Stucky says:
Cool!!
I posted this video in another thread (hat tip to me — LOLLOL) and cahuitabeachbound said she didn’t know what the point was.
So here was my response. You can read it and then decide if you want to waste 30 minutes of your life.
=======================================================================
Well, for sure, the movie is quite corny in a 1960’s kind of way. The fear of a commie behind every bush is something most here haven’t experienced first hand. (Being young does have its disadvantages.)
I doubt you listened to it though. Because at the 2:15 mark the purpose of the film is clearly explained – how Mr. Donovon takes his liberties for granted. And then at the 27 min mark Jack Webb talks about freedom’s responsibilities being a privilege, freedom not being hereditary and it must be earned, freedom has a price and that price is vigilance and the responsibility of every citizen, not just the government. And that when freedom is left to only the government, freedom will be lost. Isn’t this a message the masses need to learn TODAY?
Was the acting good? Not really. The point of posting it is that Americans at one point understood what real “freedom” entailed — (the main characters in this film were ‘The Greatest Generation’) — compared to today where most think freedom is getting free shit or that freedom is mostly government’s responsibility. We have fallen a long, long way. And, we will continue to lose freedom after freedom seeing how most don’t even know how the fuck to define it. That’s the point.

Did you catch Salma in the recent movie “Savages”? Made me a believer. You’d love the movie, it’s about two rich kids who grow weed and sell it. I won’t spoil the rest…

Poor slobs in the USSR have been told what to do for so long they dont know what to do with freedom.Many wish for the good?old days of communism.

Did anyone see 60 Minutes today?
They did a segment on Shin Dong-hyuk …. born INTO a prison camp for some his GRANDFATHER did. But he escaped.
Since we’re talking about freedom …. Here is an exchange between Anderson Cooper and Shin;
===================== =
Anderson Cooper: What kind of food he had eaten?
Shin Dong-hyuk: A lot of different things. Broiled chicken. Barbecued pig. The most important thing was the thought that even a prisoner like me could eat chicken and pork if I were able to escape the barbed wires.
Anderson Cooper: I’ve heard people define freedom in many ways. I’ve never heard someone define it as broiled chicken.
Shin Dong-hyuk: I still think of freedom in that way.
Anderson Cooper: That’s what freedom means to you?
Shin Dong-hyuk: People can eat what they want. It could be the greatest gift from God.
Anderson Cooper: You were ready to die– just to get a good meal?
Shin Dong-hyuk: Yes.

===================== =
There ya go; freedom as chicken soup.
I’m probably exaggerating, but if we’re not careful in defending REAL freedom, we may one day also think of it as “chicken soup”.

A tad bit more info.
Shin’s mother and older brother were accused of trying to escape ….. they were killed before his eyes , and HE himself was tortured severely for their sins. He was just 13 years old at the time. And, oh, …. HE was the one who reported then … partially so that he could have a full belly for the first time in his life, and partially because that’s what the system trained him to do.
Don’t judge him. He’s not a monster. The system made him what he is. He had no points of reference for even the most basic human emotions …. he says he still doesn’t know what “love” is.
OK. I’ll shut up now.

Thanks, Stuck, nice find. Made in ’62, a year before I (and Admin) was even born. I grew up watching Dragnet, so Jack Webb conveys credibility. The takeaway moment (besides the ones you mentioned): 18:05 “This is a mistake. One big mistake.” One Big Ass Mistake, America. Not that things weren’t already fucked up and doomed for failure, but did we need to accelerate the collapse? Maybe so, let’s get this shit over with. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Too bad too few (myself include) have done so little.

@ everyone besides Stucky
Read Stucky’s comments above. They are instructive and from a (really tall) Austrian immigrant who came to this country many decades ago and who has had his share of ups and downs.
This immigrant citizen gets it. He understands liberty and how it can be so brutally lost for something as simple as having enough to eat. I think many areas of the planet are headed in that exact same direction.

