Thanks to compulsory education and the rotary press, the propagandist has been able, for many years past, to convey his messages to virtually every adult in every civilized country. Today, thanks to radio and television, he is in the happy position of being able to communicate even with unschooled adults and not yet literate children.

Rolling Stone places Freebird at #191 on its list of the 500 greatest rock and roll songs.
The greatest rock and roll song on Gayle’s list is Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix. (#17 RS)
Sometime you should treat us to Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth (#63). It seems to stay relevant.

Yeah Chronic Agitator Bach was probably a better composer than Roy Orbison but we are talking about the greatest Rock n Roll song and by my lights Chuck Berry was the guy who really is the definition of Rock n Roll. The basic electric guitar, the rhythm and bass lines that defined the genre and, perhaps the best rocky lyricist of all time. Not deep poetry but topical teenage poetry. ” I couldn’t
get her seatbelt unloose, Teacher don’t know how mean she looks !
Mind you Chuck was before my time. Roll Over Beethoven came out in 56. First song I heard ( new) by Chuck was “It was a Teenage Wedding”. Amazing that a blackman from that era could so completely write lyrics that were perfectly in tune with white teenage angst. He couldn’t ‘get her seatbelt unloose’ so the Everly Brothers redid the line as ‘Wake up Little Susie

Chuck was also considered one of the guitar greats. Rolling Stone has him at #7 all-time. He had hands that were huge. Most guitarists can not make the spans he did when playing Johnny B. Goode, etc.

SSS – the Eagles are the most professional band I have ever seen. Cannot comment as to their earlier days, but having seen them twice in the last few years, they are truly professional. Their harm onies are near perfect – which takes a lot of work. Walsh is an excellent guitarist, Schmidt is an outstanding bass player, Henley is a pro at a variey of instruments who still has his pipes. Frey is the weak link, as his voice has gone down hill in a pretty big way. They also use some outstanding backing musicians.

Last heard the Eagles live in about 1996 or 1997 (Alzheimer’s prevents me from pinpointing exactly when). Glenn Fry was still at the top of his game, so I’m surprised at your comments about him considering the video I posted was made at the 2007 CMA. Anyway, I agree with you and add this comment. Don Henley’s politics eat shit.
But let’s move on to the younger crowd’s musical tastes, some of which I really like. I’m thinking about changing my sceen name to Cool Dude, a nickname my granddaughter gave her uncle many years ago when she was very young. She pronounced it “Cool Doot.” Anyway, here you go.

SSS – I listened to the vid you posted. His voice help up ok in that. But in concert, over the course of a full concert, it is starting to struggle. Not complaining – simply pointing out that is how it is. It is very noticable given Henley still sounds fresh and young. Frey is 64 now, and that is no spring chicken.
Don Henley is an A-Grade douchebag. So long as he sings and doesn’t talk, I will keep going.

And so, will relate to you another thing, just because I have been there and done that and the kids on my lawn fear me…
UPS took their old DC-8s and we converted them from whatever airline wanted to be rid of them, so the pylons were removed [that what attaches the jet engine to the wing] and fitted with one that would accept the newer class of high bypass turbo-fan engines.
And so we did this. The DC-8 then had a better flight rating [less breakdowns] and was FASTER than the 757 767 they had in their fleet.
The DC-8s fuselage was double buck riveted [both sides] and those rivets were then shaved. It was a workhorse.
The flight controls were mainly fly by tab. Ir was simple and still flys today. =)
In fact the DC-8 could carry, in weight, a 727 and fly faster than a 727.

When I was flying, my number one rule was to never fuck with people who worked on your airplane (duh). Never. If an aviation mechanic talked to you about an issue, listen closely. Very, very closely. Sure, you can ask questions. But then follow his advice. Always. It worked. I’m still here.

Kill Bill says:
I recall very bad week. I was working in Sacramento. I was not working for Evergreen, but we did exercise flying one anothers employees being a corporate salute, to get pilots, mechanics, messengers to their destination.
And so, this Evergreen flight took off from Sacramento, and it circled, or tried to, the field. there was no tower, the pilots toggled their NAV switches to light the runway, and this DC-8 fully loaded with fuel, radioed, we had one in the maint shop. that he had a balance problem and could not gain altitude. It crashed, I still hear this in my mind.
It was a cargo loadng [weight and balance error]
A needless thing.
And so I decided, then, that I, would quit the aviation industry when a fool, without knowledge, could cause such a thing, when I, would be upheld, for I was licensed, to certify “that this aircraft was deemed fit for flight” and I was responsible for that until the next sign off.
And the fool was not.

It changed so many times
I’m not sure where it belongs
But they tell me the Baltic coast is full of amber
And the land was green
Before the tank came
One day I learned just how it used to be
The devils’ curse brought the whole world to it’s knees
And it was “Hey you, keep your head down
Don’t look around, please don’t make a sound
If they should find you now
The Man will shoot you down”
It’s a mighty long way out of the darkness
To where the sun is free to shine
Oh! The truck came by to put us in the back
And left us where the railroad tracks cross the line
Then the border guide took us by the hand
And led us through the hole into the promise land beyond
And I can hear him now
Whispering soft and low
“When you get to the other side
Just run like hell”
I thought I had a quiet place
Where I could learn how to catch my childhood dreams
But on my left and to my right they keep on shouting
While I’m stuck in between
Lord! I’m tired of running and I don’t believe I can
I can hear them calling time and time again
And it’s “Hey you, keep your head down
Don’t look around, please, don’t make a sound
If they should find you now
The Man will shoot you down”

Too many great songs to call a number one. I like Freebird, but I could never hear it again and I’d be just fine.
Some real greats that don’t get played:
Turn On Your Love Light — Grateful Dead
Eight Days a Week — The Beatles
Everyday — Buddy Holly
You Really Got Me — The Kinks
Low Spark of High Heel Boys — Traffic
Can’t Find My Way Home — Blind Faith
Gimme Some Lovin’ — The Spencer Davis Group

@ Kill Bill
I started my mechanical adventures in Aviation. Went to High School at Toledo Express Airport and received an Airframe license at 18. Still remember my practical when i told the test proctor the weight and balance datum marker was 18 inches off . ( I was correct ).
When I was 21 I went on an older model MD to Florida. As it was Delta it went through Atlanta as a second stop. When we were boarding I kept hearing a loud THUMP THUMP THUMP that would practically shake the plane. Perhaps 5-6 pops in all. Our first stop those staying stayed on and we waited for more passengers I heard the same THUMP THUMP THUMP.
Now at Atlanta we had a delay so they let us de plane to the concourse. I got a pop and watched them service the aircraft. Then I saw what the noise was. There was a leading edge slat that would not retract so they was hitting it with a large wooden mallet while another guy pushed up on what was prolly the lock bar. They would do this and cycle the slat and the first time it would retract on it’s own they was done.
Since none of these guys got on the plane neither did I. They did not give me a bit of trouble changing flights after I showed my license.
