I bet Colorado gets a lot more spring break visits from college students in 2013. I understand SSS is taking a vacation from his vacation in Colorado. I wonder why?

Pot legalized in Colo. with gov’s proclamation

DENVER — Marijuana for recreational use became legal in Colorado Monday, when the governor took the procedural step of declaring the voter-approved change part of the state constitution.

Colorado became the second state after Washington to allow pot use without a doctor’s recommendation. Both states prohibit public use of the drug, and commercial sales in Colorado and Washington won’t be permitted until after regulations are written next year.

Hickenlooper, a Democrat, opposed the measure but had no veto power over the voter-approved amendment to the state constitution. He tweeted his declaration Monday and sent an executive order to reporters by email after the fact. That prevented a countdown to legalization as seen in Washington, where the law’s supporters gathered to smoke in public.

“Voters were loud and clear on Election Day,” Hickenlooper said in his statement. The law allowed him until Jan. 5 to declare marijuana legal.

Adults over 21 in Colorado may now possess up to an ounce of marijuana, or six plants. Public use and sale of the drug remain illegal.

Colorado and Washington officials both have asked the U.S. Department of Justice for guidance on the laws that conflict with federal drug law. So far the federal government has offered little guidance beyond stating that marijuana remains illegal and that the controlled Substances Act will be enforced. Of special concern for state regulators is how to protect state employees who violate federal drug law by complying with state marijuana laws.

Hickenlooper also announced a state task force Monday to help craft the marijuana regulations. The 24-member task force includes law enforcement, agriculture officials and marijuana advocates.

The governor admonished the task force not to ponder whether marijuana should be legal.

“The Task Force shall respect the will of the voters of Colorado and shall not engage in a debate of the merits of marijuana legalization,” the executive order read.

Hickenlooper told the task force to “work to reconcile Colorado and federal laws such that the new laws and regulations do not subject Colorado state and local governments and state and local government employees to prosecution by the federal government.”

Colorado’s marijuana measure, Amendment 64, was approved with 55 percent of the vote last month. One of the authors of Colorado’s pot amendment, Mason Tvert, called the declaration “truly historic.”

“We are certain that this will be a successful endeavor and Colorado will become a model for other states to follow,” Tvert said in a statement.

I am curious as to how the federal government will respond. Regardless of how you may feel about making it legal in your own state, I don’t see why the taxes of people in, say, South Carolina should be spent overriding the wishes of voters in Colorado or Washington.

The funny thing is that MaryJane may be liberty, but is known by the medical profession to be very bad for one’s health. So the liberal democrats have a real problem on their hands; let their constituents puff away, but also know they’re contributing to some mighty future health problems. Bloomberg and his ilk tax sugar drinks, but they’re fine to support much worse damage from marijuana smoking. But Obamacare will take care of the ill health that follows, so all will be well in the USA

Just as a matter of record, 90% of the “Grassroots” (sic) research done by individuals on Hydroponics comes from the Pot Growers. The Small Biz Suppliers who sell complete Hydroponic systems mainly sell to Pot Growers.

If you DO set up a Hydroponics system to grow some FOOD, you can certainly use same system for growing GANGA. :)

    @RE

My landscape partner came to the job from a local community college last year laden with a bunch of donated grow products confiscated from pot busts and then donated to to the CC horticulture program.

He put some of those products on our flowers and bushes and Oh-My-God I have never seen such results in my life. Groundcovers that normally get 8″ tall grew knee high, bushes ran amok, flowers got enormous. Those pot grow products had fertilizer numbers on them like I have never seen before in my life and absolutely smacked our standard garden plants into Jack and the Beanstalk territory. It was frightening. Who wants thigh high oxalis?

I have never seen those grow products in my standard garden store. That stuff is absolutely scary. The plants went wild and I’m not so sure that’s a good thing…..

Freaky results. Really did scare me. I have never seen before such plant response from boughten growing aids. The pot business has created some fertilizers which should be used sparingly and with the utmost caution. Frightening stuff.

It’s a BAD thing to ge high productivity out of a growing arangement?

On the Diner, the :”Dirt Crowd” of Permaculturists have a lot of reservations regarding Hydroponics. Specifically the inter-relationship between the bacteria and fungi and insects that all work together in a typical dirt based growing systemto produce a given edible food product. Is the Hydroponically produced plant as “healthy” as the similar dirt based one is? Open quesiton at the moment amongst the permacuture.dirt folks and the hydroponists. It gets kind of Mystical at times as well, this is the way it goes on the Diner. LOL.

From my POV, the main deal here is productivity and conservation of resource. If a hydroponic setup works to produce more Potatoes and more Energy for you to eat, it is a GOOD thing to pursue. Are the Hydroponically Gown Potatoes as “Healthy” for you as the Dirt Based version? I got no idea, but they do not taste different, and they have the same calorie content. Besides, you can grow plenty in your Basement, which you cannot do with permaculture, that is for sure.

Hydroponics is a subject I know nearly nothing about. But those concentrated fertilizer products with numbers in the THREE digits absolutely zapped our garden plants into the stratosphere.

