QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Freedom is not empowerment. Empowerment is what the Serbs have in Bosnia. Anybody can grab a gun and be empowered. It’s not entitlement. An entitlement is what people on welfare get, and how free are they? It’s not an endlessly expanding list of rights — the “right” to education, the “right” to food and housing. That’s not freedom, that’s dependency. Those aren’t rights, those are the rations of slavery — hay and a barn for human cattle. There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors–psychology, sociology, women’s studies–to prove that nothing is anybody’s fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you’d have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“Everybody knows how to raise children, except the people who have them.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it’s free.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“We had a choice between Democrats who couldn’t learn from the past and Republicans who couldn’t stop living in it…”
P.J. O’Rourke

“When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.”
P.J. O’Rourke

“I don’t like ass kissers, flag wavers or team players. I like people who buck the system. Individualists. I often warn people: “Somewhere along the way, someone is going to tell you, ‘There is no “I” in team.’ What you should tell them is, ‘Maybe not. But there is an “I” in independence, individuality and integrity.’” Avoid teams at all cost. Keep your circle small. Never join a group that has a name. If they say, “We’re the So-and-Sos,” take a walk. And if, somehow, you must join, if it’s unavoidable, such as a union or a trade association, go ahead and join. But don’t participate; it will be your death. And if they tell you you’re not a team player, congratulate them on being observant.”

At the best company I ever worked for, they had a clear, unusual philosophy: Teams don’t do any work — each of the individuals on the team do varying amounts of the work. Individuals also do the cooperating and negotiating that leads to results. This was actually in the employee handbook. The company was very successful, with a dominant market share.

This company expected each individual to perform, and each manager to observe and evaluate their efforts to team results. An interesting feature of this approach was that the teams that were put together to discuss and solve problems functioned very smoothly and effectively, and disbanded when they had served their purpose.

I have always admired and believed in this philosophy, but have had to keep it to myself in some of the more dysfuntional work environments I found myself in. I came to believe that the more emphasis an organization placed on teams and temwork, the less likely they were to be effective and efficient.

This was the slogan used to pass Obamacare.

I love P.J. O’Rourke, he started out as a writer for “National Lampoon” magazine back in the ’70′s. That was a great mag. P.J.’s “O.C. and Stiggs” series was a classic.
