Gallon of gas was 2.22$ back then? That seems rather high, can any of you useless Boomers confirm this?

All of the financial numbers have been adjusted for inflation to 2011 levels.

The actual cost of a gallon of gasoline was 32 cents.

Thank the Federal Reserve for the multiple of 11 increase in prices.

Gas price in 1966 was about $0.35 cents a gallon. I remember dad filling the big old Bonneville for six bucks.

I was pumping gas in 1979 as a senior in college …. it still wasn’t even a dollar back then. I think gas topped a dollar for the first time around 1980 / 1981.

More old geezers, longer living old geezers, and exponentially more money spent on geezers and their meds. When will people learn to do the right thing once they’ve outlived their usefulness? Good thing boomers aren’t going to live very long; obesity is wiping them out.

January 3 – The first Acid Test is conducted at the Fillmore, San Francisco. (birth of the hippies)

“A B-52 bomber collides with a KC-135 Stratotanker over Spain, dropping three 70-kiloton hydrogen bombs near the town of Palomares, and one into the sea, in the 1966 Palomares B-52 crash.”

January 12 – United States President Lyndon Johnson states that the United States should stay in South Vietnam until Communist aggression there is ended.

That asshole Johnson is even responsible for daylight savings time:
April 13 – United States president Lyndon Johnson signs the 1966 Uniform Time Act, dealing with daylight saving time.

The CPI in 1966 according to the BLS was 32.4

    The CPI today is 229.6

Even using the government manipulated inflation figures, the USD has lost 86% of its purchasing power since 1966.

But don’t worry. Bernanke says inflation is well contained. One of the Federal Reserve’s mandates is stable prices. How are they doing?

    from wiki —

The first national observance of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States was in 1918, to save energy during World War I.

There was no national rule regarding DST. Individual states, cities, and towns could start or end it at any point. This led to nationwide confusion, as the country became a patchwork of different observances. Finally, in 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, establishing DST as beginning on the last Sunday in April and ending on the last Sunday of October.

So, let me get this straight…

Our population is larger, life expectancy has increased, more women are working and productivity (measured in GDP per capita) has surged. Yet we’re clearly addicted to prescription drugs and more people than ever are living in poverty.

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to put in the top song of the time? Why not housing costs? Why not per capita disposable income, percent spent on food versus entertainment, or something that really shows the decline in society?

1966 was an outstanding year. I graduated from college and got married 9 days later.

Right you are, Think Tank. “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees absolutely sucks. But take a look at the video from today’s top tune, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. It’s hilarious. She falls for some skinny guy and finally gets his attention. But he ends up passing his phone number to, wait for it, a male member of her band.

But let’s see. Someone pissed me off with his comments in this thread. Now who was it? Let me scroll up and see. Ah yes, it was AWD who said, “More old geezers, longer living old geezers, and exponentially more money spent on geezers and their meds. When will people learn to do the right thing once they’ve outlived their usefulness?”

WTF does that mean? Assisted suicide? Voluntary suicide? Both? Sure sounds like it.

WTF does “outlived their usefullness” mean? Who gets to define “outlived” and “usefullness”? You personally, your family, your community, or a government panel formed under Obamacare? What is the penalty for inordinate longevity and/or uselessness? Sounds like death to me. Who administers the sentence?

That was a scary statement you made, AWD. I didn’t like it.

Your either the only one who read it, or the only one who realized what it meant. I was hoping for some response (even some TBP’ers may be brain dead). Glad to see you’re paying attention.

As to the meaning of the comment, if Obama and his minions have their way, they will be deciding who is useful and who isn’t. Death panels. I took an oath, however, and I will honor it. Fuck Obama.

The way I figure it, my Boomer generation will be unable to obtain all but the most basic health services when we get to be old weak geezers. Forget the hip replacements and coronary bypasses when you’re 84. Those who are dooming themselves to multiple chronic illnesses in their final years by persisting in unhealthy lifestyles now will find little help unless they have the means to pay for it themselves. Obamawon’tcare.

    chupacabra

Translation from Spanish, “goat sucker,” from the verb chupar (to suck) and cabra (goat). Spanish speakers also use the word to mean something quite different. Replace the word goat with an obscene four-letter word for penis, and you’ll know what I mean.
