The latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that Hurricane Florence is on the verge of becoming a monster storm, which strengthened rapidly overnight as it continued to gain strength over the Atlantic, 625 miles southeast of Bermuda.
Florence had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and was moving west-northwest at nine mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane, the NHC said. An increase in maximum sustained wind speed is expected over the next several days, as government officials from the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic on Monday were preparing for a direct hit later this week.

When I was a kid, it was part of the holiday season to see politicians participating in the rituals of Christmas. The President would show up at a church somewhere to participate in a Christian mass, even if he was not a member of that particular sect. The exception was that non-Catholics would not take communion at a Catholic mass, out of respect to Catholics. Otherwise, it was considered a sign of respect for leaders to show up at a church at times like Christmas.
Similarly, political leaders would show up at a military memorial on veterans holidays to lay a wreath, say a prayer and demonstrate a proper reverence. On the 50th anniversary of D-Day, Ronald Reagan made a week out of showing his respect for the men and women, who saved Europe from herself. Even communist mayors of progressive American cities knew to show respect to veterans on those holidays. The point was for the people to see that these public figures were pious and shared our fidelity to the cultural institutions of society.
Public acts of piety by leaders are a part of settled society and an integral part of political leadership. Scipio Africanus, the great Roman general, is famous to modern people for defeating Hannibal at Zama. In his day, he was famous to his contemporaries for his great displays of public piety and his use of them to win the support of the people in order to defeat his political enemies. Roman emperors invested a great deal of wealth and time into public acts of piety, building great temples and holding elaborately expensive public events. Public piety is a feature of human society.
This is as bad as it gets.
A North Carolina state trooper shot and killed 29-year-old Daniel Harris — who was not only unarmed, but deaf and mute — just feet from his home, over a speeding violation. According to early reports from neighbors who witnessed the shooting this past Thursday night, Harris was shot and killed “almost immediately” after exiting his vehicle.
He appeared to be trying to communicate with the officer via sign language.
“They should’ve de-escalated and been trained to realize that this is an entirely different situation,” neighbor Mark Barringer said. “You’re pulling someone over who is deaf, they are handicapped. To me, what happened is totally unacceptable.”

The boycott against the state of North Carolina over its refusal to allow transgenders to use bathrooms of the opposite sex has grown beyond a few celebrities and companies, and now includes whole cities.
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported that a board of L.A. city supervisors voted to “suspend all travel to the state of North Carolina for the conduct of county business unless the chief executive officer determines that the failure to authorize such travel would seriously harm the county’s interests.”
The bill came at the request of supervisors Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, the first openly gay person to serve on the board.
“Governments come along behind and say ‘We’ll do our part. We have power; we must use it,’ and that is what we are attempting to do today,” said Kuehl.
Solis welcomed the ban, saying that her identity as a Latina made her feel a certain affinity towards other minority groups.
“The value is that we all stand together, because if one falls, we all fall,” said Solis.
The one “no” vote came from Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who lambasted the measure as a “politically correct agenda.”
“The politically correct agenda is full of hypocrisy,” said Antonovich. “The corporations, (PayPal, Google) and entertainers (Bruce Springsteen), and others are calling for the boycott of North Carolina — however, they are more than happy to entertain or conduct business in countries which support and sponsor the persecution, oppression, and violence against individuals based on gender, religion, and sexual orientation.”
Earlier in the month, the city of Los Angeles already voted to stop doing official business with North Carolina.

Clovers like ALL CAPS. It is their way of temper-tantruming. Invariably, when their most sacred totem – THE LAW – is scoffed.
North Carolina has gone full Clover.
Speed limits WILL be obeyed, to the letter. Or else.
Unleash the hounds.
Well, unleash the North Carolina State Police – whose primary mission, it appears, is not the apprehension of thieves, rapists and murderers and other people who’ve actually caused harm to others but rather to enforce the speed limit on North Carolina highways.
North Carolina’s Department of Transportation – the Hauptquartier of the state police – is launching an uber-Clover unternehmen (I use the German for the same reason that “Homeland” sounds much more right when it is rendered in the original, der Heimat… as in, for instance, Heimatsicherheitsdeinst… look it up.. you may be interested to learn the literal translation, as well as its prior usage) to filch as many dollars from as many “speeders” as possible.

Of all of the undercover investigations I’ve conducted, this was by far the easiest.
They were willing to pass out fraudulently obtained ballots like it was Halloween candy.
With almost three-quarters-of-a-million inactive voters and no voter ID law in place, we could have turned the election results for most major candidates in the state.

James O’Keefe is no stranger to this site. In August, I posted another one of his video stunts in the piece: Video of the Day – Man Easily Crosses U.S.-Mexico Border Dressed as Osama bin Laden, which you should check out if you missed it the first time around.
Well Mr. O’Keefe is back, and it proves that any motivated political operative of either corrupt, phony political party can easily swing U.S. elections via simple fraud.
