Coroner: Woman Died From Drinking Too Much Coke

American VoicesOpinionISSUE 49•07 • Feb 14, 2013

A coroner in New Zealand has ruled that a 30-year-old woman’s death by cardiac arrest in 2010 was caused by her daily consumption of at least 10 liters of Coke, a claim that The Coca-Cola Company has strongly denied. What do you think?

“You just know health freaks are going to be out there saying you shouldn’t drink 10 liters of Coke a day now.”

Michael McBee –
Pump Mechanic

“I don’t understand why Coca-Cola won’t just admit that its product kills people.”

Joey Finley –
Calculation Reviewer

“If she had only drank 10 liters of Diet Coke a day instead.”

Maritza Rivera –
Elevator Operator

Any pics of this woman? I’m going to guess if she was drinking 10 liters of anything she was just a little on the hefty side. Probably a diabetic with a heart condition. But it must be somebody’s fault (other than hers), right? Not that I have any sympathy for Coke Inc.

10 liters of Coke a day? In the U.S., that kind of habit would put a serious strain on your SNAP card (but could be done, probably is being done).

Not only has Coke made Americans morbidly obese, it has also made the rest of the world obese. What”s 240,000 American lives lost to obesity as long as you can “enjoy” while you’re still alive.

Most of you probably know that Coco-Cola gets its name from its original key ingredients,

—- Cocaine came from the coca leaf; (yup, the original drink contained cocaine)

—- caffeine from the kola nut. (The “k” from kola was replaced with a “c” for marketing purposes)

Coke was originally marketed as a medicine. One of it’s supposed cures? Impotence.

    .
They even put cocaine in cough drops in 1885!! (good thing SSS wasn’t alive back then. oh, wait, … he might have been.)

  14. howard in nyc says:

    hey john:

i drink lots of seltzer. lots. i have for several years now (since i quit beer and other alcohol).

i have worried about possible ill effects, but i have experienced none, as far as i know. i have asked a few doctors (gi specialists and kidney specialists), and done a couple of library/internet searches, but found nothing. the docs i have asked typically don’t give me an emphatic ‘no’, but more like ‘nothing i can think of–the bad stuff is the syrup/sugar/artificial sweetners’. or ‘i’ve never thought about carbonation being good or bad, in and of itself’.

i don’t mean to argue with you; i am sincerely interested if there is information that there is a downside to drinking plain carbonated water. if you got anything, please let me know.

(i always figured the aqueous CO2 would act as a very mild buffer, against the stomach acid. like alka-seltzer does, as a much more highly concentrated load. which is why i ask the kidney docs i encounter–they are a little more emphatic that such a low concentration of CO2 dissolved in water would be easily excreted by the kidneys, if it even reached the bloodstream.)

AWD, hope, any other docs, love to hear.

(another friggin’ vice i will probably have to shed. the drink, the young white girls (stupid restraining order), carbs, now soda.)

  15. SAH says:

Healthy adult kidneys can excrete only 1 liter of water per hour. If someone exceeds this amount of water over a short period of time they can die of water intoxication – which actually happens with alarming frequency (endurance athletes training in the heat; people on crash diets; fraternity hazings; military recruits on forced marches; abusive punishments by parents; contests; etc). People die from drinking as little as 4 liters of pure water over a 2-3 hour time period.

Who drinks a MINIMUM of 10 liters of anything every day? That much of any fluid can kill you… Water, wine, whiskey, espresso, milk (most of the world is lactose intolerant and would die of diarrhea alone from drinking 10 liters of milk in a day)… Yeah the bitch drank 10 liters of coke a day and that is fucking crazy. What is even more crazy is that she managed to do it over a long period without croaking sooner. It would be crazy and dangerous to drink 10 liters a day of anything. Darwinianism at its finest. NO ONE FORCED THIS BITCH TO DRINK IT. When a 4 year old is forced to drink liters of water as punishment, and dies at the hands of an abusive parent or babysitter it is upsetting (and this does happen, too frequently). When a grown but mentally deranged adult chooses to drink themselves to death no one should give a shit. Really.

Whenever I have a Mac attack (about once every other month), I’m all in. Big Mac, large fries, and large Coke. Makes me feel like a useless slug about an hour later, but so good when it’s going down. Otherwise, it’s lots of fruits and veggies with chicken, pork, and fish. And water. Lots of water. All day long. After all, Arizona is Arizona. Sound about right, Doc?

  18. SSS says:

Damnit, I forgot howard in nyc. Anyway, Doctor Howard, I do the same thing you do whenever I have heartburn. Drink a bottle of carbonated water. It helps.

As for SAH’s comments about water, I SIP all day long, so my consumption is probably less than 2 or 3 liters daily. The friggin’ humidity in Arizona is usually so low that your body can dehydrate in a heartbeat. Then the muscle cramps kick in big time. Have you ever stood over a 3-foot putt and your toes start to cramp? You’ve got about a 1% chance of making that putt. Pure hell, I tell you.

It’s the phosphoric acid in Coke that does the most damage. It eats away the lining of your stomach and can damage your kidneys. Phosphates eat away your bones as well.

When I was working as a cement mason I would drink up to three gallons of water in 8 hours on a hot day. I used to fill three, one gallon jugs with water, freeze two and refrigerate the other for a days work.
