I’m never going to make fun of those metal detector geeks again.
11 pound gold nugget found in Australia by guy with metal detector
January 17, 2013, 11:58 AM
Pack your bags, gold bugs!An Australian prospector using a state-of-the-art metal detector has discovered a gold “nugget” that weighs as much as some small dogs, the BBC reports. The 5.5 kg (11 pound) nugget was found about 2 feet below the surface of the ground near the town of Ballarat, in Victoria, according to the report. (See map below.)The gold in the nugget is worth more than $300,000 at current prices. But the size of the sample likely makes it worth even more. Gold was first discovered in the area more than 160 years ago.

Eddie says:
Several questions come to mind immediately:
Isn’t cyanide sometimes used in the metallurgy of gold?
Is this guy married?
How much of a cut does the goverment take off the top?
Is this an example of good karma? Terrible karma?
Where the hell is Ballarat? How many frequent flier miles would I have to cash in to get there?

I don’t think he’d have to pay a dime in taxes until he sells it.

There’s actually a town called “Port Fairy”. I guess that’s where DP came from. It would explain the sheep.

Who has mineral rights to the property?
On whose land was it found anyway?
I’m sure the Aussie gubmint or the Aboriginals will want a cut too.

You don’t have to go all the way to Australia to strike it rich. You can do that in Arkansas, home of the planet’s only public diamond mine: http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/
And if you hit it big you owe me a cut because I told you about it BICHEZ!
