60 School Shootings Linked To Psychiatric Drugs Over Past 20 Years

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

(Before It’s News)

While in the wake to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre most of the debate has centered around gun control, perhaps more of the debate should be focused on the mood altering drugs that people are being given as more than 60 school shootings among and more than 4,800 violent attacks have been linked to psychiatric drugs.

The website SSRI Stories (http://ssristories.com/) tracks violence related to psychiatric drugs.  The site has links to more than 60 school shooting incidents as well as other violent acts over the past 20 years.

This website is a collection of 4,800+ news stories with the full media article available, mainly criminal in nature, that have appeared in the media (newspapers, TV, scientific journals)  or that were part of FDA testimony in either 1991, 2004 or 2006, in which antidepressants are mentioned.

This web site focuses on the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), of which Prozac (fluoxetine) was the first.  Other SSRIs are Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine) (known in the UK as Seroxat), Celexa (citalopam),  Lexapro (escitalopram), and Luvox (fluvoxamine).  Other newer antidepressants included in this list are Remeron (mirtazapine), Anafranil (clomipramine) and the SNRIs Effexor (venlafaxine), Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) as well as the dopamine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant Wellbutrin (bupropion) (also marketed as Zyban).

Although SSRI Stories only features cases which have appeared in the media, starting March 2012 there will be a Website:  http://www.rxisk.org/ which will allow personal stories to appear in a different Website from SSRI Stories.  This is the work of Dr. David Healy  http://davidhealy.org/welcome-to-data-based-medicine

By clicking on the links, you will be taken to the story.  Here is a snip from the first link: Hours before he walked into a Northern Illinois University lecture hall and inexplicably started a shooting rampage that ended five lives and his own, Steve Kazmierczak called one of the people he was closest to and said what would be a final goodbye. http://ssristories.com/index.php?sort=info&p=

As Dr. David Healy notes in his article “Welcome to Data Based Medicine”,  ‘Third: This site will in due course have a category of posts for people who have been through the system, people who have had partners, parents, children or friends injured by treatments and who have found themselves trapped in a Kafkaesque world when they have sought help from doctors, regulators or others who seem to be there to help us.  These stories are aimed at highlighting the lunacy of the current system but also showing how someone who is determined can change everything. These stories will likely migrate to:http://www.rxisk.org/ when it is up and running.’  Sign up now and be prepared to tell your story.

On December 15, 2010, PLoS Medicine released a study which showed that, in regard to prescription medications and violence, the FDA had received the most reports of violence from the SSRI & SNRI antidepressants (except for Chantix, the smoking cessation drug.)  The study listed Prozac as the number 2 drug for violence, and Paxil as number 3.  http://www.ssristories.com/show.php?item=47014

Antidepressants have been recognized as potential inducers of mania and psychosis since their introduction in the 1950s.  Klein and Fink1 described psychosis as an adverse effect of the older tricyclic antidepressant imipramine. Since the introduction of Prozac in December, 1987, there has been a massive increase in the number of people taking antidepressants. Preda and Bowers2 reported that over 200,000 people a year in the U.S. enter a hospital with antidepressant-associated mania and/or psychosis. The subsequent harm from this prescribing can be seen in these 4,800+ stories.

Before the introduction of Prozac in Dec. 1987, less than one percent of the population in the U.S. was diagnosed with bipolar disorder – also known as manic depression.  Now, with the widespread prescribing of antidepressants, the percent of the population in the United States that is diagnosed with bipolar disorder (swing from depression to mania or vice versa) has risen to 4.4% .  This is almost one out of every 23 people in the

My problem with this theory (and many others…) is that the article wants a magical solution.

I have no doubt that the over prescription of mind altering substances such as SSRIs is great cause for alarm, and in many cases borderline criminal.

That being said things like Sandy Hook are indicative of a larger SOCIAL issue.

They think the medication thing is the biggest issue? How about other demographics.

All of these shooters are basically the same person at their core:

    Age – Young man
    Race – White guy
Means – Seem to be average “middle” class american family

Loner, few friends, family has no real meaningful contact with him. Does decently in school (just well enough not to be bothered by teachers, but not so good as to require effort).

No real male role model. Not involved in school extra curriculars. Probably doesn’t go to church, and if they do they aren’t involved in the social/family bonding side of the experience.

THEY ARE ALL THE SAME PERSON.

As I’ve said time and again, our society is utterly FAILING in all respects! We chase dreams of bigger boats and larger homes while secretly racking up uncounted debts! Rather than strive to improve ourselves, we choose to ridicule our chosen jesters (reality stars) and cheer for the modern demigod (pop star) to fail so that we feel better about our own inadequacies! We are so blind that we don’t see their hubris is our own!

