@RMB – actually, ‘transvestite’ is a perfectly legitimate term and is NOT at all synonymous with the terms ‘transsexual’ or ‘transgender’.
Transvestite comes from the Latin VESTIRE which simply means ‘to dress’ or ‘to clothe’… Making our definition of transvestite ‘someone who dresses in the manner of the opposite gender’. Most transvestites are heterosexual, identify with their genetic gender, and do not have the mental illness issue of gender dysmorphia. One might even argue that in the modern Western world where women have abandoned traditional female clothing such as skirts and dresses, and have largely adopted male clothing such as pants and suits, the majority of heterosexual, XX chromosome females in the West are now literal ‘transvestites’. Other examples of transvestism would be things such as when football teams dress up as cheerleaders and cheerleaders dress up as football players and silly stuff like that. Some heterosexual men also engage in transvestism as a sexual fetish.
The terms ‘transgender’ and ‘transsexual’ identify those who have the mental illness of Gender Dysmorphia. In other words, they believe they *are* the opposite gender. By definition, a transsexual who dresses opposite to their biological gender does not believe they are engaging in transvestism because they believe they are dressing as their *real* gender.
Transvestites DO NOT seek sex reassignment surgery because they are not confused as to what gender they actually are. Transsexuals seek sex reassignment surgery because they believe their genetic chromosomal gender is a *mistake*.
In short, transvestism is a behavior while transsexualism is a mental illness.

There’s actually a not-insignificant amount of scientific evidence that supports the reality of transsexuality. Furthermore, it has been shown time and time and time and time again that gender dysphoria is not a psychological issue, as psychotherapy does not cure it in the vast majority of cases.
But I’ll leave you to continue to determine the identities of people for them, because it totally makes sense that you would have a much better grasp of the identities of people you don’t even know than the actual people themselves.

I’m guessing that the nuances of political correctness concerning the proper way to refer to “transgender people” are pretty much lost on the DHS.
Likewise on TBPer’s, for whom the term “PC” alone is enough to make many of us want to bitch-slap the nearest handy liberal.
I’m not sure I’d call transexuals mentally ill, but their existence makes me ask all kinds of questions, and I’m tempted to jump to what seems to me to be some fairly obvious conclusions.
Like, what happens to the sexuality of male humans over time, when their maleness is denied. when they have no social structure that rewards them for being successful hunters, successful fathers,or successful warriors, and makes it difficult for them even find sexual partners without paying substantial social penalties for it?
When, on the other hand, if they could just flip to the other gender, they could garner certain gender related benefits and play roles that give them more personal opportunities in the modern American/European culture.
It might be moot to ask these questions were it not for modern technology, which makes it possible to come close to achieving in reality what, in another time, might have remained a fantasy.
So…the point I’m trying to make is that there is a way to see both cross-dressing transvestites and transexuals in a cultural anthropological perspective…in which they might each be seen as having the same basic subconscious motivations, but existing as different points along a spectrum of behaviors caused by the same societal forces.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Furthermore, it has been shown time and time and time and time again that those are psychological issues, which psychotherapy does not cure it in the vast majority of cases. The inability of psychotherapy to cure a mental illness in no way ‘proves’ that it isn’t a mental illness. It may not be PC, but it is quite clear that transsexualism is a mental problem, since the problem is in the MIND of the gender dysmorphia person (who generally have perfectly functional and ‘normal’ bodies of their chromosomal gender – it is in fact their mind that is abhorent and therefore the problem is a mental one).
Furthermore, surgical intervention does not ‘cure’ transsexualism either, as no medical intervention exists which can turn a man into a woman or a woman into a man. Women can have their breasts and uterus removed, men can have breast implants and have their penises removed – this in no way ‘cures’ transsexualism as they are never able to actually be their desired gender. Surgery merely takes their healthy, functional body and changes it into a non-functional mutilated one. Their gender is not biologically changed. If this makes some people happy to modify their bodies in this way, good for them. It is my right to view them as mentally ill freaks – just as I view other body modification afficianados to be mentally ill (facial and neck tattoos, ‘horn’ implants on tops of heads, extreme piercings, extreme plastic surgery etc). To each his/her own, but yes I have just as much right to judge people to be mentally unstable freaks as they have a right to be mentally unstable freaks.
Regardless, my main issue with you was your abuse of language. Transvestite and Transsexual are not synonyms, and I’m sick to death of the misuse of language and general ignorance of word meanings and definitions. This is the outcome of removing Classical education and the study of Latin from the schools. It especially disgusts me when the motivation for abusing language is misguided political correctness.
@Zara – ah yes, little Silverton, OR. You chose a fine example of a transvestite – that mayor is indeed one who ‘dresses in the manner of the opposite gender’ while being in no way transsexual.