Americans don’t understand what freedom and liberty truly means to man. They have no clue and sadly, I don’t believe it can be taught to well-fed people that believe in illusions.
Most think it means the freedom to buy nearly free shit – or be gifted free shit. “I can still go to Disneyland and buy a (foreign owned) Budweiser, I must be free.”
As long as the majority continues to think like communists and believe in PC and spread the wealth, the Red Nightmare lingers on.
I believe it was China’s (could have been a Ruskie) leader that was quoted as saying they would defeat America without ever having to fire a bullet.
Looks like he was right.
Stuck, broiled chicken equates to freedom. In New York it would be a 32 oz Big Gulp.
Not quite the same thing, is it?

Again, wow, thanks.
As I have shared here before, both my parents lived (and suffered) under both the Nazi’s and Communists. I have not. But they taught me well.
Food for thought; in the past few years they have complained more than once concerning life in America today; “It wasn’t this bad under Hitler.” I’m not kidding. They weren’t kidding. And it flips me the fuck out every time they say it.

You’re welcome. Give your parents a pass on their comments. I think advanced age tends to filter out bad stuff in the past and hold onto only fond memories.
My 97 yr old mom holds, ahem, rather racist views on blacks. You would not enjoy listening to her opinions on black athletes, starting with Tiger Woods. But she’s also a rabid Redskins fan. So I like to point out to her what a great start rookie Redskins quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin is having with the Skins. She’s starting to agree…..grudgingly.

Well, yes and no, Chuck. Salma is very attractive, and I’ve spent A LOT of time in Bogota, all of it in hotel rooms. Many Colombian females are also very attractive, as you state, but I don’t recall the hotel maids qualifying for a Hollywood screen test. Now, did you get lucky, Chuck?

I don’t need to write a 10,000 word post.
Years BEFORE Tiger ran into his indefensible personal problems, my mom was ranting against this black upstart in the lilly-white world of golf with her “I can’t stand that guy” with nothing to back it up. And I mean nothing. Then she’ll go into how much she likes Phil Mikelsen and doesn’t understand why the cameras focus so much on Woods, who might be leading a tournament, and ignoring what Mikelsen is doing, when he may not even be on the leader board. She’s a product of small-town America in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Her views were formed when the Silent Generation were babes-in-arms.
Same with the Redskins, which was the last team in the NFL to draft blacks thanks to the openly racist owner Edward Bennett Williams. She often comments on “how there are so many black players” are on the Redskins, as if there were something wrong with that. She’s 97. I grit my teeth and change the subject. I repeat. She’s 97.
As for Woods being an asshole, you’ll get no argument from me. Asshole may be too kind of a word, but I base that on someone who wisely advised to judge people not on the color of their skin, but the content of their character. Now, who was that? It’ll come to me soon.

SSS, nope, I remember Lenin’s, this came later, more in the Nixon(ish) (but could decades later) timeframe. From memory it was around the time the wall fell.
Well, what do you know, I had read about it from (what I thought) was a reputable,fact-checked, blog. Seems it wasn’t as into the fact-checking as I gave them credit for. Now I (when I bothered to look) found that the “quote” is a convoluted amalgamation of quotes that Khruschev made over the years around 1960. Basically he asserted they would “feed” us bits of socialism and we would wake up communist without their having declared a war upon us.
Thanks for keeping me honest, and better educated.
@Stuck, I’m sorry your parents are having to live through this shit again. You would think we would be able to evolve away from these re-playing memes throughout history. *sigh*
Thanks to my *ahem* track record with marriage, when I go to a wedding I find my mind screaming, “DON’T do it! DON’T do it.” Last week I watched an naturalization oath ceremony, “DON’T do it! DON’T do it.” was playing full blast.
Sad thing is depending on where the people were coming from, this insane government may still seem better. At least for now.
Peace to your parents. You too.