America the beautiful? More like America the corrupt. Not just our politicians, but our citizens and children. The Great Dream itself has warped into a twisted parody of itself, killing the spirit of America and replacing it with a fat slobbering moron, wrapped in their own self delusions.

Will we wake up? Or will the sheep continue until even the memory of this once Great Nation is nothing bust dust?

I don’t know the answer to that, I just know that we had better find out soon, or it will be too late to even try to save the ones worth saving.

The government wants to disarm the population (control the population).

Silly rabbit, facts are for fools.

As I’ve said before, we are breeding loners. Facebook, iphones, tweets keep kids isolated. They don’t even have to go to school anymore, they can do schoolwork online. Kids are isolated and so become depressed. Instead of doing something about it, the parents just give them pills.

Guns don’t kill people. Pills don’t kill people. People kill people. You need to look at why this is happening. The kids are loner psychos before they start taking meds. Longer psychos should not be allowed to take meds.

As a kid i would invite people to join the group.I would see the loner and ask them to come over and be friendly and talk to them.Funny one of my comments was always, hey you need to talk and meet people. You dont want to end up as the crazy guy shooting people from a tower.
Now the kids in school are weird.Boys punch girls. The classrooms are more like an insane asylum. Its bad enough that when i talked to my daughter about home schooling she was all for it.

I think violent video games and TV shows have absolutely nothing to do with it. I think the two working parent household, huge divorce rate, single mother goldmine fostered by the welfare state, increased state interference with parental discipline and the lack of wage increases since the 70s does. People either don’t have the time, energy or are just too goddamn lazy to be parents. Its easier to feed your kids pills when they act out because mommy and daddy split up or they’re not getting attention, etc. You know, things that used to be solved by a good dual parent ass whupping. Now all of these kids that grew up munching on mind altering pills without any long term research on their effect on developing human minds are fucking emotionally numb ticking time bombs.

At least three shot at Texas college

    Published: 22 January, 2013, 22:56

Officials in Houston, Texas say that several people have been shot at a local community college.

Lone Star College’s North Harris campus is on lock-down Tuesday afternoon after a gun fight reportedly broke out between two individuals.

Authorities were alerted by a 911 call at 12:31 pm local time and have since descended on the school and have detained one suspect, reported by MSNBC to be a student at the school. Another person of interest, a black male estimated to be between 18 and 20 years old, was seen fleeing the area, KPRC News reports.

Jed Young, executive director of a school affiliated with the campus, tells CNN that the two suspects are thought to have fired shots at one another, catching passersby in the crossfire. One witness, student Amanda Vasquez, tells CNN that she counted around six shots. Additionally, the network reports that agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have arrived on the scene to assist with local authorities.

The school has since ordered a bulletin that reads, “Students, Faculty and Staff are advised to take immediate shelter where you are. Do not enter the campus until notified further.” As a precaution, other schools in the area have been locked down.

Eyewitnesses tell KTRK News that several gunshots were around 12 noon outside of a classroom. At least three people were wounded in the crossfire and a fourth suffered a heart attack, CNN reports. According to ABC13, however, two of the victim has suffered “multiple gunshot wounds” and are in serious condition and were taken to a local hospital. The one suspect that was detained has also reportedly suffered injuries.

“We know that shots have been fired and we are in a shelter-in-place situation on the campus,” said Vicki Cassidy, manager of media relations for Lone Star College System, tells the Houston Chronicle. “It’s a pretty chaotic scene at this point in time.”

Ok, I started to rant about psychotropic drugs over on the “TBP Got You Down?” thread, which appears to have died. Up front, and I repeat myself here, these drugs are the CAUSE of the explosion of mass shootings in the U.S. over the past 25-30 years since the introduction of Prozac.

It’s not iPhones, not Facebook, and not some larger, complex “social issue,” whatever that is. It’s the fucking drugs, stupid. These drugs are no longer a correlation to mass shootings, they’re the cause. If you disagree, tough shit. But I guarantee if you continue to look elsewhere for a cause, much less a solution, you’re on a fool’s errand.

So what can we do about these drugs? Ideas anyone?

Violent video games and TV shows are as good an answer as Wertham came up with back in 1954.

He was looking for an easy answer, and talking his own book. It’s not as though there’ve not been serious studies on aspects of violent influences and effects. Of course, you can always go with the progressive meme that gun owners are all crazy and that’s why we should take away their toys.

If that were so, “Call of Duty” should have unleashed a bloodbath of pandemic proportions.

Simple, easy answers to complex problems is not a good approach.

    —-SSS

Geez, try not to answer all at once. Let’s try this, for which I will be mercilessly hammered.

