Major Earthquake Rattles Hawaii, Triggering More Volcanic Eruptions

A day after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted, sending magma bubbling up through cracks in the earth and forcing hundreds of people to flee, the US Geological Survey on Friday recorded a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in nearly the exact same location as a deadly 1975 quake that caused the deaths of two people, according to Agence France-Presse.

The quake triggered more eruptions by opening up five magma vents in the area, CNN reported. A separate, smaller 5.4 magnitude quake was recorded earlier in the day, as well as a swarm of smaller aftershocks. USGS said it fears the quakes could trigger more eruptions.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Deadliest earthquake in history rocks China – 1556

Via History.com

On this day in 1556, an earthquake in Shaanxi, China, kills an estimated 830,000 people. Counting casualties is often imprecise after large-scale disasters, especially prior to the 20th century, but this disaster is still considered the deadliest of all time.

Magnitude 7.9 quake off Alaska prompts tsunami warning

Via MSN

ANCHORAGE, Jan 23 – A magnitude 7.9 earthquake hit the Gulf of Alaska in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting warnings of a possible tsunami down the Canadian and U.S. west coast and as far away as Hawaii.

Local radio on the Alaskan island of Kodiak, close to the epicenter, urged listeners to move away from coastal areas.

“This is a tsunami warning. this is not a drill. Please get out to higher ground,” said the announcer on KMXT public radio. “If you are on the flats, get up on one of the hills … Just go high.”

“Supervolcano” Concerns Rise After Montana Hit By Strongest Earthquake In 20 Years

Tyler Durden's picture

Following a swarm of over 1100 earthquakes recorded in the Yellowstone caldera over the past month, prompting scientists to voice concerns about a dormant Yellowstone “Supervolcano” slowly waking up, overnight these concerns escalated after a strong M5.8 earthquake hit western Montana early on Thursday morning – the strongest quake to hit the area in the past 20 years – the U.S. Geological Survey reported, with Reuters adding that the tremor was felt hundreds of miles away, from Missoula to Billings and some surrounding states.

The quake appears to be the largest to hit Montana since a slightly weaker M5.6 struck outside of Dillon a dozen years ago. By comparison, the state’s largest quake which struck the West Yellowstone region 58-years ago was 7.2 magnitude.

Powerful M7.3 Earthquake Strikes Japan Off Fukushima, Tsunami Warning Issued

Tyler Durden's picture

A powerful earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale has struck Japan, 156 miles from Tokyo, off the coast of ukushima, the site of the 2011 natural disaster and tsunami that resulted in the worst nuclear power plant disaster since Chernobyl.

Worst of all, a warning for a possible 3 meter Tsunami in Fukushima has been issued according to media reports.

  • JAPAN ISSUES WARNING FOR POSSIBLE 3M TSUNAMI IN FUKUSHIMA

The Tsunami is expected to hit Fukushima within minutes.

According to Japan broadcaster NHK, TEPCO has advised that it is checking for abnormalities at nuclear plant in Fukushima; the plant has stopped.

The quake headlines have sparked notable selling in USDJPY.

Tsunami Warning Issued After Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Quake Strikes New Zealand

I hope all of our TBP New Zealanders are safe. Let us know how it looks from your perspective.

Tyler Durden's picture

A major earthquake whose, initial reported magnitude of M7.5 was initially lowered to M6.6, only to rise up to M7.8 in the latest USGS estimate, struck central New Zealand northeast of Christchurch just after midnight, or 12:02am local time on Monday, (1102 GMT Sunday), the U.S. Geological Survey said, generating a tsunami that hit the northeast coast of the South Island.

The quake – which had a shallow depth of just 10km like the recent destructive earthquakes to strike Italy – was centered centered 46km from the town of Amberley with about 2,000 people, and 70km from the town of Kaiapoi with 10,000 residents, according to the USGS. It was felt throughout most of the country.

The quake took place 91km from the town of Christchurch which was struck by a powerful earthquake back in 2011. At least 185 people were killed and hundreds injured after the 6.3 magnitude quake hit the town. The quake shook the captial city Wellington, where sirens were heard.