I’m a flower person, I grow flowers. Whatever fertilizer the pot growers have been using is staggeringly stupendous. And I’m not sure in a good way.

I just don’t trust products that super enhance nature into 5X morph speed.

Marijuana Cuts Lung Cancer Tumor Growth In Half, Study Shows

Apr. 17, 2007 — The active ingredient in marijuana cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070417193338.htm

    http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2012/10/18/research-into-marijuana-medical-benefits-limited-scientists-cite-challenge-studying-illegal-drug/tfBIDWRcS1e46R3wFituZP/story.html

Individual doctors and patient advocacy groups, including the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts and the state chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, have endorsed the ballot question, saying marijuana can help patients and is available now.

There is ample anecdotal evidence to support the idea, said Dr. Eric Ruby, Ethan’s father and a Taunton pediatrician who has become a vocal advocate for the Massachusetts proposal.

“We haven’t done the studies because [the drug is] illegal,” he said. “Because it’s illegal, we can’t do the studies. That’s not scientific. That’s circular.”

To study marijuana, researchers must be licensed by the US Drug Enforcement Administration and get access to marijuana grown at the University of Mississippi, which contracts with the National Institute on Drug Abuse to produce the only federally sanctioned supply. That process can prove onerous, if not impossible, acting as a deterrent for those who might want to study marijuana’s benefits, some researchers said.

In 2000, the University of California created the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, with $9 million from the state. The state’s blessing and the university’s reputation helped to secure federal approvals, said Dr. Igor Grant, the center’s director, who is based in San Diego. In the past decade, he and colleagues have completed the most comprehensive research to date of the effects of marijuana in patients, including studies that were randomized and double-blind, gold standards in research.

Four studies found the drug to be useful in treating pain. Three were in patients with HIV who had pain resulting from damage to their nervous system. Another study found that marijuana reduced muscle stiffness in patients with multiple sclerosis. But the studies were small, each involving dozens of patients rather than the hundreds or thousands needed to advance the drug toward federal approval.

“What’s surprised us, actually, was the consistency of the evidence,” Grant said.

The next step would be to pursue large trials and to compare smoked and vaporized marijuana with approved drugs. But Grant’s center has reached the end of its funding, with no more promised from the state.Continued…

    Antitumor Effects

One study in mice and rats suggested that cannabinoids may have a protective effect against the development of certain types of tumors.[3] During this 2-year study, groups of mice and rats were given various doses of THC by gavage. A dose-related decrease in the incidence of hepatic adenoma tumors and hepatocellular carcinoma was observed in the mice. Decreased incidences of benign tumors (polyps and adenomas) in other organs (mammary gland, uterus, pituitary, testis, and pancreas) were also noted in the rats. In another study, delta-9-THC, delta-8-THC, and cannabinol were found to inhibit the growth of Lewis lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo .[4] In addition, other tumors have been shown to be sensitive to cannabinoid-induced growth inhibition.[5-8]

Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis invasion and metastasis.[9-12] One review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of action of cannabinoids as antitumor agents.[13] Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death. These compounds have been shown to induce apoptosis in glioma cells in culture and induce regression of glioma tumors in mice and rats. Cannabinoids protect normal glial cells of astroglial and oligodendroglial lineages from apoptosis mediated by the CB1 receptor.[14]

My second year in college I was an RA in the dorms (to help pay my way).

The first floor had 3 rooms, the only rooms with their own bathroom – the Chief RA of the 10 building complex, a gal getting her graduate degree in chicken vocalizations (or some such thing) and a very secretive guy that nobody ever saw very much of.

During the Christmas break, the fire department came through and checked out all the smoke detectors and stuff in each student’s room.

I came back a few days early from break to find yellow police tape around the entire building and a ton police types strolling about. WTF?

Turns out that secretive guy had converted his dorm room into a hydroponic pot operation, complete with automatic lights and watering!!! The plants were freaking enormous!!!

Remember that UC Davis is renowned for its agricultural programs, bada boom.

The professors could have probably learned a thing or two from this guy, as his experience in the REAL WORLD was obviously so successful.

Asked if he would get permission from vehicle owners before tainting their property with drug residue, the squirmy, sheepish officer replied that he would do so “sometimes.” In other words, he tacitly admitted that he sometimes or often does so without either asking the owners or informing them of what had been done to their vehicles.
Recall now that Reichert claimed to have found marijuana “shake” in Huff’s vehicle. That is almost certainly not the first time he has made such a claim – which is probably true in those instances involving vehicles he had previously tainted during “training” exercises.
In his deposition Reichert disclosed that he will visit motels near the expressway and ask staff if they have seen “suspicious” people with out-of-state license plates who have paid for their rooms in cash. He also admitted that he has used vehicles in motel parking lots in “residue training” exercises.
This is how a “self-initiated significant incident” can be easily created: Reichert visits a motel parking lot, prompts a member of the productive class to say that there are “suspicious” people lodging therein, then he goes into the parking lot and plants drug “evidence” that is later used as “probable cause” for a traffic stop.