Step One: DEA already collects data on a number of legal substances, including the anti-depressant Xanax. So let’s mandate reporting on ALL the black label FDA appoved anti-depressants and have DEA put this data into a firewalled data base.

Step Two: Here’s the tricky and legally controversial part. Physicians AND pharmacies who prescribe and dispense anti-depressant drugs to any patient under the age of 25 (this is the cutoff age that FDA already warns about for anti-depressants) MUST also report the name of the patient, age, and school district and/or institution of higher learning, if either is applicable, to DEA.

(Please don’t lecture me about “privacy” laws, nearly all of which didn’t exist a generation or two ago. Laws can be made, changed, and rescinded.)

Step Three: Each state will determine whether and how to use this data.

Easy peasy. Whaddya think? Standing O or Bronx Cheer?

Your first thumbs up on this, for suggesting a solution. I’ll have to think about that.

Meanwhile, in the search for ‘the cause’ (and for some people it is always singular) one might ask the effect implied violence in society has on the unstable, like:

a Nobel Peace laureate with a “kill list”
drone attacks in various other places
    militarized police SWAT raids
    the commonality of road rage
    Political Correctness
    MSM news reporting
and the dumbing down of government schooling

There’s a start, probably enough virtual gasoline for the smouldering heat of an unstable person’s mind.

“So what can we do about (psychotropic) drugs? Ideas anyone?”
    —-SSS

Holy shit. This is like pulling teeth. Surely, someone besides me on this site must have something to offer on this subject. Let me take it one step further when I said above, in my proposed solution:

“Step Three: Each state will determine whether and how to use this data.”

Ok, let’s envision State A setting up a program to exploit the DEA data on pyschotropic drugs, which includes the patient’s name, age, school district or institution of higher learning (if applicable), and the drug prescribed by the doctor and dispensed by the pharmacy. The state program might look like this.

    1. A small, select number of individuals, who have undergone an appropriate background check, in each school district or institution of higher learning will be granted access to the database.

    2. All employees of the school district or institution of higher learning, plus the public at large, will be made aware of the existence of this database. This is known as transparency.

    3. Each employee of the education community will be briefed regularly (annually?) on the existence of the database and how it is to be used.

    4. Here’s the best (or worst, depending on your viewpoint) part. Teachers and bus drivers, to name two examples, KNOW the kids who are acting strangely through both verbal and non-verbal clues. These kids generally stand out like a sore thumb. How they dress, what they say, who they hang out with (if anyone), what other kids may say about them, shit like that.

    5. So the school employee takes those observations to a person having access to the database and asks them to run the name. If positive, meaning the kid is taking psychotropic drugs, the results are NOT released to anyone except to competent authority determined by the school district.

    6. What happens next, I haven’t the faintest clue, but at least the school district KNOWS about certain childen in their schools who MIGHT, just MIGHT, be the next Columbine or Newtown shooters.

With knowledge somes responsibility. The above puts an enormous legal burden on the education system. So does hiring armed guards (expensive in any district on a tight budget, which is most of them) or arming members of the teaching staff.

And I fully recognize that I’ve suggested “spying” on certain children. Yes, I have. I’ve got some experience with spying, so that shouldn’t come as a shock to regular visitors to TBP.

As KaD suggested above, we need to have a national conversation about psychotropic drugs. Well, of course we do, but the conversation needs to include ideas to fix the problem, not just yak about it.

My now Ex-girlfriend was prescribed Atterall at first, which she stopped after 3 weeks. Amonth later she was prescribed ecipitalophram. She got “sick” on that one. Next her Nurse Practitioner
gave her a script for “Venlafaxine”. My girlfriend of one year [plus[ actually forgot what my last name is [Smith]. She forgot my birthday. She went on a vacation for one week with her girlfriend & her girlfriends husband. She was due back on a Friday, but did not come home till Sunday at 2 am. She is a Schoolbus Driver for handicapped kids. Ever since she started taking this drug she has been acting bizzarre and sometimes violent. She asks people the same thing over and over, etc.. She won’t talk about it at all. She was never depressed, she was mostly a happy go lucky person who smiled all the time. The original problem was that she started having difficulty with her memory. I took her to several Neurologists and had many tests done, from spinal taps, EEG, Neuro-Trax test, and blood tests for dementia. She says she knows what she wants to say, but that the words will not come out. Unfortunately, the “Venlafaxine” seems to have made things worse. We do not even talk anymore. She will be 60 yrs old. I don’t understand “why” her NP gave her this drug, knowing full well that she drives a Schoolbus. [Venlafaxine shows up as PCP in some drug tests], but as long as she has a prescription its okay by the bus company. Something does not seem right…..