BIG ONE TO HIT SAN FRANCISCO ANY DAY NOW

USGS Scientist: Major Quake On Hayward Fault Expected ‘Any Day Now’

(CBS SF) — The fault that produced a 4.0-magnitude earthquake in Fremont early Tuesday morning is expected to produce a major earthquake “any day now” and Bay Area residents should be prepared, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist said.

The 2:41 a.m. earthquake on the border of Fremont and Union City occurred on the Hayward Fault at a depth of 5 miles. The epicenter was at a spot just north of the intersection of Niles Canyon Road and Mission Boulevard.

The quake caused some BART delays early Tuesday while work crews checked the tracks, but appears to have caused no major damage. At least 13 smaller quakes or aftershocks had been reported near the same location as of 6:42 a.m., the largest of which was a 2.7-magnitude at 2:56 a.m.

While damage from the quake was minimal, scientists warn that a much larger one is expected on the Hayward Fault, which extends from San Pablo Bay in the north to Fremont in the south and passes through heavily populated areas including Berkeley, Oakland, Hayward and Fremont.

The last big earthquake on the fault, estimated to have a 6.8-magnitude, occurred in 1868, according to the USGS.

Here Comes Godzilla

I’ll bet most here have Fukushima fatigue.

Well, last month there was an 8.5 earthquake in Japan. Today there was a 7.8 that made buildings sway in Tokyo.   Article here

An earthquake that further damages Fukushima will have dire consequences for a huge swath of planet earth. If you prep … prep for that also, if even possible.

The Real Story

What’s Really Going on at Fukushima?

by ROBERT HUNZIKER

Fukushima’s still radiating, self-perpetuating, immeasurable, and limitless, like a horrible incorrigible Doctor Who monster encounter in deep space.

Fukushima will likely go down in history as the biggest cover-up of the 21st Century. Governments and corporations are not leveling with citizens about the risks and dangers; similarly, truth itself, as an ethical standard, is at risk of going to shambles as the glue that holds together the trust and belief in society’s institutions. Ultimately, this is an example of how societies fail.

Tens of thousands of Fukushima residents remain in temporary housing more than four years after the horrific disaster of March 2011. Some areas on the outskirts of Fukushima have officially reopened to former residents, but many of those former residents are reluctant to return home because of widespread distrust of government claims that it is okay and safe.

Part of this reluctance has to do with radiation’s symptoms. It is insidious because it cannot be detected by human senses. People are not biologically equipped to feel its power, or see, or hear, touch or smell it (Caldicott). Not only that, it slowly accumulates over time in a dastardly fashion that serves to hide its effects until it is too late.

Chernobyl’s Destruction Mirrors Fukushima’s Future

As an example of how media fails to deal with disaster blowback, here are some Chernobyl facts that have not received enough widespread news coverage: Over one million (1,000,000) people have already died from Chernobyl’s fallout.

Additionally, the Rechitsa Orphanage in Belarus has been caring for a very large population of deathly sick and deformed children. Children are 10 to 20 times more sensitive to radiation than adults.

What Exactly Is Going On At Lake Mead?

Tyler Durden's picture

Following our exposure of the plunge in Lake Mead water levels post Friday’s earthquake, officials were quick to point out that the drop was “due to erroneous meter readings” – which in itself is odd given we have not seen such an aberration before in the measurements. The data today shows a super surge in the Lake Mead water level – which, even more mysteriously, indicates from pre-earthquake to now, the Lake has risen by the most in a 3-day-period in years (as long as we have found history). How was this level ‘manufactured’ you ask? Simple – discharge flows from the Hoover Dam were curtailed dramatically. We are sure there is a simple explanation for all this…

Yesterday we noted the plunge in Lake Mead water levels…

Officials said – do not worry, the readings are faulty…

Lake Mead’s elevation has NOT dropped to 1,068 feet. Some inaccurate data was posted online. We are at 1,077 feet. http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/g4000/hourly/hourly.html

Which resulted in this miracle…
