Thus might the next Fourth Turning end in apocalypse – or glory. The nation could be ruined, its democracy destroyed, and millions of people scattered or killed. Or America could enter a new golden age, triumphantly applying shared values to improve the human condition. The rhythms of history do not reveal the outcome of the coming Crisis; all they suggest is the timing and dimension.

I think it’s one of the greats. This singer (Mocedades) is the original. She is fantastic, but I don’t like the arrangement.

I have several albums of Linda Rondstadt, whose family is among the well-connected, ancestral “old guard” here in Tucson. Her brother Peter was a former Tucson Chief of Police, for example. She had a good run with the Stone Ponys and as a solo artist, but her politics are so far out there that she got thown out of a Las Vegas casino for berating Christians while on the casino’s stage during a performance for which she was being paid. Talk about fucking stupid. She’s also gained a lot of weight and might make AWD’s fat fuck list.

Linda Ronstadt’s politics may have been extreme that didn’t prevent her from buying a gorgeous brick mansion in Pacific Heights when she was better known as Linda ‘remake’ Ronstadt doing covers of old R&B songs and demonstrating that no one could sing Roy Orbison songs better than he. I looked it up to see if I could find a picture because I used to sit in the park across the street as my mom’s house was on poorer side of the hill. I found this shot on Trulia but you have to drag the view to the left until the redbrick house on the corner comes into view. That’s the side entrance. The house actually faced the park on Jackson St. not Pierce which was the side street. For some reason the view down the street doesn’t do justice to how steep the hill going down to the bay was. You can only realize just how steep it really is by noting that the cars park perpendicular to the curb. Some of the sidewalks on this side of Pacific Heights actually were stepwalks. Linda’s house sold for $15.500,000 in 2010 but she was long gone by this time. Here
it is if you car to see how a few minor hit records can improve your standard of living.

BTW, while I’m going down memory lane from my salad days in San Francisco in the late 1960′s and early 70′s here was my mom’s house. I lived in the basement and down a few doors ( maybe two or three, I forget) lived Bozz Skaggs. He hadn’t done ‘Fooled Around and Lost in Love’ or whatever
his big hit was yet but I could hear him and his band practicing but that’s not the story. His old lady had a dog and she let it shit on the sidewalk right at the bottom of the steps in front of my house. I stood there and watched her just leave it there and walk back to her house. I didn’t know who she was but I knew I wasn’t going to stand for that so I went back inside and got a spatula and a paper bag, scooped it up and marched my 17 year old ass up to Bozz Skaggs house and rang the bell. She opened the door and I calmly said ‘you dropped something in front of my house’ then dumped the contents of the bag into the entry of her house. She started yelling as I turned and walked away.
Not long afterwards Mr. Skaggs came over to apologize.

I’ve got one more tale too. My stepfather was selling a house he owned out on Lake St. A friend and I are coming out of the kitchen on the way to go get stoned and he has this hippie dude in the living room discussing the property. He introduces us and say this is Mr. Owsley. who was interested in the house so this band he was sponsoring called Blue Cheer could have a place to practice. That would have been Augustus Owsley Stanley the LSD king of the world though, for some reason I recall him being introduced as Stan Owsley. My stepdad mentions that I had lived in D.C and that is where Owsley was from so I mumble something about how much cooler San Francisco is and leave. My stepfather who was pretty hip asked me why I didn’t hang around since this guy was a major figure in the counter culture but what was I do. Ask him if he had any spare LSD I could have?

SAH says:
So In Love by Cole Porter (greatest American Songwriter, besides Stephen Foster)
Strange dear, but true dear,
When I’m close to you, dear,
The stars fill the sky,
So in love with you am I.
Even without you,
My arms fold about you,
You know darling why,
So in love with you am I.
In love with the night mysterious,
The night when you first were there,
In love with my joy delirious,
When I knew that you could care,
So taunt me, and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I’m yours, till I die…..
So in love…. So in love….
So in love with you, my love… am I….

Well, there’s no accounting for tastes, as they say. Lots of good songs posted, imho. Even from the Gen Xer’s.
I was feeling pretty good. This thread made me realize I know at least a hundred great love songs, maybe more. I didn’t even drop down into my country and western repertoire.
But then, I’ve given up hope of ever finding a recording of Milton Carroll doing ” Falling in Love is Like a .45 Slug in the Head.” It appears to be lost in antiquity now. Shame.
