This is very simple. Anyone who has read this blog for the last couple years knows how I feel about the Catholic Church and their cover-up of priests fucking little boys. My unequivical position has been and continues to be that anyone within the Catholic Church heirarchy, up to and including the Pope, that knew about children being molested and fucked by predator priests and did not report it to the police is as guilty as the predator and should spend the rest of their lives in the general population of a prison.
Joe Paterno and the President of Penn State University were told that Sandusky molested a young boy in the showers of their lockeroom, 9 years ago. They did not report it to the police. Sandusky then went on to molest and fuck many young boys over the following years. Paterno & the President of Penn State are as guilty as Sandusky and should go to jail. They knowingly chose to protect the “reputation” of Penn State at the expense of innocent children whose lives have been ruined by this monster. They made the wrong fucking choice and they deserve to go to jail.

Few things are quite as pathetic as a revered hero who stays around too long and suddenly becomes embroiled in a scandal that threatens to undo the saintly image most everyone expected he would take to his grave.
But that is exactly what octogenarian Joe Paterno faces only a few short weeks after becoming the coach with the most victories in college football history.
It turns out that the longtime mastermind of the Pennsylvania State University’s elite gridiron program reportedly knew for nine years or so but did nothing about the degrading sexual activities of one of his most trusted assistants, his former defensive coordinator who was arrested over the weekend on charges of abusing eight boys over 15 years. Jerry Sandusky had been running a foundation to help needy children.
What in the world was Paterno thinking?
I must confess here that I never have been a fan of his. I thought among other things that he didn’t have the grace to give the proper credit for his team’s successes to those who for most of the last years actually have been running things.
But my real antipathy toward him stems from an incident involving my youngest son, who as a budding player was invited to Paterno’s elite summer camp and came back angry and dismayed to report being snubbed when he and other attendees approached the great man to say hello.
If the Pennsylvania Aattorney General’s report can be believed, and there is no reason not to, Paterno was informed in 2002 by a graduate assistant who said he saw the defensive leader, Sandusky, abusing a 10-year-old boy in the locker room.
Paterno informed the athletic director but no one told the proper authorities. It seems obvious the school was more concerned about the potential damage to its program than the welfare of the youngsters. They reportedly just told him not to bring anymore kids around the football program.
That callous disregard can be expected to cost the university big time. Two of the officials, the vice president for finance and the athletic director, allegedly have been charged with perjury and failing to report a crime. Meanwhile, the university’s president foolishly issued a statement supporting the two officials.
Paterno has not been charged, but the impact of this is nearly as bad for him as if he had been, considering the depravity of the situation and his failure to personally take the case to law enforcement officials.
I couldn’t help but compare this to a widely reported case involving a 26-year-old man convicted in Florida the other day of having pornographic images of children on his computer. It was his first arrest, he had no record of any kind, and there was no evidence that he had ever been accused of molesting any one, child or adult. He was given life imprisonment without parole solely on the basis of having downloading the images.
He had turned down an offer to plead guilty in exchange for a 20-year term. So the prosecutor filed more serious charges. His sentence was exactly the same as is expected for a murderer recently convicted in an unbelievably brutal slaying of a yoga-store employee here.
If he had abused or molested a child, the young man would have been given a much lighter sentence. The judge’s startling ruling, based on the argument that anyone downloading these images is guilty of furthering the depraved child porn industry, is being appealed.
In the Penn State case, Sandusky faces a long time in prison if convicted. It may be a life sentence, given that he is 67. He is out on $100,000 bond. I would have made it $1 million.
But the troubling question remains as to the responsibility, morally and legally, of those who aided and abetted his despicable actions by remaining silent.
No mitigating explanation of any kind would be acceptable from any of them. There might be a tendency to excuse Paterno because of his age. But if his mental faculties are good enough to run a major college football program, they’re good enough to know right from wrong.
How sad for the coach who has stayed around too long.

You learn a lot about people when they have to make tough choices. When told about a child being raped in his locker room by one of this coaches and friends, Paterno didn’t ask about the child. He went to his boss and reported ‘something’ about Sandusky and ‘horseplay’ or some bullshit. He then washed his hands of the matter. Watching Penn State operate this week, one realizes that that the rape of children is secondary to the university when measured against the football program. The coverup is huge and the scandal is unprecedented – the worst in college sports history. Even today, the administration refuses to act. Shame forever on Penn State.

