St. Louis Prepares For “Catastrophic Event” As Underground Fire Nears Nuclear Waste Cache

Beneath the surface of a St. Louis-area landfill lurk two things that should never meet: a slow-burning fire and a cache of Cold War-era nuclear waste, separated by no more than 1,200 feet.

As AP reports,

Government officials have quietly adopted an emergency plan in case the smoldering embers ever reach the waste, a potentially “catastrophic event” that could send up a plume of radioactive smoke over a densely populated area near the city’s main airport.

Although the fire at Bridgeton Landfill has been burning since at least 2010, the plan for a worst-case scenario was developed only a year ago and never publicized until this week, when St. Louis radio station KMOX first obtained a copy.

But don’t panic, as officials say it is “contained”…

Attack on Bosnian woman near Bevo Mill is called a hate crime

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson has called in the FBI to help investigate what he is calling a hate crime because a woman assaulted by three black teens is Bosnian.

The Friday morning attack occurred in the Bevo Mill neighborhood where earlier this week a Bosnian man was killed with a hammer by a group of teens.

In Friday’s case, the woman, 26, told police that she was driving in the 4600 block of Lansdowne Avenue about 5:25 a.m. when three men in their late teens to early 20s walked in front of her vehicle.

When the woman attempted to drive around the young men, at least one of them pulled a gun and ordered her to stop. One of the men struck the windshield with an object police said could have been a crowbar. The woman was pulled from the vehicle while another of the men opened the passenger door and went through the woman’s purse, saying it was empty. One of the men threw her cellphone to the ground and stomped on it.

One of the men asked where the woman was from. She said she was European.

“You’re a (expletive) liar. You’re Bosnian. I should just kill you now,” Dotson said of the woman’s account.

Based on that comment, he said, police are labeling the assault as a hate crime.

The woman was pushed to the ground and kicked before the attackers fled. A passer-by told police the woman was found unconscious. She declined to be taken to a hospital for treatment, saying she would go later.

Dotson said designating the attack as a hate crime could lead to additional charges and prison time. Suspect descriptions are scant and he is urging the community to help identify the men.

The incident occurred five days after Zemir Begic, a 32-year-old Bosnian man, was killed in the 4200 block of Itaska Street. About 1:15 a.m. Sunday, he was walking to his car with his fiancée and two others when four teens confronted the group. At least one of them struck Begic with a hammer. He suffered injuries to his face, head and abdomen. Police said they have no evidence to believe Begic was targeted because of his race, although some in the community have doubts.

Robert Joseph Mitchell, 17, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Two other suspects, 15 and 16, are in custody. Another suspect remained at large Friday. At least two of the teens are black, and one is Hispanic.

On Friday, 19 organizations, many that work directly with Bosnians and other refugees, released a statement, urging police to strengthen their presence in all parts of the city including the Bevo Mill neighborhood. Dotson said he is increasing foot patrols and the presence of unmarked vehicles in Bevo Mill.

“Bosnians know the consequences of division and violence as well as anyone in our community,” the statement reads. “Let us build upon that experience as we repair our broken hearts and divided city.”

Have you seen the mainstream media reporting this ghastly murder of a white man by black thugs in St. Louis? Has Obama or Holder held a press conference? Notice how the liberal corporate media refers to the killers as juveniles. This certainly isn’t a hate crime, right? Just a white guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m sure it was a coincidence that it was a white guy beaten to death by feral black yuts. Were Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson marching with the protestors last night? Will they be holding vigil with his young widow?

The hypocrisy of the media and government leaders is breathtaking to behold. It is only the alternative media where you have a chance of obtaining the truth. When a white cop kills a criminal black teenager we have a national tragedy. When a gang of roving blacks beats an innocent white man to death with hammers it is a misunderstanding that needs to be suppressed from being reported.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has released mobile phone footage that seems to be at odds with parts of its story surrounding the officer-involved shooting of Kajieme Powell in the weeks after Michael Brown’s death.

According to St. Louis Public Radio, the police released the video Wednesday evening as part of an effort to be more transparent when it comes to violent incidents involving law enforcement. In addition to the cell phone footage, the department also released security camera footage of the alleged robbery, as well as the two 911 calls made to police.

Police were first called to the scene – less than four miles away from the spot Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old, was killed – when a local store owner reported the 25-year-old Powell for stealing drinks and snacks. A separate woman, meanwhile, also reported Powell for allegedly having a knife in his pocket and acting strangely.

As RT noted previously, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said Powell was brandishing a knife and ignored commands to drop it. Dotson said Powell approached the officers carrying the knife “in an aggressive manner,” with an overhand grip, and was shot when he came within three or four feet of police.

In the newly released video, Powell can be seen walking in the direction of and yelling at the two responding officers, telling them to shoot him. However, his hands look to be at his side while this is happening, and he also appears to be further than three or four feet from police when they decide to shoot him.

Powell had a well-known history of mental illness, though it’s unclear how, if at all, that played into police decision-making. He was shot about 15-20 seconds after police arrived, about nine times total.

Speaking to CNN, Dotson acknowledged that Powell’s hands were down when he was shot, but said the man was brandishing a knife and walking towards officers at a close enough range that the knife was considered a lethal weapon.

“The officers did what I think you or I would do, they protected their life in that situation,” Dotson said, as quoted by the Huffington Post. He mentioned that tasers aren’t “100 percent” successful, concluding, “In a lethal situation, they used lethal force.”

Previously, Dotson also pointed to the safety of his officers as the most important concern.

“I think officer safety is the number one issue,” he said on Tuesday. “I think you have the right to protect yourself and defend yourself” if someone approaches you with a knife and gets too close.
