he does is a pretty cheap shot. What about people like me who have gone insane? I used to be an engineer before I got sick. Do you want me to go back to work and design some insane highway bridges for you? I would like to be able to work, the money was nice. I have been waiting over a year now on a disability claim, having been unemployed for five years. Assuming I am successful, which is a big “if,” I can look forward to a meager pension which is barely enough to survive on. There are a lot of leechers on disability for sure, but there are a lot of others who simply have no hope without it. Do you want me sitting in front of your house begging for food every day? I can grow my hair and beard and put on some old army clothes and stop showering. A lot of others can do that too. Do we need millions of sick, crippled, insane, homeless beggars in one of the richest countries in the world? Suck it up, you’re lucky to have the privilege of being able to pay taxes too support it. Trust me the alternative is worse.

Dugz, enough of the B/S….. if you were really insane you’d either be working for the government or pushing pills in the medical field.

Any idiot can get on SSDI. You really are a loser if you can’t fake your insanity. Maybe you should go with back pain or depression.
Did you design the Schuykill Expressway?