Another example of how taking the short term “win”, in this case covering up for a pedophile to win football games, totally fucks up the long term gain, in this case the reputation of Paterno who would otherwise be a football coaching freakin’ legend.

Maybe him and Joe were having a fling for 9 years. Sandusky dressed up like a women, and Joe can barely see. Imagine the horror when Joe found out it was a man.

While I was waiting on my massage yesterday, I saw the article about Penn St. in the USA Today. My first thought was Admin was going to have a fucking aneurysm. When I tuned into TBP this morning I was not surprised to see this post, or his take on it.
I think it is perfect symmetry; however, that Jo Pa, one week removed from breaking the Div I record for lifetime wins, may have all of that glory and honor shredded by this horrific story. To me that is reaping what you have sown. He brushed it under the rug and forgot about it for his own short term selfish gain. A virtuous man would have protected the children, and by and large after a year of disruption and healing would have had a new defensive coordinator, a sterling program, and the surety to all fans and parents that his priorities for his program were rock solid.
Now, if the allegations are true, he will find himself drug through the slime, fired, and maybe in jail. The best part is that his whole life’s work will be essentially destroyed. He could have embezzled a 100 million dollars and after a few years people would forget it over the magnificence of his accomplishment as a coach and leader. But turn a blind eye to ass raping a 10 year old boy (and maybe many more over 15 years) and there is no forgiveness.

Penn State Said to Be Planning Paterno’s Exit Amid Scandal
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials.
The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.
Paterno was to have held a news conference Tuesday but the university canceled it less than an hour before it was scheduled to start.
At age 84 and with 46 seasons as the Penn State head coach behind him, Paterno’s extraordinary run of success — one that produced tens of millions of dollars for the school and two national championships, and that established him as one of the nation’s most revered leaders, will end with a stunning and humiliating final chapter.
Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator under Paterno, has been charged with sexually abusing eight boys across a 15-year period, and Paterno has been widely criticized for failing to involve the police when he learned of an allegation of one assault of a young boy in 2002.
Additionally, two top university officials — Gary Schultz, the senior vice president for finance and business, and Tim Curley, the athletic director — were charged with perjury and failure to report to authorities what they knew of the allegations, as required by state law.
Since Sandusky’s arrest Saturday, Penn State — notably its president, Graham Spanier, and Paterno — have come under withering criticism for a failure to act adequately after learning, at different points over the years, that Sandusky might have been abusing children. Newspapers have called for their resignations; prosecutors have suggested their inaction led to more children being harmed by Sandusky; and students and faculty at the university have expressed a mix of disgust and confusion, and a hope that much of what prosecutors have charged is not true.
On Monday law enforcement officials said that Paterno had met his legal obligation in alerting his superiors at the university when he learned of the 2002 allegation against Sandusky. But they suggested he might well have failed a moral test for what to do when confronted with such a disturbing allegation involving a child not even in his teens. No one at the university alerted the police or pursued the matter to determine the well-being of the child involved. The identity of that child remains unknown, according to the Attorney General.
Paterno has not been charged in the matter, but his failure to report to authorities what he knew about the 2002 incident, in which Sandusky allegedly sexually assaulted a young boy at Penn State’s football complex, has become a flashpoint, stirring anger among the board members and an outpouring of public criticism about his handling of the matter.
In recent days Paterno has lost the support of many board members, and their conversations illustrate a decisive shift in the power structure at the university. In 2004, for instance, Paterno brushed off a request by the university president that he step down.

Did you read about the DA who met with Sandusky and the Penn State Cops 7 years ago?
He supposedly investigated the case and determined there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed. So no charges would be filed.
Shortly thereafter, he disappeared. At first, his girlfriend thought he just wanted to get away and be alone. After several days passed, they sent out a search party. They found his laptop in a lake with the hard drive missing. They never recovered his body.
He was declared legally dead just last week.
Weird. Could be connected to the whole ugly affair – or not.

After seeing a naked Sandusky having anal sex with a 10 year old boy, and being deeply disturbed, the graduate assistant surely went to Joe Paterno and told him that Sandusky was just horsing around in the shower with a little boy. Just normal behavior for a 55 year old man.

Paterno made a conscious choice. He chose to protect his program’s reputation and his power and allow many boys to become victims of this predator. Now he is desperately trying to hang on. IT’S OVER!!!!

