Can there be political bubbles like financial bubbles?
Financial bubbles, inflated by hopes and dreams, burst when reality negates any possibility that those hopes and dreams will be realized. At that point, sky-high stock or bond or real estate prices come crashing down to earth.
Can the same thing happen in politics? Can a skilled politician, who has become popular with soaring rhetoric and promises, deflate when it starts becoming clear that he is not going to deliver?
Of course, I am thinking about our president.
Mitt Romney demonstrated in the first presidential debate that the considerable gap between President Barack Obama’s rhetoric and his performance makes him a vulnerable candidate.
Yet, the president’s bubble is far from bursting.
Romney, in the debate, was aggressive but deferential toward Obama. He was deferential because, despite the poor state of the country after almost four years of the Obama administration, Barack Obama is still a popular president.
Recent polling shows his approval remains around 50 percent. At similar stages in the presidencies of the last two presidents voted out after one term, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, their popularity ratings were in the 30s.
What accounts for Barack Obama’s Teflon? How is it that, after almost four years of terrible economic results — high unemployment, sluggish growth, huge deficits and mounting national debt — that Obama’s persona is not more tarnished?
Shouldn’t today’s economic facts on the ground be sufficient to puncture the Obama bubble?
One part of the answer to this puzzle is the changing demographics of the country.
The United States today is a nation that is much less white, much less married and less traditional than it once was. These are growing trends and each reflects in at least some large part constituencies with values supportive of Obama’s worldview — activist government and moral relativism.
What was once the exception to the rule in America — not being white, not being married, not having traditional views on family, sex and abortion — is now becoming the rule. And these constituencies are becoming sufficiently large to elect a president.
National Journal released a poll right before the debate showing Obama and Romney dead even nationwide — 47 percent each — among likely voters.
The poll shows Obama’s white support at just 38 percent.
Obama was elected in 2008 with 43 percent of the white vote. It appears that he could be re-elected with even less.
In Gallup’s polling of last week, Obama’s approval among white voters stood at 39 percent.
He gets 38 percent approval among those who attend church weekly compared to 55 percent among those who attend church seldom or never.
And his approval among married voters is 40 percent compared to 57 percent among those not married.
According to data compiled by the Tax Foundation, the large majority of those now filing tax returns in the United States are single. In 1960, 65 percent of all tax filers were married and 35 percent single. In 2010, it was reversed — 61 percent of filers were single and 39 percent married.
When Obama pushes for taxing the rich, he’s not just pitting those with the highest incomes against everyone else. He’s pitting married against singles. Eight of 10 tax filers in the top 20 percent of earners are married. The majority of filers at the middle income and below are single.
It’s really a cultural divide, one you can be sure that Obama is very aware of, that is keeping his bubble inflated.
The fact that Obama’s support is still this strong despite his terrible record sends a clear warning to those looking for a new birth of American freedom.
Romney and Rep Paul Ryan should consider taking these constituencies on directly — blacks, Hispanics, singles — and explaining why America’s future hinges on shutting down the government plantation.

When you’re married, you’re part of a vast decision-making body. Before anything gets done there are meetings. Committees have to study the situation. And this is if the marriage works. That’s what’s so painful about divorce: you get impeached and you’re not even the president!

Worth remembering that South Africa was run by a European population that was only about 13% of the total and Rhodesia was only about 4% white when Ian Smith ran the place. Blacks have a lot of racial cohesion, they survive on it but their organizational skills are pitiful, the major reason why there are no large black run companies or institutions on the planet.
That said, they are conducting a low level war on whites, Asians and even Latinos. The head of a medium sized city’s police anti-gang unit told me that his biggest concern was Latinos would begin retaliating against blacks when their numbers became more equal. This past week in just north of Sarasota where I now live, two white men in their twenties were murdered by blacks in seperate incidents. The white guys asked for it as it appears these were drug deals gone bad but this low level slaughter of whites by black criminals goes on all the time and far exceeds the numbers of white on black lynchings that took place at the peak of white racism a century ago.
What will be very interesting to watch is how blacks react when they either lose political power or are forced to share it with Latinos in our cities. Right now most Latinos are not very integrated into American political life because they are new and in many cases don’t speak English and or are not citizens. That’s going to change and when it does LOOK OUT. The municipality I used to work for used its Public Works, utilities and other city agencies as jobs program for young blacks. The voting population of the city was split about 50-50 between black and white but blacks had about 2/3′s of the low skill positions throughout city government. The Latino population was maybe 20% of the population when I retired but in my agency of some 650 people we only employed one that I was aware of though we did have a couple of Puerto Ricans who were black but were bi-lingual.
The point is that whites were underrepresented in municipal jobs save for those positions where professional sklls were required such as engineers, journey level tradesmen, accountants etc. That won’t change but what is going to have to change is blacks giving up their lock on entry and low skill government employment to make room for the Latino kids coming out of our school system.
Conservatives can either rail against Latino immigration or we can make common cause with them and insist they be given the jobs blacks now hold in proportion to their numbers in government and quasi government employment such as utility companies, large corporations that contract with the government, academia etc. Obama may offer amnesty to illegal alien children but what he can’t offer them is the government jobs his black base now holds. Did you know 22% of IRS employees are black? What if Obama had to cut that down to the 13% that blacks are entitled to in a racial spoils system they created and offer those extra jobs to Latinos?
What if he had to do that across the board in every Federal agency, the Post Office, government set asides, Amtrak? You think he would still get 95% of the black vote. He might get the 70% of the small , in absolute terms, Latino vote he know gets but he would have to earn at a huge political cost. OTOH the Republicans could pick up most of the Latino vote of today for little or no cost and acquire their political loyalty in the future as their voting power grows.
