Thousands of Xcel customers locked out of thermostats during ‘energy emergency’

Via The Denver Channel

DENVER — During the dog days of summer, it’s important to keep your home cool. But when thousands of Xcel customers in Colorado tried adjusting their thermostats Tuesday, they learned they had no control over the temperatures in their own homes.

Temperatures climbed into the 90s Tuesday, which is why Tony Talarico tried to crank up the air conditioning in his partner’s Arvada home.

“I mean, it was 90 out, and it was right during the peak period,” Talarico said. “It was hot.”

That’s when he saw a message on the thermostat stating the temperature was locked due to an “energy emergency.”

“Normally, when we see a message like that, we’re able to override it,” Talarico said. “In this case, we weren’t. So, our thermostat was locked in at 78 or 79.”

Denver Prepares For Biggest Snowstorm In More Than Century

We flew into Denver last weekend to visit my son in Loveland for the first time since his 2019 wedding. You couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was 65 and sunny the four days we were there. We were able to go hiking in a national park and drive up to Estes Park on the winding scenic Route 34. This weekend the forecast for Loveland is 28 inches of snow. We really lucked out this time.

While much of the country has experienced warmer temperatures this week (something we outlined here & here), a much-needed change from last month’s polar vortex blast that nearly collapsed Texas’ power grid, a monster storm could strike Denver and surrounding areas this weekend.

AccuWeather meteorologists continue to track the weekend winter storm, making its rounds in southern California mid-week and set to arrive in southern Colorado late Friday and dump snow across the state through late Sunday or early Monday morning.

Several major snowstorms are expected to dump heavy snow across the Rockies, the Plains, and into the Midwest this week as cold Arctic air blankets those regions in the last days of October.

RAMBLINGS FROM THE ROCKIES

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.” ― John Muir

We just got back from a family vacation in Colorado visiting my oldest son, who graduated college last year and immediately moved to Colorado to start his life. The trip was fun, enlightening, exhausting, and a lesson in how the easy money policies of the Fed result in mal-investment and the impoverishment of the middle class.

I don’t want to be a downer, as our week in Colorado was a fantastic journey where we witnessed some of the most stunning panoramas and beautiful awe inspiring vistas of our lives. My son is in the perfect place, as he loves mountain biking, hiking, snow boarding, camping, and hockey. After a week in Colorado, you realize why it is the least obese state in the union. It’s a perfect setting for those who enjoy the outdoors, as Colorado has 300 days of sunshine per year, along with the most snow per year.

I’ve only flown twice in the last eight years, so I wasn’t looking forward to getting molested by some obese low IQ TSA thug. Our flight was early on Wednesday morning and to my surprise the TSA line was non-existent. Getting a body scan still creeps me out. I hope my body scan grossed them out. This massive over-reaction to terrorism has stopped no attacks and cost citizens hundreds of billions and the loss of freedoms and liberties.