Paterno TESTIFIED in front of a grand jury that McQueary told him the incident was sexual in nature. So let me get this straight. Paterno KNEW that a 55 year old man had sexual contact with a 10 year old in a shower in his football facility and did not think he should report that to the police. You are actually defending this piece of shit? I guess that reveals much about your moral compass.
He testified to the grand jury that he believed, based on what graduate assistant Mike McQueary told him, the incident was “sexual” in nature. Despite knowing that, and presumably knowing that having sexual contact with a 10-year-old is a crime, he didn’t follow up when Sandusky was not investigated by outside authorities.

PATERNO FOCUSED ON THE IMPORTANT ISSUES:
In the afternoon, Paterno stepped out of a silver sedan being driven by his wife, Sue, and headed to the team practice. At one corner of the facility, managers hastily put plywood boards over an exposed fence to block photographers’ view of the field.
At the spontaneous rally at his house, Paterno held his fists over his head three times and said, “We are …”

High priests and little boys. Haven’t we seen this movie before? The script is appallingly familiar, laden with the grotesque phrases of grand jury findings about men in positions of trust committing unspeakable acts upon children.
This time, the alleged perpetrator was a preacher of our national religion — football — a former defensive coordinator whose degenerate acts allegedly took place in the inner sanctum that the legendary Coach Joe Paterno constructed so carefully for the Nittany Lions at Penn State. Jerry Sandusky was once a beloved disciple of the disciplined Pastor Paterno, making his fall from grace so much more incomprehensible. The storied Happy Valley has become a shameful den of iniquity.
Among Catholics like me who have suffered through too many years of scandalous news about priests preying on children, this latest example illustrates the truth that such depravity is not indigenous to religious life, any more than it is to college football. But that is small comfort in the face of such sickening evil. Far more wrenching is the shock that comes each time we realize anew that child abusers are not shady figures in trench coats lurking behind trees, but rather, trusted men whom the vulnerable innocents came to call “father” or “coach.”
What makes the Sandusky case even more worrisome for me as a university president is the specter of the next time — there will surely be a next time absent clear and unequivocal actions now. My job requires me to confront the urgent questions: Who is the devil we already know? How do we find him before the next heinous crime occurs in some dank locker room or sacristy redolent with the morning incense?
The collateral damage at Penn State — the indictments against former Athletic Director Timothy Curly and Vice President Gary Schultz — fires a warning shot through every president’s office and board room: Don’t think it can’t happen here! Doing nothing is a catastrophe. As Pennsylvania State Attorney General Linda Kelly said of the alleged failure of Curly and Schultz to report the original abuse claims to state authorities, “Their inaction likely allowed a child predator to continue to victimize children for many, many years.”
Inaction, denial, cover-up. To its sorrow, Penn State now realizes the hard lessons that the Catholic Church is still absorbing. The failure to act immediately to expose and arrest predators is a moral failure that leads only to further destruction of both the victims and the institutions that collude through their silence.
Universities are no longer the aristocratic clubs of yesteryear, the safe harbors where old boys’ networks and cherished secret rituals masked shockingly bad behavior, often involving alcohol, hazing, sex and drugs. A vast network of federal, state and local regulation now reaches deeply into institutional life, demanding a public viewing of academic entrails once relegated to musty files in the Dean’s Office or Registrar: retention and completion rates, disciplinary proceedings, crime stats, financial aid analyses and Title IX data.
A new raft of regulations issued last year demands immediate and vigilant attention to problems of sexual harassment and bullying on campus. Even the faculty cannot escape the long arm of risk management policies and training sessions; mandatory harassment seminars for personnel are a routine part of the landscape of university life today.
Perhaps Joe Paterno, going on nearly half a century as head coach, missed that memo. Perhaps the athletic director and senior management thought it didn’t apply to the football icons. Perhaps Penn State is too big for university leaders to know what’s going on in the showers. Perhaps they simply didn’t think that anything was wrong with Coach Sandusky’s behavior. What were they thinking? We’ll surely find out more in the trials to come.
Meanwhile, the rest of us in positions of institutional responsibility will be on the hunt for the devils we know. They are with us; we only have to discover them. Unfortunately, that will mean even more rules, certainly more regulations, more suspicion and more investigations. People will be upset; faculty will claim it’s all too intrusive. The clubby college of byegone days is gone, lost in the storm of accusation and denial and legal consequences in no-longer Happy Valley that will sweep across the entire sector of higher education as a result of the Sandusky indictment.
If all of this pain means we can spare one more child the devastation of sexual abuse then it is worth it.

Why are you criticizing Joe? He nodded at the law, got on with the program, and is a Penn State winner and a state wide hero.
