I remember this song on the radio ALL the time one summer while attending a YMCA camp. Still love it.

Things I found out today I never knew before …

The song was inspired by the number of keys on Pinera’s Rhodes piano. Pinera said, “Okay, I need a first word.” And what came into my head was 73. I liked the rhythm, and I went, “73 men sailed up, from the San Francisco Bay.” … The song sort of just wrote itself from there.”

So, it appears for the most part that this is a whimsical song … not necessarily one with “deeper” or “hidden” meanings.

However, since this song is from 1968, more than a few people believe this song is about drug use and the counterculture movement. I reject that argument. I have heard the same about virtually every song from that era …. and it gets tiring.

More than a few people think the song is a reference to the 1968 USS Pueblo incident. I also totally reject that interpretation.

Lastly, this was the only hit for Blues Image. The group dissolved soon after, with Pinera joining Iron Butterfly and Skip Konte going to Three Dog Night.
